Purpose: To investigate the incidence, demographic features and clinical characteristics of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) in Korean patients. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 413 patients (485 eyes) diagnosed with choroidal neovascularization in exudative age-related macular degeneration between June 2001 and September 2005. All patients underwent complete ophthalmologic examination, fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography, and optical coherence tomography. Results: Among a total of 485 eyes of 413 patients, 80 eyes of 66 patients (16.5%) were diagnosed with PCV. Men were predominantly affected (80.3%), and most patients were elderly with a mean age of 68.3 years (range, 50~93 years) and unilaterally involved (78.8%). The polypoidal lesions in PCV tended to be located in the macula area (62.5%). With respect to vascular network, fine vascular networks were observed in 51 eyes (63.7%) and large lesions were present in 16 eyes (20.0%). Clusters of grape-like polypoidal lesions (60%) were more common than solitary aneurysmal dilations (35.0%). Branching choroidal vessels were present in 67 eyes (83.7%) and absent in 13 eyes (16.3%). Optical coherence tomographic images of polypoidal lesions in 53 eyes showed uneven surfaces with more sharply peaked shapes different from those seen in the serous pigment epithelial detachment in age-related macular degeneration and central serous chorioretinopathy. Conclusions: The incidence of PCV in Korean patients was relatively high among various ethnic groups. Although the demographic and clinical features of PCV in Korea differed from Caucasian patients, they were similar to Japanese and Chinese patients.

Objective: The present study analyzes the prognostic performance of prehospital oxygen saturation (SpO2) for 30-day mortality in patients with isolated traumatic brain injury (TBI). Methods: This retrospective observational study included patients with severe isolated TBI admitted through the prehospital emergency medical services system between January 2019 and December 2020. Multivariate analysis was performed using logistic regression of relevant covariates, including prehospital SpO2, for predicting 30-day mortality. Receiver operating characteristics analysis examined the prognostic performance of prehospital SpO2. The primary outcome was 30-day mortality. Results: A total of 189 patients were included in the study. The 30-day mortality rate was determined to be 16.9% (n=32). Prehospital SpO2 of survivors was higher than that of non-survivors—98% (95%-98%) vs. 89% (81%-97%). Results of multivariate analysis revealed that prehospital SpO2 (odds ratio, 0.868; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.789- 0.954) is independently associated with 30-day mortality. The area under the curve of prehospital SpO2 was 0.768 (95% CI, 0.701-0.826; P<0.001). Conclusion: Results of the present study indicate that prehospital SpO2 is associated with 30-day mortality in patients with severe isolated TBI. Therefore, determining the prehospital SpO2 will help to rapidly classify and transport patients with TBI to the appropriate hospital.

Freshwater algae living in shallow waters have evolved various photomovement to stay in the optimum light condition for survival. Previous action-spectra investigations showed that Spirogyra filaments have phototropic movement in blue light. To decipher the genetic control of phototropic movement, two phototropin homologues were isolated from Spirogyra varians, and named SvphotA and SvphotB. Both phototropins have similar molecular structure consisted of two light–oxygen–voltage domains (LOV1, LOV2) and a serine / threonine kinase domain. SvphotA and SvphotB had 48.7% sequence identity. Phylogenetic analysis showed SvphotA and SvphotB belong to different clades suggesting early divergence, possibly before the divergence of land plants from the Zygnematales. Quantitative PCR and northern blot analysis showed that SvphotA and SvphotB responded differently to red and blue light. SvphotA was consistently expressed in the dark and in blue light, while SvphotB was expressed only when the plants were exposed to light. When the filaments were exposed to red light, SvphotA was significantly downregulated whereas SvphotB was highly upregulated. These results suggest that the two phototropins may have different roles in the photoresponse in S. varians.

The objective of this study was to determine the response of QTL in each generation during selection to develop inbred lines. The simulation program was written in Fortran. Magnitude of QTL effects, base population size, number of QTL assigned to population, and the allelic frequency for the positive allele at each major QTL were highly associated with number of generations to fixation of QTLs during selection. Populations with larger QTL effects and larger base population size had more individuals with fixed QTL. However, a smaller number of QTL assigned to population had a higher fraction of individuals with fixed QTL at each generation compared with more populations with QTL. This simulation study will help to design biological experiments for detection of QTL-marker association using inbred population and to determine optimum number of lines with fixed QTL during inbred line development. To complement this study, additional simulation should be need with abundant replicates, more various population sizes, magnitude of QTL effects, and recombination between markers and QTLs.

차세대 인터넷 기술 중의 하나인 IP 멀티캐스트는 시장에 진입해보기도 전에 그 빛을 잃어가고 있다. 본 고에서는 IP 멀티캐스트 시장실패 요인을 기술적인 고찰을 통해 시장 논리를 적용하여 풀어놓았다. 또한 멀티캐스트 기술과 시장의 전망에 대하여 살펴본다. 향후 멀티캐스트 통신서비스는 고전적인 IP 멀티캐스트 기술보다는 새로운 멀티캐스트 대안기술을 토대로 틈새시장을 통해 발전할 것으로 전망된다.
