임성래 연세대학교 대학원 1984 원우론집 Vol.12 No.1
This paper observed the relations between the society and the novels of Yi-dynasty, especially heroic novels, with special emphasis on 'Jang-baeg Jeon'. Though the newels at that time lacked the reality, they turned out to reflect the social recognition of the age in relation to the social thoughts. The rind of the Yi-dynasty saw the dissection of the traditional order of status and talc rise of the new concept about the class. The influences exercised by the new thoughts now gaining power made appear in the works the desire for a new dynasty. The following are the two points which the author of 'Jang-beag Jeon' intended to adress. 1. That sovereign power may be transferred with the change of the chances against the divine right of kings, which was traditionally approved. 2. That status be disposed according ot the abilities. The divine right of kings raised inspite of the above mentioned, can be estimated to be a means of going in harmony with talc conservative powers. But we must not overlook the fact that the author suggest the importance of self-fulfillment desire at bottom. 'Jang-baeg Jeon' indirectly reflected the social recognition that existing political power cannot rule effectively and to be replaced by a new dynasty. The defeat of the Emperor Yuan in talc present novel implies the distruction of the existing dynasty and the construction of a new dynasty. With all these, 'Jang-baeg Jeon' can be said to describe the society as it was.
