스포츠 속 공정에 관한 비판적 고찰: McKinnon의 주장을 중심으로

이 연구는 스포츠 속 경쟁의 출발선을 결정하는 운(luck)의 문제를 공정성과 관련하여 고찰하는데 목적을 두고, 스포츠선수의 능력은 자신의 선택이나 노력의 결과가 아닌 ‘타고난 운’의 결과라고 본 McKinnon의 주장을 비판적으로 검토하였다. McKinnon은 누가 그 종목에 유리한 유전자를 가지고 태어났는가는 전적으로 운의 문제이고, 일부 운이 좋은 선수들만이 보상과 칭송을 독식하는 것은 부당하고 정의롭지 않기에 제도적 조정이 필요하다고 주장한다. 본고는 이러한 McKinnon의 ‘운 평등’ 주장에 대한 의의와 그 한계를 논구하였다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 1)스포츠 속 공정성의 의미를 정의(正義) 측면에서 고찰하고, 2)공정성 논란이 제기되는 사례와 그 이유들을 살펴본 후, 3)스포츠가 지닌 구조적 불공평을 조정하기 위해 McKinnon이 제시한 방안을 비판적으로 분석하였다. McKinnon의 스포츠 속 ‘운 평등’ 주장에 대한 본고의 핵심적인 비판은 3가지로 나눌 수 있다. 첫 번째는 스포츠경쟁 본연의 목적에 대한 이해가 결여되어 있다는 것이고, 두 번째는 공정(fairness)과 평등(equality)의 개념은 구분되어야 한다는 것이며, 세 번째는 유전적으로 타고난 재능이 모든 선수에게 동등하게 주어지지 않더라도 그것이 주어진 선수에게는 선험적이며 자연적 권리이기에 본질적으로 침해될 수 없다는 것이다. 스포츠 속 공정과 정의에 관하여 운평등주의 관점에서 접근하는 학계의 연구는 그다지 많지 않다. 그런 맥락에서 본 연구가 스포츠 속 공정의 의미와 기준을 재조명하는 계기로 작용하길 기대한다. This study aims to examine the problem of luck, which determines the starting line of competition in sport, in relation to fairness, and critically reviews McKinnon’s argument, which finds that the ability of athletes is not a result of their own choices or efforts, but of ‘natural lottery’. This paper clarifies the significance and limitation of McKinnon’s ‘equal luck’ thesis; he claims that it is entirely a matter of luck as to who was born with a gene that favors the sport, and that it is unfair and unjust for only some lucky players to take all the rewards and praise not earned through their efforts. To this end, this paper 1) examines the meaning of fairness in sport in terms of justice, 2) investigates some cases and reasons for fairness controversy, and 3) critically analyzes McKinnon’s plan to lessen inequalities which rise from the structural problem of luck determining the starting point of a competition. The main criticism of this paper on McKinnon’s claim of ‘equal luck’ in sport can be divided into three categories. The first is that there is a lack of understanding of the intrinsic purpose of sport competition; the second is that the concepts of fairness and equality must be distinguished; and the third is that although genetically innate talents are not available to all athletes, such talents are a priori and natural rights for those who were given them and cannot be violated. There are not many studies that approach fairness and justice in sport from the perspective of luck egalitarianism. In that context, this study is expected to serve as an opportunity to reexamine the meaning and standards of fairness in sport.

