This report is a continuous study on the architectural aspects of Tokyedong, a traditional family-village originated by Lee Whang (1501∼1570) : a famous scholar in the Chosun Dynasty. This area will be immerged under water due to the construction of Andong dam. In this study, housing patterns were analyzed in view of the social grades, cultural backgrounds, climatic and geographical conditions, and a comparative study with other province. The next followings were revealed. Systemizing ability, morality and conservatism due to Confucianism took a great role in the formation o housing scheme. Court Type Houses, especiaiy the complete plan house containes abstracted functions of upper class residence, is excellent in architectural image, and is a minimized one in size but still maintaining the degree of upper class.
The study intends to provide a measure to enhance public spirit in the development of commercial district in city plan area Conventionally, commercial districts are expected to do servant role for the remainders, ie., residential district, industrial district, green district. In this reason commercial districts are given heavy infrastructure and are allowed high building volume ratio(about 3-5 times to that of residential district). Here we find some obligation exist in accordance to the benefit, and can call the obligation as a duty for public spirit. For the study we reviewed planning theories that advocate public spirit in city planning and design, and analyzed current research papers on public concepts. We found current studies confined the concept of public on public domain only, but neglected the fundamental role of urban plan to accomplish the public benefit, eg. proper location, proper building function. So we set up three elements to keep public spirit in the development of commercial district: 1) location in the urban structure, 2) building usage and volume ratio, 3) public access and cognition unto the public domain. We applied the elements to the development of Dogog-dong General Commercial Districts, Kangnam District, Seoul(developed 1990s and up to 2003).Dogog-dong revealed that the built environment was far behind to accomplish public spirit that a city plan is ought to achieve in general: 1) The district was in periphery, thus inappropriate to be a center(in concept of accessibility in Space Syntax theory), 2) major portion of the building areas were apartment houses(over 67%) that are not of commercial use thus not open to the public, 3) public access and cognition to public domain was poor. We suggest the three criteria as a tool to develop and to evaluate a commercial district where 'public spirit' is the main concern.
The study is a Post-Occupancy-Evaluation on newly constructed steel framed school buildings sponsored by POSCO, and presents alternative tactics for planning and programming for the kind of project. The schools in concern are Seowha Primary School(Incheon city) and Galma Primary School(Daejeon city) which were completed in February 1999 and since occupied. The POE-2000 study results had to be compared to the POE-1999 which dealt on Jigog Primary School(Pohang city) and Iwol Primary School(Jincheon township) to develop an improved project tactics. In this reason we had to use the same questionnaire forms envisaged by the former study, ie. POE-1999. To begin with the same study format, it might be appropriate to differentiate whether a 'satisfaction' comes from the 'steel framed construction' or from the 'newly built environment'. However it was difficult with the POE-1999. As the intention to compare the 4 school building were the firstly achieved objective of this study that we had to continue to apply the same format and the analysis procedure. Except this condition, everything the POE-1999 conducted were valuable to this POE-2000. The satisfaction survey form includes 36 questions for individual items and 2 questions for general items.
