Vol.34 No.6

Purpose: This study aims to identify predicting factors influencing Chinese students’ intentions to quit smoking. Methods: Secondary data for this study came from a study on the change in smoking cessation among Asian students. Data on their intention to quit smoking was collected from October 2020 to January 2021 through an online survey. The study participants included 190 Chinese international students aged 19 to 29 who were smokers. Descriptive statistics, chi-squared test, independent-test, and decision-making trees were used for analysis. Results: 73.2% (139 students) of Chinese international students in Korea intended to quit smoking; 97.8% of the groups intending to quit smoking had previously attempted to quit. The decision tree ultimately had seven sections. The attempt to quit smoking was the most significant predictor of smoking cessation intention. Stop smoking attempts, intent to participate in a nonsmoking programs, smoking parents, stop-smoking self attempts, and smoking after studying abroad were factors predicting intention to quit smoking. Conclusion: The factors influencing Chinese students’ intention to quit smoking differed depending on their previous smoking cessation experience. Intention to participate in a smoking cessation program, parent smoking, and recent attempts to quit smoking were factors predicting intention to quit in those with previous smoking cessation experience. A program tailored to their needs should be developed to improve the smoking cessation intention of Chinese international students depending on their history of smoking cessation.

        Nurturing Christian School Educators

2022 Journal of Christian education information tech Vol.- No.42

This research asks and answers for the questions of "why, what, and how" of nurturing Christian alternative school teachers, and suggests three future tasks regarding those as follows. (1) The purpose of nurturing Christian alternative school teachers is to raise and produce teachers who are called by God, filled with the Spirit, held in Christian maturity, and intellectually well-prepared. (2) Christian alternative school teacher nurturing program needs to deal with the calling as a Christian (alternative school) teacher, mature spirituality and character, general knowledge about education and teaching methods, ability to integrate the Christian worldview into each subject, and comprehensive introduction to Christian alternative schools in Korea. (3) Christian alternative school teacher nurturing program takes a model of "certificate program from ACSI and ACSI Korea" and a model of "certificate program through existing Christian higher education," while expecting future establishment of teacher's college or university exclusively for nurturing Christian alternative school educators. (4) For better nurturing Christian alternative school teachers, there are to be more interests and supports from Korean churches and seminaries, practical infra systems, and consistent and diverse teacher education programs.

Purpose of Existence: Defensive and Proactive Purposes of English Ministry in the Korean Church

2017 Journal of Christian education information tech Vol.0 No.31

In this globalized society, the Korean Church as a whole has a calling for educating its next generation to be global Kingdom workers who go and make disciples of "all nations." English ministry has been one of the effective ways for the Korean Church to bear such a calling. This article explores the purpose of existence and the meaning of English ministry in the Korean Church. It deals with counterarguments to criticisms against English ministry as well as its benefits to argue for its meaningfulness. In the later part, as one of the proactive purposes, the study pays special attention to the contribution of English ministry to the development of English schemata from the biblical perspective, which serves as the foundation of our next generation’s global working for expanding God's Kingdom.

Educational Vocation of the Korean American Church in the Public Sphere of the U.S.

2018 Journal of Christian education information tech Vol.0 No.34

The church has a responsibility to play both a prophetic and priestly role in educating the public for a righteous and humane society. The church also needs to address the ways to play this role. Trying to find out one of such ways, this research explored two contributions to American society from the experiences and practices of the Korean American Church: (1) The Korean American Church can bring a potential clue to transform racial discrimination and to actualize racial reconciliation from its own reconciling practices as an ethnic minority group in U.S. society, which can bring a more multicultural public educational ecology for a righteous society; (2) The Korean American Church can also carry a possible promise to overcome dehumanization from individualism and to recover the meaning of life through sharing the Korean traditional heritage of we-consciousness and practices of it, which can enrich the layers of moral character formation of the public for a humane society. This research, with these contributions, would be beneficial for churches, including the American Church as well as the Korean American Church, to grapple with recapturing its role in the education of the U.S. public.

Vol.36 No.9

This study investigated the effects of a nutrition education program which used children's books, on students' food preferences and eating behavior. The program used seven children's books on the subject of food and nutrition, and included diverse learning activities based on Multiple Intelligences. The subjects were divided into two groups: control and experimental. The control group took only the regular practical arts lessons, while the experimental group took the additional lessons of this program. The results were as followed. First, the food preferences of the experimental group increased for various foods, expecially fish, beans, vegetables, and seaweed, for which their preferences had been low, while their preferences for processed foodstuffs decreased. Second, the eating behavior of the experimental group improved more than that of the control group. Thus, this program had positive effects on the children's food preferences and eating behavior. Programs such as these can help children to participate in learning activities with greater interest, and to learn various subjects in books. In addition, this study suggests that children's books can be valuable materials in nutrition education.

Youth Ministry with the 1.5 Generation Korean Americans: Conversion Experiences of Love and Acceptance

2014 Journal of Christian education information tech Vol.0 No.25

This article claims a revised practice of youth ministry with the 1.5 generation Korean Americans based on their conversion experiences of divine love and acceptance. The conversion experiences were gathered from the 20 intensive interviews upon which the researcher's doctoral research was based. The research results indicate that the 1.5 generation Korean Americans experienced their conversions predominantly through the assurance of divine love and acceptance rather than the awareness of sin. On the one hand, it is because their psychological needs for security, sense of belonging, and self-esteem were satisfied in their conversion by the experiences of divine love and acceptance. On the other hand, it is because their ethnic churches have overemphasized the concept of sin as pride. In this sense, practices of youth ministry with the 1.5 generation Korean Americans need to focus more on the theme of divine love and acceptance, while wisely applying reframed notions of sin.