수영선수의 윤리의식 실태분석을 통한 실업팀 활성화방안 연구

이 연구는 지난 10년간 언론에 보고된 국내 수영실업팀의 비윤리적인 사례를 통해 수영계에서 부정행위가 발생한 유형과 이유를 설명한다. 또한 수영선수들의 윤리의식에 대한 분석을 통해, 국내 수영실업팀의 구조적 문제를 밝히고 해결책을 제시하는 것을 목표로 한다. 이를 위한 구체적인 연구방법은 첫째, 스포츠에서 일어나는 부정행위의 특성에 관한 문헌을 분석한다. 다음으로, 2011년 1월 1일부터 2020년 12월 31일까지 최근 10년간 미디어에 노출된 국내 수영실업팀 또는 실업팀 선수로부터 발생한 비윤리적인 사건을 검색하였는데, 분석된 사건들은 몰래카메라, 횡령, 뇌물수수, 도핑, 폭력·성폭력 등으로 분류된다. 마지막으로, 15년 이상 선수 경력을 가진 수영 선수 10명(실업팀에서 최소 5년 이상)을 대상으로 인터뷰를 진행하였다. 수집한 자료를 분석을 위해 전사, 분석메모, 개방코딩, 심층코딩, 주제발견의 순서로 진행하였으며, 이러한 과정을 거치어 나타난 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 수영선수들은 도덕적 감수성이 부족하고 집단주의와 결과에 의해 지배된다. 둘째로, 한국의 수영 실업팀들이 보여주는 문제들은 승리지상주의, 스포츠윤리 교육 부재, 불공정한 계약 절차, 학업 무시, 조직과 예산 제도의 모호함으로 나타난다. 마지막으로, 표준 계약절차와 규정, 제도 확보, 스포츠윤리 교육, 실업 연맹 구축 등 이러한 문제에 대한 해결책을 제공한다. 이러한 결과는 한국 수영의 공정성과 온전성을 위해 제도 및 정책 연구를 촉진할 것이다. 나아가 만연한 상업주의와 승리주의뿐만 아니라 스포츠의 본질적인 가치에 대한 피해를 막는데 도움이 될 것이며, 정의롭고 건전한 스포츠 문화를 조성할 것이다. This paper examines types of and reasons for cheating in swimming by looking at unethical cases of business swimming teams in Korea reported for the last ten years. It also aims to identify structural problems and provide solutions through analysis of swimmers’ sense of ethics. To achieve the goals, literature on characteristics of cheating occurring in sports is first analyzed. Next, media reports about cheating in business swimming dated from January 1 2011, to December 31 2020, are searched. The cases are classified into the candid camera, embezzlement, bribery, doping, and sexual harassment. Last, we conduct interviews with 10 swimmers who have a career as an athlete for over 15 years. The results of this study are as follows: First, swimmers lack moral sensitivity and are ruled by collectivism and outcome. Second, problems shown by business swimming teams in Korea include win-at-all-costs attitude; lack of education of sport ethics; unfair contract process; disregard for schoolwork; vagueness in organization and budget system. Last, solutions to these problems, such as standard contract procedures and regulations, education of sport ethics, and establishing federations for business teams are provided. These results would facilitate institutional and policy studies for the sake of fairness and wholesomeness of swimming in Korea. Furthermore, these results would help stop the pervasive commercialism and win-at-all-costs attitude, as well as the damage to the essential values of sport, thus creating a just and sound sporting culture.

스포츠선수의 윤리의식에 관한 연구: 엘리트 수영선수를 중심으로

이 연구는 스포츠계 비윤리적 사건, 사고가 지속적으로 발생함에 따라 스포츠선수의 윤리의식을 심층적으로 탐색함으로써 스포츠윤리의식 확립을 위한 방향을 제시하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 먼저 스포츠윤리와 관련된 선행논문, 연구보고서, 서적, 인터넷 자료에 관한 문헌고찰을 실시함으로써 스포츠계에서 발생하는 비윤리적 행위의 유형과 그 원인을 파악하고 스포츠선수의 윤리의식 분석을 위한 이론적 틀을 도출하였다. 다음으로 현재 대한체육회에 등록된 수영선수 10명을 유목적 표집법을 통해 연구대상으로 선정하여 심층면담과 참여관찰을 활용한 질적 연구를 수행함으로써 스포츠선수의 윤리의식 구조를 탐색하고, 스포츠계 윤리의식 고취를 위한 방안을 모색하였다. 본 연구는 스포츠선수의 비윤리적 행위 유형으로 승부조작, 부정청탁, (성)폭력, 도핑, 개인적 일탈행위를 도출하였으며, 그 해결방안으로는 스포츠선수의 자아존중감 및 자아효능감 증진, 스포츠윤리교육 의무화, 선후배간 멘토링제도, 스포츠맨십·페어플레이상 제정 및 운영 활성화를 제시하였다. 본 연구가 스포츠계 공정성 확보와 윤리의식 고취를 위한 제도적 방안 모색의 기초자료로 활용될 수 있기를 기대한다. The author of the paper realized the need for research on the ethical consciousness of elite swimmers through various ethical problems he experienced during his career as an actual swimmer. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the types and causes of unethical behavior of elite swimmers as ethical problems emerge within elite swimming organizations, and to present the correct direction of sports ethics. As a research method, a qualitative research method was adopted to derive results based on actual cases of elite swimmers. Specific data collection was conducted focusing on recording media such as papers and newspapers related to sports ethics and interviews of 10 athletes currently working on business teams among elite swimmers, and as a result, the following conclusions were obtained. First, match fixing, illegal solicitation, (sexual) violence, and deviant behavior appeared as types of unethical behavior of elite swimmers. Second, the causes and solutions of unethical behavior of elite swimmers were first presented as self-esteem and self-efficacy, mandatory sports ethics education, mentoring between seniors and juniors, and sportsmanship and fair play awards.

