        Transitions in Education Platforms: COVID-19

        Im, Hyun Sun. “Transitions in Education Platforms: COVID-19.” Studies in English Language & Literature 46.4 (2020): 91-108. While the shift to online education in spring 2020 was a response to the unique crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic, it may mark a turning point in how education is delivered. Towards preparing for a future in which computer-based educational platforms are the norm, this study compares the outcomes of traditional face-to-face and online university English courses. It has three main goals: (1) to compare student achievement in traditional face-to-face lecture and recorded online lecture classes; (2) to compare attendance rates in the two types of course; and (3) to explore correlations between achievement and attendance in the two types of course. The findings show only a small gap in attendance rates, but significantly better average final test scores in face-to-face lecture courses. It can be concluded that academic outcomes of students are affected by education platforms. However, higher average final scores correlate with lower attendance rates, and the online course, which had the highest attendance rate, also had the lowest average final score. (Korea University)

        한국-중국-일본 의사 양성과정 비교 연구

        Purpose: Our understanding of the characteristics that make a ‘good doctor’ is continually changing. The aim of this study is to identify the attributes deemed important for being a ‘good doctor’ and to examine to what extent doctors actually possess them. Methods: A list of characteristics of a good doctor was generated from literature review and from opinions from medical education experts, a focus group of medical students and a pilot survey of patients. An inventory comprising 33 statements was administered to 598 medical students, 145 faculty, 164 primary care physicians and 85 patients. Results: All participants regarded ‘accurate diagnosis and treatment’ as the most important attribute for being a ‘good doctor’ and ‘keeping up-to-date’ as the second important attribute. Empathy towards patients, continuing professional development(CPD), kind manners towards patients were also regarded as important. There was a discrepancy between perceived importance and competency in the areas of communication skills, health advocacy and social contribution according to the participating groups. Conclusion: Excellence in clinical ability was identified as the most important attribute of a ‘good doctor’. Compassion and CPD were also identified as important characteristics. More sophisticated studies are needed to further explore the attributes of a ‘good doctor’ for our society.

        문항반응이론과 고전검사이론을 이용한 진료수행시험의 문항 분석

        Purpose: The objectives of this study were: 1) to analyze Clinical Performance Examination(CPX) items using item response theory(IRT) and classical test theory(CTT) and 2) to discuss how to apply and interpret these results in order to improve the quality of CPX items. In addition, we intended to explore statistical procedures in order to merge examination data from several different medical schools. Methods: The subject of the study was the 2005 CPX examination data from 10 medical schools located in Seoul and the Kyunggi province. For merging data from ten different medical schools, Levene's test for homogeneity of variances was used. Homogeneous group selection was conducted based on ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis' test and Tukey's multiple comparisons appropriately. The generalized partial credit model was applied to analyze polytomous items and the 2-parameter logistic model was used to analyze dichotomous items. Results: Data from 8 medical schools were incorporated into the analysis. The result of the discrimination index by IRT was different from that of CTT in both polytomous and dichotomous items. Discrimination index from IRT tended to be lower than that of CTT. Difficulty index of dichotomous items of two models was correlated well with each other. However, for polytomous items, IRT model provided more information than CCT. Conclusion: We discovered that the CPX items were mostly easy in terms of difficulty index, and the result from IRT and CCT model did not correlated well in the discrimination index. IRT may provide more detailed information for polytomous items, but the checklist and criteria of scoring system should be cautiously reviewed.

        Multiculturalism in English Language Teaching Materials: Effects on EFL Learners’ Motivation

        The purpose of this study was to learn about Korean students’ interest in multicultural topics in order to better understand the impact of multicultural contents on students’ motivation to learn English. Based on both a survey and interviews, the study’s results suggest that EFL learners may be more motivated in learning English when they encounter multiculturalism in their learning materials. The students showed curiosity and open-mindedness about other cultures. These results can be taken as evidence of the impact of globalization on students’ attitudes. The study involved 23 participants ranging from elementary to middle school students, with proficiency levels from low to intermediate. The data consist of the participants’ responses to fourteen survey questions and two interview questions. According to the 2009 revised curriculum, students should receive English and multicultural education simultaneously to understand multiculturalism and to prepare for multicultural competent practice in this increasingly diverse society. Considering the importance of developing intercultural awareness and sensitivity in the preadolescent period to increase students’ ability to successfully communicate, this paper examined the following hypotheses: (1) students are interested in multiculturalism and (2) multicultural education can therefore motivate students to learn English.

        Orbscan II system을 이용한 한국인 정시안 각막의 최적구면 분석

        This study was to analysis the values for anterior and posterior Best-Fit Sphere(BFS) in a Korean emmetropic population using the Orbscan II system. Cycloplegic refraction and anterior and posterior BFS were performed 40 eyes of 20 patients and we compared the results by sex and between the two eyes. Respectively, the 1, 3, 5mm zone average of anterior BFS showed each 5.63±3.49μm, 4.48±2.81μm and 2.14±1.82μm. The 1, 3, 5mm zone average of posterior BFS showed each 22.54±10.25μm, 15.88±7.55μm and 4.43±4.94μm in 40 emmetropic eyes. Anterior and posterior BFS were not statistically significant difference in male and female using Mann-Witney U test. 본 연구는 Orbscan II system을 이용하여 한국인 정시안을 대상으로 전면과 후면의 최적구면 (Best-Fit-Sphere)을 분석하고자 하였다. 20명 40안을 대상으로 조절마비하 굴절검사를 시행하였고 각막 전면과 후면의 최적구면을 남, 녀 두 그룹으로 나누어 비교하였고 우안과 좌안으로 나누어 비교하였다. 20명(40안) 전체 평균 anterior BFS는 1mm 영역에서 5.63±3.49μm, 3mm 영역에서 4.48±2.81μm, 5mm 영역에서는 2.14±1.82μm이었고, posterior BFS 값은 1mm 영역에서 22.54±10.25μm, 3mm 영역에서 15.88±7.55μm, 5mm 영역에서는 4.43±4.94μm이었다. 남자와 여자와의 차이는 Mann-Witney U test로 조사한 결과 anterior, posterior 모두 통계학적으로 유의한 차이가 없었다.

        Perceptions of World English: Different Attitudes from Inner and Expanding Circles

        This paper reports on a survey study that asked native English speakers (NESs) and non-native English speakers (NNESs) about concepts and issues related to communication with speakers of World Englishes (WE). The purpose of the paper is to examine NESs’ and NNESs’ concepts of the English language and attitudes towards varieties of English, with the goal of raising awareness of the need for better education about WE. The population of NNESs now outnumbers that of NESs speakers. More, the English users in Asia alone are more than the total populations of the USA, the UK combined. This gap will keep increasing, which will lead to ever-greater variety and new forms of English with unique traits. Drawing on the notion of WE, NESs need to recognize the diversity that already exists, and develop the awareness and communicative skills needed for interacting with speakers of Englishes that are different from their own varieties. This paper argues that school curricula should include education about WE in order to better meet the needs of our rapidly changing societies and educators also need to be sensitive and appreciative of the existence of WE acting as guides to bring students to full awareness of WE.
