Recent settlement of the industrial society of mass production and mass consumption brings about an exhaustion of natural resources and global warming. Therefore, various researches are under way for the pursuit or economic growth and environmental protection at the same time. For example, directive on ELV went into effect on January 2006 in EU in order to increase the reuse and recovery rate for vehicles. In our country, the resources circulation law of automobile is established for the promotion of reuse of automotive components and effective on January 2008. In this paper, remanufacturing, which is one of the reuse of automotive parts, is introduced and performance evaluation system of the remanufactured starter motor is proposed for the quality certification.

The fuel injection system for common-rail direct injection(CRDI) diesel engines has been evolving by advances of the piezoelectric actuator performance. Compared with the solenoid-actuated injector, the piezo-actuated injector makes it possible to create more accurate and faster injections. Since the injection timing and the injection rate have a great influence on the combustion performance, the accurate and fast response of an injector can offer an opportunity to control the combustion process and pollutant formation. In this study, the mathematical model of a piezo-actuated injector is developed. The estimator of the injection timing and the injection rate of the piezo-actuated injector is designed based on this model. A sliding mode theory is applied to the estimator design in order to overcome model uncertainties. The injector model and the estimator are verified by the injection experiments in an injector test bench. The simulation and the experimental results show that the proposed sliding mode observer can effectively estimate the injection timing and the injection rate of a piezo-actuated injector.