스포츠선수의 윤리적 의사결정과 환경적 특성

〔목적〕 이 연구는 Haidt의 사회적 직관주의 이론(social-intuitionist theory)을 토대로 스포츠선수와 일반인의 윤리적 의사결정에 있어 차이점을 분석함으로써 스포츠선수의 윤리적 판단 성향을 이해하고 판단에 영향을 미치는 요인을 환경적 특성 측면에서 고찰하였다. 이를 통해 스포츠선수의 윤리의식 제고를 위한 교육의 방향과 제도적 방안마련에 대한 시사점을 제공하는 데 연구의 목적이 있다. 〔방법〕 이러한 연구목적을 위해 대한체육회에 10년 이상 운동선수로 등록된 20대 엘리트선수 200명과 서울에 소재하고 있는 5개 대학교에서 200명의 20대 대학생을 비교 대상으로 선정하였다. 문항별 반응경향은 백분율을 통해 조사되었으며, 엘리트선수 8명의 심층면담을 통한 질적 데이터가 분석되었다. 〔결과〕 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 스포츠선수는 일반적인 윤리적 상황에서는 대체적으로 원칙을 강조하는 의무론적 윤리관을 드러냈으나 스포츠상황에서는 결과에 비중을 두고 판단하는 결과론적 윤리관을 매우 강하게 보이는 이중적 의식구조를 나타냈다. 둘째, 스포츠선수는 일반인에 비해 윤리를 당위규범으로 인식하는 유교적 윤리관을 강하게 견지하고 있으며, 이로 인해 윤리적 의사결정에 있어 합리주의보다는 온정주의가 비교적 강하게 작용하는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 스포츠선수는 개인의 생각이나 이익보다는 타인의 생각과 집단의 이익을 윤리적 의사결정에 있어 중요한 기준으로 여기고 있으며, 집단의 조화나 관계를 강조하는 집단중심 성향을 보였다. 넷째, 일반인은 훌륭한 스포츠선수의 잣대를 뛰어난 실력과 그에 걸맞은 좋은 인성을 갖춘 선수로 인식하며 스포츠선수의 도덕성을 중시여기는 반면, 정작 스포츠선수는 자신의 성공에 있어 도덕성의 영향과 그 중요성을 비교적 낮게 인식하고 있었다. 끝으로 스포츠선수의 가치관 형성에 크게 영향을 미치는 인물은 선수의 코치나 감독인 것으로 나타났다. 〔결론〕 스포츠계의 윤리의식 제고를 위해서는 스포츠 구성원의 윤리의식에 대한 심층적인 이해가 우선되어야 한다. 본 연구가 스포츠선수의 윤리의식을 사회문화적 맥락에서 접근하는 연구의 활성화에 촉매제 역할을 할 수 있기를 기대한다. [Purpose] Based on Haidt's social-intuitionist theory, this study analyzes the differences in ethical decision-making between sport athletes and the general public in order to understand the ethical judgment tendencies of athletes and examine the determining factors influencing their judgment from the perspective of their environment. In so doing, this study hopes to motivate education for enhancing ethical consciousness as well as institutional policy. [Methods] To this end, 200 elite athletes in their twenties registered for more than 10 years at the Korean Sports Association and 200 college students in their twenties from five universities in Seoul were selected for comparison. Response trends for each item were analyzed by percentage, and differences between groups were confirmed by the χ2 test method. [Results] The results are as follows. First, in general ethical situations, athletes usually showed a compulsory ethical view that emphasized principles, whereas in a sports situation, they showed a double consciousness and revealed a very strong consequential ethical view which put much emphasis on outcome. Second, athletes strongly maintained a Confucian ethical view that recognized ethics as a norm compared to the general public and, as a result, it was found that paternalism was relatively stronger than rationalism in their ethical decision making. Third, athletes regarded other people's thoughts and group interests as important criteria for ethical decision-making rather than individual thoughts and interests, and showed a group-centered mindset which emphasized group harmony and relationship. Fourth, while the general public viewed excellent athletes as those with excellent skills and good personality, and valued their morality, athletes thought relatively little of the influence and importance of morality in their success. Finally, it was found that coaches and managers were fundamental to the formation of the athlete’s moral view. [Conclusion] An in-depth understanding of sports participants' ethical awareness should come first in order to enhance ethical consciousness in sport. I hope this study will work as a catalyst for research which approaches athletes' ethical consciousness from a socio-cultural context.

