There have been many studies about white layers generated in various manufacturing processes such as hard turning, grinding, reaming. There are two different opinions on its wear characteristics. It is considered to be tribological adventage in some instance, but should decrease wear resistance because of forming micro crack and void. In this study, Ball-on-Disk type tester was used for sliding test with SUJ2 specimen due to understand the effect of white layer on friction and wear property. Surface profiler was used for investigating change of surface profiles, and transformation of micro structure was observed by FE-SEM on cross section of specimen after chemical etching.

Friction and wear characteristics of ceramic coatings on anodized aluminum alloy surfaces are studied. The friction coefficient of TiAlN coating is highest among three coatings. For the wear, the hardness of coatings are higher than that of anodized aluminum alloy, so that anodized aluminum alloy is worn out abrasively by coatings. The width of friction coefficient is affected by formation and destruction of transferred layer. For TiAlN and CrN coatings, the repetition of formation and destruction of transferred layer is so active and the width of friction coefficient is large.

The nuclear fuel cladding tubes which are a key component in nuclear power plant are damaged by the fretting wear caused by FIVs. Those are also interfered with severe environments such as high temperature, high pressure, radioactivity etc. Therefore the fretting wear tests were conducted using the nuclear cladding tube treated by the corrosion under radioactivity environment. As the load increased, the corrosive layer was fractured quickly. In case that corroded layers were existed, the maximum friction forces and wear depths were relatively lower.

The chassis system of the mobile components is weakened by the inflow of dust particles. The inflow of dust particle weakens the durability of automobile’s components and also weakens the driving ability by increasing wear and friction in the rubber-seal components among the chassis systems. In this study wear characteristics and mechanism analysis of rubber-seal for the inflow of dust particles were investigated using the sliding wear tester. The tester is a type of ball-on-disk ; ball is a steel, disk is a rubber-seal. and We used five kinds of the amount of SiO₂ particles 0g, 0.5g, 1g, 1.5g, 2g 2.5g in water, because SiO₂ particle is a main ingredient of dust.

In this study, we investigated the influence of contact pressure on the coefficient of friction between porcine knee joint cartilage and Co-Cr alloy in repeat pass sliding motion. Cartilage pin specimens (9㎜ diameter, 8㎜ long) were prepared from porcine (6 months old) knee joints cartilage by a drill-type punch. Friction tests were conducted by using a pin-on-disk type friction tester for an hour in PBS lubricated condition under the contact pressures of 0.5, 1 and 2 ㎫ with 50 ㎜ distance per a cycle at ambient condition. As a result, coefficients of friction increased as the test durattion increased for all contact pressue. The maximum coefficients of friction were 0.082, 0.06 and 0.098 for 0.5, 1, and 2 ㎫, respectively. It showed that coefficients of friction of porcine knee joint catilage against Co-Cr alloy depended on the level of contact pressure and related to squeeze film lubrication mechanism.

In this study friction and wear characteristics between piston skirts and cylinder bores were investigated using the reciprocating wear tester in SAE5W40 oil condition. The relative motion between a piston skirt and a cylinder liner in a real engine is considered to reciprocation wear tester. The cylinder blocks were used as reciprocation specimens, and the piston skirt samples with graphite and DLC coatings were used as fixed pin.

To interpret the perception that originates from tactile sensibility during people touch and recognize the object surfaces, this study focuses on the development of a friction model that can describe the interaction of a stylus pen sliding over the counter surfaces. In addition, the study includes several other experimental factors such as the pressure, temperature, and topology of surface, which can have an effect on the emotional user experience concerning various surfaces; this research aims to suggest a method to quantitatively evaluate the relation between these experimental parameters and emotional user experience. Accordingly, the objective of research comprises the friction characteristic technology for measurement of fine tribological behavior and a standard to quantify the emotional feedback. Existing panels or input devices that provide interaction feedback about user actions simply operate with a single frequency vibration or sound response. On the contrary, this research investigates various interaction characteristics including friction force, frequency, and surface topology synthetically. Using the developed model, which can explain the relation between the friction parameters and emotional user experience, developers can design their product in order to provide the user with expected emotional sensibility. Consequently, it can contribute to reduce the development cost about sensitivity model.
