논자는 이 작은 글에서 화이트헤드와 칸트의 목적론과 미학을 비교한 다음 그들이 어떤 근거에서 서로 대조되는 결과를 낳았는지 살피려 한다. 첫째로 살필 것은 칸트에 관한 것이다. 칸트가 비록 미학적 접근 방법이 갖는 철학적 의의에 대해서 잘 인식했지만, 그가 가진 주관주의적 성향과 그것이 기초한 자연과학적 지식의 한계로 인해 주로 목적론적 해석에 충실했음을 우선 드러내 보일 것이다. 두 번째로 살필 것은 화이트헤드에 관한 것이다. 화이트헤드는 주로 미학적 입장에 근거한 철학을 추구하면서도 동시에 목적론적으로 해석된 형이상학을 추구했는데 이로 인해 현대의 탈구조주의 철학과 포스트모던 운동에보다 잘 부응할 수 있는 철학적 담론을 생산할 수 있는 가능성을 보여주고있다. 나아가 화이트헤드는 자신의 이런 경향으로 인해 이미 신학적으로 매우 신선하고 파격적인 종교관을 제공한 바 있다. 이 글에서는 나는 화이트헤드가 어떻게 미학적 해석과 목적론적 해석을 조화시킬 수 있었는지, 그리하여 어떤 새로운 신학적 작업을 펼쳐왔는지 그 단초를 보여주겠다. 화이트헤드가 어떻게 그런 작업을 펼칠 수 있었는지 알아보기 위해 우리는 화이트헤드의 미학적 경향과 목적론적 해석이 칸트의 그것과 어떻게 대조되는지 알게 보는 것을 주요 과제로 택하게 될 것이다. 그리고 이렇게 화이트헤드를 칸트에 대조시키는 작업은 화이트헤드 철학의 특징을 보다 명확하게 드러나게 할 것이다. 이 과정에서 또한 자연스럽게 화이트헤드 철학의 현대적 의의, 특히 포스트모던 문화담론과의 부드러운 조우와 더불어 새로운 종교철학적 대안 제공할 수 있는 화이트헤드의 가능성이 부각될 것이다. The main purpose of this paper is to make the comparison and contrast between Alfred. N. Whitehead and Immanuel Kant with regard to the problems of teleology and aesthetics. I will, first of all, attempt to show that although Kant was well aware of the importance of aesthetical approach to what the metaphysics is all about, he ended up with teleological interpretation of the universe. This is because his approach is heavily affected by what I call “subjectivist principle,” in which human subjectivity is the key to understanding what the universe is all about. Secondly, I will endeavor to show how Whitehead dealt with the issues of aesthetics and teleology in pursuing “process metaphysics,” by which he tried to establish a new type of post-modern philosophy. His process metaphysics has constructed a cosmology based on a teleological understanding of the universe. However, such a teleology is totally different from that of traditional metaphysics, such as Aristotelian one. Especially, what is interesting is Whitehead``s philosophical methodology in which aesthetics and teleology are kept in balance in a proper way. As we continue to elucidate the main ideas of both Kant``s and Whitehead``s metaphysics, the similarities and differences between them regarding aesthetics and teleology will be clarified more and more. In addition, I will show how Whitehead``s ideas of aesthetics can be able to propose a new kind of philosophy of religion that can be more applicable to comtemporary human society.