e스포츠선수의 젠더 인식 탐색

〔목적〕 이 연구의 목적은 e스포츠선수들의 젠더 인식을 조사하는데 있다. 〔방법〕 참여자는 현재 e스포츠 프로선수로 활동하고 있는 남성 프로게이머 8명을 목적표집과 눈덩이 표집을 활용하였다. 대면 및 비대면 인터뷰로 자료를 수집하였으며 내용분석과 분류분석으로 분석하였다. 〔결과〕 e스포츠선수들은 여성 게이머에 대한 간접적 경험을 설명해 주었으며 연구결과는 첫째, 여성 게이머에게 보편적으로 형성된 부정적인 약자로서의 낙인 이미지를 갖고 있으며 이것이 디지털 게임에서 여성 게이머에 대한 성역할 고정관념을 지속적으로 재현하고 있는 기제다. 둘째, 남성들은 게임 세계에서 여성 게이머에게 욕설과 언어폭력, 성추행을 일삼고 있으며 이는 강자의 입장에서 여성 게이머를 성적 유희대상으로 보고 있다. 셋째, 남성 e스포츠선수들은 연령에 따라 젠더 관련 인식이 보수적이거나 긍정적인 특징을 갖고 있다. 현재까지는 남성들의 주류 세계인 e스포츠이지만 젠더와 성인지 교육을 통해 여성에 대한 태도 전환을 기대하고 있다. 〔결론〕 e스포츠계의 젠더 인식 변화를 위해서는 e스포츠선수의 젠더인식에 대한 심층적인 이해가 필요하다. e스포츠는 양성평등의 잠재력이 큰 스포츠이지만, 남성 지배라는 전통적 역학이 현재까지 이어지고 있는 현실에 놓여 있다. 따라서 ‘왜 그런 것인가’를 살펴보는 것이 후속연구로 수행되어야 한다. 본 논문은 e스포츠 젠더 연구 활성화에 학문적 관심을 불러일으키는 데 도움이 될 것으로 기대한다. [Purpose] The purpose of this study is to investigate gender perception of eSports gamers. [Methods] 8 male gamers in the professional team were selected purposeful and snowball sampling. Data were collected through face-to-face and online interviews, and analyzed by content analysis and classification analysis. [Results] Esport gamers explained their indirect experiences with female gamers. The results are as follows. First, it was confirmed that the number of female gamers was small and they had a negative stigma image, and this consistently reproduced the gender role stereotype of female gamers in digital games. Second, in the game world, men are swearing, verbal abuse, and sexual harassment against female gamers, which suggests that female gamers are viewed as targets of sexual play from the perspective of the strongest. Third, eSports male gamers are characterized by being conservative or open to gender perceptions by age. We discussed what to need in eSports which is male dominated area should give to opportunity for equality education. [Conclusions] In-depth understanding of gender perception in e-sports players should be prioritized in order to change gender perception. Therefore, it would be an important research topic bring to discuss. This paper is expected to be a beneficial material for eSports gender studies and stimulate to discuss gender imbalance.

