영국인과 유럽인들은 다양한 면에서 이순신 제독의 업적과 능력을 평가하고 있다. 특히 영국과 유럽에서는 노량해전과 트라팔가해전을 통해 이순신 제독의 위대한 업적을 영국의 위대한 넬슨 제독과 비교하고 있다. 많은 유럽의 전문가들은 이순신 제독이 일본군과의 해전에서 연전연승한 요인으로 ① 거북선을 설계·건조한 공학적 (기술적)인 마인드, ② 장거리포를 이용하여 일본군을 원거리에서 공세적으로 공격한 전술, ③ 해전을 치른 해역의 조류 특성과 지리 적인 이점을 이용한 전략적인 식견, ④ 남다른 애국심과 용기 등으로 분석하고 있다. 아울러 영국의 존경받는 장군인 몽고메리 장군이 그의 명저인『전쟁의 역사』에서 이순신 제독을 전략가이면서 전술가인 동시에 기술혁신에 대한 탁월한 능력을 가진 제독이며, 아시아 역사에 영향을 미친 인물로 평가하였다. 이순신 제독이 한반도 해역에서 치러진 해전에서 일본군을 패배 시키고 승리한 교훈은 유럽 국가들로부터 위협을 받아 온 섬나라 영국에게 특별한 교훈을 주었다. 그러나 이순신 제독이 아시아 역사에 미친 영향이 매우 크지만 임진왜란 당시 동아시아가 유럽과 비슷한 수준의 해군력을 가지고 있었음에도 불구하고 더 발전하지 못한 것은 해양의 중요성에 대한 국가지도자의 인식 부족과 무관심 때문이다. 오늘날 중국, 일본 등 주변국들의 군비증강으로 동북아시아의 해양안보 불안 요인이 가중되고 있는 현실에서 이순신 제독이 해전 사에 미친 영향은 한국해군에게 시사하는 바가 매우 크다. The British and Europeans are evaluating the accomplishments and abilities of Admiral Yi Sun Sin in a variety of ways. Especially in England and Europe, the great achievements of Admiral Yi Sun Sin are compared with Admiral Nelson of Great Britain through the Battle of Noryang and the Battle of Trafalgar. Many European experts pointed out that Admiral Yi Sun Sin could win the battle with the Japanese army with the following reasons: ① an engineering mind that designed and constructed a turtle ship, ② a tactic that attacked the Japanese army from a remote location using a long-range gun, ③ strategic insights using the characteristics of sea-tides and their geographical advantages in the battle sea area, and ④ unusual patriotism and courage. In addition, Gen. Montgomery, a respected general in Britain, in his book The History of War, evaluated Admiral Yi Sun Sin as a strategist, tactician, technological innovator and a great person who influenced Asian history. The lesson that Admiral Yi Sun Sin defeated and won the naval battle against Japan on the Korean Peninsula gave a special lesson to Britain, an island nation, that had been threatened by European countries. However, Admiral Yi Sun Sin had a great influence on Asian history, but the fact that East Asia had similar naval power in Europe at the time of the Japanese invasion of Korea did not develop much because of national leaders lack of awareness and indifference on the importance of the ocean. Today, the increase of naval power in neighboring countries such as China and Japan is adding to the maritime security uncertainty of Northeast Asia, and thus, the Admiral Yi s influence on naval warfare has a great impact on the Republic of Korea s Navy.
