Factors Influencing Student Attendance at Intercollegiate Athletic Events in Korea
2015 International journal of human movement science Vol.9 No.1
The purpose of this study is to expose the factors that may influence students’ motivation or choice to attend their institution’s intercollegiate athletic events in Korea. The survey was distributed and collected on campus from a large suburban university in Korea during the fall semester to the game attending students. A total of 164 completed questionnaires was returned and used as data for this study. Principal component analysis with varimax rotation was performed on the 22 items of factors that motivated respondents to attend intercollegiate athletic events and this analysis yielded a six factor solution. These six factors were named Competitive Factor, Facility Factor, Entertainment Factor, Social Factor, Identification Factor, and Promotional Factor. According to the survey, in terms of individual factor, ‘the amount of speed displayed’ was ranked as the most important factor which influenced students to attend events followed by ‘location convenience’, ‘cleanliness of stadium’, and ‘condition of stadium’. After all, the question still remains as to what factors influence students’ motivation to attend events and how this market should be developed. Nevertheless, the evidence shown through the results and the discussions permit several suggestions such as conducting separate studies within the institution in order to promote its athletics, expanding marketing strategies, and more. The nature of this study does not allow the readers to observe students’ purchase or post-purchase feelings. Instead, it explores the possible factors which may influence the purchase cycle regarding individual choice of athletic events. Recommendations and suggestions based on the findings were presented later in the study.

Over several decades, a significant number of books and articles have addressed the growing concern regarding commercialization of intercollegiate athletics and the resulting effect on colleges and universities (Sperber, 1990; Duderstadt, 2003). Most of the research has indicated that college sport should be reformed and cite aspects such as the facilities “arms race”, millionaire coaches, increasing professionalization of athletes, and mounting media pressures. Contradictory to those concerns, studies have shown that there are a multitude of benefits directly related to the athletic program that can be realized by universities (Goff, 2000; Roy and Graeff, 2008; Stinson and Howard, 2004). This paper will focus on the positive impact on colleges and universities derived from college athletic programs. For the purposes of this paper, the positive impact to the university is divided into three areas: (1) enrollment, that includes increased enrollment or admissions applications of universities due to the athletic success and increased student quality based on SAT scores; (2) exposure, which includes media coverage such as number of articles about the institution that provide positive perception and (3) contribution, which includes increased giving to the university due to intercollegiate athletic success. Current evidence indicates that athletic success and participation in a college sport league provides several benefits to the university. Most contents rely on existing studies, as well as public press accounts. It is suggested based on the results that the negative aspects often discussed in the previous studies can easily overshadow the many positive contributions that intercollegiate athletics programs provide for the institution.

Objectives The purpose of this study is to analyze the the linguistic characteristics and discourse structures of the domains of physical education and dance. This study aims to explore how these two fields are conceptually distinguished yet potentially interconnected. Methods By using Trend 21 corpus, which contains 20 years of articles from four major Korean newspapers, the research examines trends in public interest and patterns of co-occurring keywords related to physical education and dance. Results The analysis reveals that while both fields share some common keywords such as culture, art, fine arts, and music, their top-ranking co-occurring words differ significantly. Physical education is closely associated with terms like competition, life, facility, minister, education, school, athlete, and National Assembly, reflecting its institutionalization and strong ties to public policy and infrastructure. In contrast, dance is primarily linked to keywords such as performance, modern, theater, traditional, work, genre, creation, literature, festival, and court, emphasizing its focus on artistic creation and cultural value. Conclusions As implications, this study re-examines the diverse values and meanings of physical activity through linguistic discourse analysis and suggests that integrating physical education and dance could expand educational and social paradigms.
Vol.38 No.1
This study examines the interplay between urban policy and administration using keyword and co-occurrence word analysis from the ‘Trend 21’ corpus, which comprises 20 years of newspaper texts (2000-2019) from major Korean dailies. Both domains share common co-occurrence words such as “Seoul city”, “citizens”, “experts” and “urban planning”. However, urban administration is characterized by practical and service-oriented terms like “welfare”, “culture”, “transportation” and “medical care”, while urban policy exhibits more strategic and future-oriented features with words like “environment”, “development”, “research” and “participation”. The analysis reveals that over 20 years, urban governance has transitioned from an infrastructure-centered to a people-centered paradigm, with increasing importance placed on evidence-based decision-making and data utilization, while metropolitan approaches transcending administrative boundaries have become increasingly significant. Closer integration of policy and administration, strengthening citizen-centered design, and expanding data-driven decision-making are emerging as key challenges for future urban governance. In conclusion, this study suggests that understanding the circular relationship between urban policy formation and administrative implementation is essential for addressing complex urban issues and creating sustainable, resilient urban environments.

This study explores the potential applications of blockchain technology in the sports industry and suggests future directions based on in-depth interviews with blockchain company CEOs. The analysis identified 14 meaning units and integrated them into three main components: 'NFT business,' 'operational effectiveness,' and 'fan-driven sports business.' Participants viewed NFTs as a core element, predicting the expansion of blockchain-based digital asset markets in sports. Blockchain's security features, such as decentralization and transparency, are expected to enhance ticketing, prevent illegal sales, and enable smart contracts for athlete management. Additionally, blockchain may transform media distribution, audience engagement, and copyright protection, potentially shifting sports fans from passive consumers to active stakeholders.