유소년 엘리트 야구선수와 가족구성원의 스트레스 요인 탐색

본 연구의 목적은 미국 유소년 엘리트 야구선수의 스포츠 참여에 따른 가족구성원의 스트레스요인을 도출해냄으로써 인식을 파악하고자 하였다. 연구참여자는 미국 유소년 엘리트 야구선수 두 가족이 참여하였으며, 각각 선수, 학부모, 형제/자매 총 8명을 대상으로 심층면담을 진행하였다. 그 결과 유소년 엘리트 야구선수의 활동이 학부모에게는 재정적인 측면, 훈련과 시합에서의 동반되어야 하는 어려움, 매 대회출전에서 경험하는 자녀의 경기결과, 불균형한 가족역동성 등으로 스트레스를 받는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 선수 본인은 훈련하는 팀의 환경적 분위기, 졸업 후 진로에 대한 고민이 나타났고, 형제/자매에게서는 많은 희생에 따른 스트레스와 가족 내에서 오는 차별에 대한 스트레스를 경험하였다. 이에 대한 개선방안으로는 유소년 스포츠선수가 운동선수 생활을 지속함에 있어 부모의 사회·경제적 여건이 미치는 영향력이 경감될 수 있도록 재능을 발견하고 지원할 수 있는 사회적 시스템이 마련되어야 할 것이다. 또한 유소년 선수에게 엘리트 스포츠를 지도함에 있어, 교육내용 뿐만 아니라 참여자의 동기를 부여하고 새롭게 도전할 수 있는 기회를 제공하는 장을 마련해야 할 것이다. 궁극적으로 선수, 지도자, 학부모, 소속 에이전트 등이 함께 참여하는 교육프로그램 개발과 재정보조, 기술협력 등에 대한 ‘통합적 지원 방안’ 설계와 협력체계가 구축되어야 한다. The purpose of this study was to examine the stressors of organized US youth elite baseball activities, as perceived by both the athletes themselves, as well as their parents and siblings. A total of 8 individual interviewees (N = 8) from two US youth elite baseball families were participated in this study. The analyses of interviews revealed that the parents stressors included money, trveling, competition, and family dynamics. The athletes stressors related to coaches, teammates, future career, and family. The sibiling stressors included personal life and family. Overall, the result of this study illustrated that parents and family members make significant sacrifices for the player to be able to participate in baseball and have substantial stressors related to organized youth baseball activities.

엘리트 농구선수의 승부조작에 대한 근거 이론적 연구

본 연구는 엘리트 농구의 승부조작이 발생하는 주요 원인과, 실제 현장에서 승부조작 과정이 이루어지는 형태를 밝히는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 질적연구 방법(qualitative methodology) 중 하나인 근거 이론(grounded theory)을 활용하여 엘리트 농구의 승부조작 유형을 도출하였다. 근거이론 연구방법의 단계에 따라 개방 분석을 시행한 결과 엘리트 농구선수들이 경험한 승부조작 과정에 영향을 주거나 형상화해줄 수 있는 18개의 개념이 발견되었고, 그 개념을 다시 유사한 개념으로 묶은 결과 8개의 하위범주를 발견할 수 있었으며, 6개의 범주를 도출하였다. 축 분석 결과 엘리트 농구에서 승부조작 상황은 ‘엘리트 선수의 불균형적 성장’이란 구조적 현상을 통해 나타나는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이후 엘리트 농구의 불균형적 성장에 기인하여 나타났고, ‘제반 환경의 비 체계화’라고 하는 맥락적 조건과 ‘제도적 지원’이라는 중재적 조건으로 인하여 승부조작 현상을 ‘문제의식 수준’이라는 작용/상호작용 전략에 영향을 미치게 된다. 이는 결과적으로 ‘묵인’과 같이 승부조작 형태로 나타나게 됨으로 본 연구의 마지막 연구문제인 ‘엘리트 농구의 승부조작 유형은 어떻게 나타나는가’를 알아볼 수 있었다. 마지막 선택 분석 과정에서 가설적 정형화와 가설적 관계진술문을 구성하여 유형분석을 실시한 결과 엘리트 농구선수의 승부조작 유형은 관여형, 묵인형으로 나타났으며, 최종적으로 엘리트 농구선수의 승부조작을 종합적으로 설명할 수 있는 상황모형을 도출할 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통해 도출된 결과는 엘리트 농구선수의 승부조작 현상을 완벽하게 설명하기에는 어려움이 있지만, 엘리트 농구선수들의 승부조작 경험을 기반으로 그들이 처해있는 환경과 구조를 파악할 수 있었다. The purpose of this study is to clarify the main causes of match-fixing in elite basketball and the form of match-fixing in the actual field. To this end, grounded theory, one of the qualitative research methods, was used to derive the type of match-fixing of elite basketball. Open analysis was conducted according to the stage of the grounded theory research method, and 18 concepts that could influence or shape the match-fixing process experienced by elite basketball players were found, and 8 subcategories were found as a result of grouping the concepts into similar concepts, and 6 categories were derived. As a result of the axial analysis, it was found that the match-fixing situation in elite basketball appears through a structural phenomenon called "the disproportionate growth of elite players." Since then, it has been attributed to the disproportionate growth of elite basketball, and the contextual condition of "dissystematization of the overall environment" and the interventional condition of "institutional support" affect the match-fixing phenomenon as a "level of problem consciousness." As a result, this appeared in the form of match-fixing, such as 'ignorance', so it was possible to find out the last research question of the research, 'how the type of match-fixing in elite basketball appears'. In the last selection analysis process, a hypothetical formalization and hypothetical relationship statement were constructed and type analysis showed that elite basketball players' match-fixing types were involved and tolerated, and finally, a situational model could be derived to explain the match-fixing of elite basketball players. The results derived from this study were difficult to fully explain the match-fixing phenomenon of elite basketball players, but based on the experience of match-fixing by elite basketball players, they were able to grasp the environment and structure they are in.

