This article analyzes the impact of COVID-19 on Korean communities in Mexico and Brazil. In Mexico, the population of permanent residents did not decrease significantly, but in Brazil, close to 20,000 Koreans migrated to other countries. It seems that Koreans in Brazil who are mainly engaged in the clothing industry have relocated to other countries after giving up their business due to the long-term lockdown and the recession in the clothing industry. Also, inequality among Koreans has deepened. Accordingly, the Korean Association and other Korean organizations actively donated to help Koreans. The participation of young generation who were passive in the activities of the Korean Association increased, and the solidarity and cooperation formed in the process of overcoming the crisis became an opportunity for the Korean community to take another leap forward. In particular, they actively cooperated with the Korean embassy in the delivery of quarantine supplies by the government, donations to local communities, and diaspora public diplomacy on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of immigration. This is an example of how diaspora, our diplomatic asset, can become a main actor of public diplomacy.

Chitosan/gelatin and chitosan/gelatin/nanohydroxyapatite hydrogels were rapidly and stably prepared without any crosslinking materials by using an engineered tyrosinase (mTyr-CNK) with high catalytic activity for tyrosine/ DOPA-tethered polymeric biomaterials throughout a broad pH range. A dual-barrel syringe with one part containing chitosan/mTyr-CNK solution and the other containing gelatin solution with/without nanohydroxyapatite was successfully used to form homogeneous hydrogels at room temperature followed by 37 oC to simulate an in situ injection approach. The obtained hydrogels exhibited an average pore size greater than 150 m and high swelling ratios with similar mechanical properties to other chemically crosslinked chitosan/gelatin hydrogels. The in vitro degradation properties and cellular viability suggested that the hydrogels could be used as biodegradable and biocompatible scaffolds for biomedical applications, such as space filling biomaterials and delivery vehicles for bioactive molecules and cells. These results demonstrated that mTyr-CNK-mediated hydrogels have remarkable promise as an injectable scaffold biomaterial.

This paper aims to explore the relationship between the figurative usage of transportation-related lexical items and conceptualization by examining the figurative meanings of these items and analyzing the conceptual metaphors that activate as cognitive mechanisms to understand these figurative meanings. To achieve this objective, this study first investigates lexical items related with transportation through examples in actual use from news media texts. Secondly, it scrutinizes their literal meanings and delves into their respective figurative meanings in the context. Finally, this study presents conceptual metaphors which the figurative meanings of the transportation-related lexical items are mainly derived from: [THE STATE IS A TRAFFIC LIGHT], [THE PROGRESS IS RUNNING MODE], [THE ENVIRONMENT IS A ROAD], [THE PACE IS RUNNING SPEED]. .

The Kim Jong-un government proclaimed its vision for constructing “the society of Socialist Civilization” for its people (In-min). After proclaiming, the government started constructing “modern” and “scientific” buildings, streets, and public facilities not only in Pyongyang but also in several local cities. This study looks at these changes and analyzes how the discourses on constructing the society of Socialist Civilization and its urban development project have connected each other and the influence on the North Korean people (In-min). This study uses Henri Lefebvre’s urban theory, especially his argument on three dimensions of space production: Representation of Space, Space of Representation, and Practice of Space. This study analyzes North Korea’s urban spaces considering space arrangement and division by space designers (or political elites), images projected in social discoursed, and experiences of urban people in their real lives, following Lefebvre’s argument on three dimensions of space production. This study finds that the Kim Jong-un government has justified its construction of cities, arguing the necessity of enhancing the quality of People’s Socialist Civilized lives, and has refrained from emphasizing the leader’s greatness as the previous governments. The government has advertised new houses and cultural and physical training facilities, which were organized for the people. However, this study finds that these new “Socialist Civilized” spaces have not been welcomed by the North Korean people in their everyday lives.
