The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the sense of burden on the self-esteem of non-disabled adolescents who have brothers with developmental disabilities and to determine if family elasticity has a controlling effect among these variables. For this purpose, 116 adolescents aged 11 to 18 without a disability and with a sibling who has a disability were surveyed using self-reporting questionnaires. The SPSS 23.0 statistics suite was used to identify the correlations between the variables, and this was followed by a hierarchical regulation regression analysis to confirm whether family resilience moderated the relationship between the sense of burden felt by an adolescent sibling without a disability and his/her self-esteem. The results of this study showed, first, that the sense of burden felt by the sibling without a disability had a significant negative influence on self-esteem. This indicates that a higher level of the sense of burden caused by the existence of a sibling with a disability may reduce the level of self-esteem. Second, family sensitivity had a significant and positive moderating effect on the influence of the sense of burden felt by an adolescent sibling without a disability upon self-esteem. That is, in the pathway of the negative influence from the sense of burden on self-esteem, family resilience could function as a protective factor. Based on the findings of this study, the researcher provides practical strategies for enhancing family resilience and suggests the need for intervention on adolescent siblings without disabilities in the field of education and social welfare.