e스포츠선수의 약물복용 문제에 관한 윤리적 고찰

[목적] 현재 e스포츠는 엄청난 인기를 구가하고 있고 e스포츠에 관한 학계의 관심과 연구도 활발해지고 있다. 하지만 현재 e스포츠에 대한 학계의 연구는 e스포츠가 정말 스포츠인지, 즉 스포츠로서 갖는 자질과 지위에 관한 논의에 집중되어 있고 e스포츠에서 발생하는 여러 윤리적 문제에 관한 학술적 조사나 연구는 거의 없는 실정이다. 이러한 학문적 공백을 메꾸기 위해 본 연구는 e스포츠가 직면한 인지 향상 약물(cognitive enhancement drugs) 복용문제의 윤리적 쟁점을 분석함으로써 e스포츠계의 약물복용 문제 해결을 위한 바람직한 방향성을 제시하고자 한다. [방법] 이러한 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위해, 먼저 e스포츠의 환경적 특징을 살펴봄으로써 e스포츠계 부정행위의 양상과 선수들이 약물복용 문제에 노출되는 배경을 파악하였다. 다음으로 e스포츠선수의 인지 향상 약물 복용문제에 관해 어떤 윤리적 쟁점이 존재하고, 왜 그것이 쟁점이 되는지를 여러 학자들의 입장을 통해 고찰하였다. 끝으로 e스포츠의 환경적 특성을 고려할 때 전통적 스포츠로부터 차용한 약물복용 금지 정책이 왜 e스포츠에 부적합한지를 지적하며, 약물복용 문제에 대처하기 위한 e스포츠계의 바람직한 접근방안을 제시하였다. [결과] e스포츠 공정위원회(ESIC)의 정책이나 세계반도핑기구(WADA)의 금지목록은 e스포츠선수의 수요에는 맞지 않을 것이며 새로운 문화로서 e스포츠 산업의 성장을 방해할 위험마저 있다. e스포츠의 환경적 특성을 고려한 e스포츠선수들에게 합리적으로 적용될 수 있는 약물복용 관련 지침을 마련하는 일이 중요하며 약물복용 문제에 대한 e스포츠선수들의 윤리의식과 판단능력을 증진시키기 위한 의무적인 예방교육이 실시되어야 한다. [결론] e스포츠가 주로 젊은 층을 대상으로 세계적으로 인기를 끌고 있고, 그로 인해 프로 e스포츠 선수의 위상과 지위도 높아지면서 청소년에게 미치는 파급력과 영향력을 감안할 때, e스포츠의 윤리적 문제, 특히 약물복용에 관한 문제는 시급하고 시의적인 논의이며 e스포츠의 확산과 건강한 발전에도 함의하는 바가 크다. [Purpose] Highly popular these days, eSport is inviting increasing scholarly attention and research. Scholarly work on eSport, however, remains focused on whether eSport is a “real” sport, that is, its sporting qualities and status, excluding ethical issues. This paper analyzes ethical issues about cognitive enhancement drugs often associated with eSport in order to suggest guidelines for resolving these issues. [Methods] First, environmental features of eSport are examined to find out types of cheating in eSport, as well as the ways eSport athletes are exposed to drugs. Next, ethical issues of cognitive enhancement drug use and why they are important are discussed, drawing upon multiple scholars. Last, this paper argues that the ban on drug use conventionally implemented in sport is not appropriate to eSport due to the characteristics of eSport. The paper concludes with possible future approaches to this issue. [Results] The ban lists administered by ESIC and WADA would not work for the need of eSport athletes and even run a risk of stunting the growth of eSport industries. It is thus important to think up an appropriate drug-related policy for eSport. Preemptive education for eSport athletes is also required to promote the ethical consciousness and judgment regarding drug use. [Conclusion] Insofar as eSport’s huge popularity leads to the increased status of eSport athletes, thereby exerting much influence on young people, ethical questions about eSport, drug use in particular, need to be urgently discussed for the sake of eSport’s wholesome development.
