A novel hybrid system composed of a biotrickling filter and an activated sludge reactor was investigatedunder the conditions of four different SRTs (sludge retention times). The performance of the hybridreactor was found to be directly comparable among the four different sludge ages. Discernible differencesin the removal performance were observed among four different SRTs of 2, 4, 6, and 8 days.bilized mixture culture, which allowed on pH control, addition of nutrients, and removal of paint VOCs(volatile organic compounds). The results also showed that the removal efficiency for a given pollutantdepends on the activity of microorganisms based on the SRT. As the SRT increased gradually from 2 to 8days, the average removal performance decreased. The highest removal rate was achieved at the SRT of 2-O2/liter-min was measured. Biologicalactivity in the recycle microbes decreased to a much lower level, 3.6mg-O2/liter-min at a SRT of 8days.of low concentrations and high flow rates. The apparent correlation of R2= 0.996 between the averageremoval efficiency and the average OUR at each SRTs suggests that VOCs degradation by young cellssignicantly affected the overall removal efciency for the tested SRTs.

Data for isthems were obtained by treating fixed quantities of the groundwater collected from the site contaminated by petrochemicals of the old Marathon Oil Refinery, Michigan, U. S. A. Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total xylenes all were present at such low concentrations that even small amounts of Filterasob 300 granular activated carbon (GAC) were successful in removing the contaminants. Among those pollutants, benzene is the most difficult component removed by adsorption process. The ultimate capacity for ben- zene component is calculated at o. 175 mg/g, which is equivalent to 0.0175%(wt/wt)loading. The GAC is also capable of achieving low ppm concentrations of TOC. The unltimate capa-city of the FS-300 GAC in terms of TOC is about 90 mg/g which is equivalent to 9%(wt/wt) loading. From the preliminary breakthrough test, the calculated MTZ value is about 1. 5 feet. Whereas, from the primary breakthrough test, the MTZ and carbon usage are 1. 8 feet and 0.003 1bs of carbon/gallon of groundwater, respectively, The carbon dosage is in the range of 0.0025 to 0.0030 1bs of carbon per gallon of the target groundwater. The most efficient carbon bed depth is therefore estimated in the range of 6 to 8 feet depending on operating conditions. As the result of performance analysis of three carbons which are FS- 300, FS-400, and Hydrodarco-3ooo, Fs-300 gives the best economical removability of benzene for the conditions of flow rate 20 to 25 ml/min and specific hydraulic loading 2.5 gallons per minute per squared feet.
