This article diagnosed today’s problematic situation in the era of the fourth industrial revolution and sought a new direction in Korean classical literature research. The entire discussion consisted of three parts: the present problematic situation, the role of humanities, and the direction of the study of classical literature. Problematic current situations include the crisis of climate disaster and ecological environment, information technology revolution, biotechnology revolution, and neurology revolution, looking at the possibility of a new era and its dark side. The role of humanities in living up to these times is to design a desirable future for mankind, win-win with others, and find a way to coexist. As a new direction for classical literature research, we first looked at the current status and prospects of data collection and text analysis using artificial intelligence technology in terms of methodology. Next, the direction of analytical understanding of classical works was considered in three aspects: nature, human beings and society.

In this paper, I attempt to reinterpret 『Gukmunhakchunsa』 that has been evaluated negatively on the basis of the modernist view. In this text, Gukmunhak is defined as national literature as well as the literature of a nation-state written in its own language. The national literature mentioned is not a trace of the past but a concept which has to be built in the future. This meaning is connected with the multiple interpretation of periodization in history, the respect for the differences that exist in the national literature, and the discovery of minority literature. In this regard, I think that 『Gukmunhakchunsa』 has a post-modern value.

This article examines how American intellectuals responded to the rise and spread of popular culture during the period from 1890 to 1929. When they recognized that it was a phenomenon related to the development of mass production and mass society, their positions appeared to be both critical and supportive. Whereas the intellectuals like William James saw it with critical views because they believed that it might check the autonomy of individuals, those like Gilbert Seldes saw it with positive attitudes because they saw a possibility that American society would be unified and democratized through the popularization of culture. This article argues that even though both groups of American intellectuals responded to the spread of popular culture differently, their basic stances were to a large extent not very different. For their ideas and actions were deeply and organically related in the context of American intellectual tradition which emphasized the unity and harmony of the whole and the parts.
