Twenty calves averaging 7Mo. of age were used to study the effect of zeranol implants(ZI) on growth, carcass traits and concentrations of hormone and serum metabolites in bulls and steers of Korean cattle. The animal were treated with none or three implants of zeranol at average ages of 7, 10 and 13Mo. There were significant(P$lt;0.05) differences between bulls and steers of control group in live weight, back fat thickness(BF), cold carcass weight and yield grade index. In steers, ZI increased serum IGF-1(Insulin-like growth factor-1) concentration, and resulted in greater live weight(10.5%) and BF(25.4%) compared to those of control. However, it did`nt affect marbling scores(P$gt;0.05). ZI in bullls tended to increase cortisol concentration, marbling scores and BF. The results indicate that zeranol implants had more advantage in steers than in bulls.

Twenty steers and 20 bulls averaging 7 Mo. of age were employed to investigate the effects of casrration on the carcass characteristics, serum metabolites and hormones of Korean cattle from 7 Mo. to 25 Mo. of age. Dressing percent(P$lt;0.05), cold carcass weight(P$lt;0.01) and longissimus dorsi area(P$lt;0.01) of bulls and steers were 57.6±0.44; 58.6±0.36%, 306.9±0.97; 344.9±0.51Kg and 74.3±0.97; 84.7±0.15㎠, respectively. Steers had more marbling score than bulls(4.4±0.11 vs 1.5±0.22; P$lt;0.01). Differences between bulls and steers in serum insulin-like growth factor-1(IGF-1) concentrations and testosterone, stimulate protein synthesis and growth, were large(P$lt;0.01) after 15 Mo. and 9 Mo. of age, respectively. Serum cortisol concentrations had increased rapidly at 19 Mo. of age both in bulls and steers. Steers had higher cortisol concentrations, stimulate lipid metabolism and deposit of intermuscular lipid, than bulls. These results suggested that castration would be extended after 15 Mo. of age to increase beef quality and to conpensate the loss of weight gain due to castration.

Thirty proven Hanwoo sires, ranging from 5 to 9 years old, were used to investigate the effects of dietary nutrition level, age and body weight on semen characteristics which were analyzed using CASA(Computer-aided sperm analyzer) and to determine the proper nutritive level, age and body weight for production of high quality semen. The groups fed a diet meeting the NRC requirements for maintenance(NRC) had more semen volume than the groups fed at additional 10% level(NRC + 10%). However, tendencies were the opposite in sperm concentration and motion characteristics. Sperm concentrations of 9 years old sires had lower than those of others and the sires below 800㎏ body weight were better than the sires over 800㎏ body weight in sperm motion characteristics[curvilinear velocity(VCL), straight-line velocity(VSL), beat-cross frequency(BCF)] and viability. Although the interaction of age and the nutrition level had not be significant on semen characteristics, VCL, VSL and ALH(amplitude of lateral head displacement) of the groups fed at NRC + 10% were better than those of the grops fed at NRC in every age. The sperm concentration of 9 years old sires with below 800kg of body weight were the lowest. The sperm motion characteristics of 7-8 and 9 years old were best in below 700㎏ and over 700㎏ of body weight, respectively. But individual difference of sperm motion characteristics were large in 9 years old sires. In every body weight except 700∼800㎏, the semen characteristics of groups fed at NRC + 10% were better than the those of groups fed at NRC. But the semen characteristics of the group of 700∼800㎏ body weight fed at NRC was the best among the those of others. Therefore, the proper age and body weight of Hanwoo sire for production of high quality semen would be 5∼8 years old with below 800㎏ of body weight. Feeding plane of sire below and over 700㎏ body weight would be fed at NRC + 10% level and NRC, respectively.

Two groups of 20 bulls and 20 steers averaging 9Mo. of age(10 supplemented with yeast culture, YCS and 10 control, C in each group) were used to determine the effect of yeast culture supplementation on growth and carcass traits in Korean cattle. Yeast culture add to diet 20g/d/head during 11∼13Mo. and 15 -17Mo. and 25g/d/head during 20∼22Mo. of age in YCS. Weights at 26Mo. of age were 604.1±16.5, 592.7±16.5 and 538.0±13.5, 515.6±13.5Kg in YCS and C in bulls and steers, respectively. YCS had 1.9% and 4.3% advantage in weight over in bulls and steers. YCS did not affect meat quality grade but affect yield grade in bulls. In contrast, YCS in steers did not affect yield grade but were 5.7㎠ larger in longissimus dorsi area(YCS : 70.5㎠, C : 64.8 ㎠) and 273,138 Won higher in price per head than the counterparts. It appears that the effect of yeast culture supplementation was great in steers but not in bulls.

To establish the system for frozen-semen production, oestrus synchronization, and artificial insemination (AI) in Elk deer, the characteristics of frozen-semen and conception rate by artificial insemination were observed. Semen were collected from 2 heads of elk (Cervus Elaphus canadensis) sire by an electroejaculator and diluted to 0.9- 1.1 X 10^9 sperms/straw with the extender containing glycerol, hydroxymethyl amino methane, citric acid, fructose, and 20% egg yolk. The diluted semen were chilled at 4℃ for 3-4 hours, prefrozen at -140㎏ for 30-40 minutes, and preserved at liquid nitrogen (-196℃). The motility, viability, and abnormality of frozen-thawed semen were 62.4-70.5%, 73.7-75.3% and 6.8-7.3%, respectively. Oestrus was synchronized in 48 heads of hind with progesterone- impregnated intravaginal devices (CIDRs). The CIDRs were removed on Day 14, and 10-250 IU pregnant mare`s serum gonadotrophin (PMSG) were given to each hind. Oestrus exhibition rate was 95.8% (46/48). Forty-six hinds, showing oestrus, were artificially inseminated with frozen-thawed semen 60-62 hours after PMSG injection. Pregnancy was detected by ultrasonography at 40 days after Al. The overall conception rate was 78.3% (36/46). These results indicate that the system for frozen-semen production and AI established in this study may be adapted to deer industry.

PCR-RFLP analysis was carried out to investigate the genotype of Melanocortin receptor 1 (MC1R) gene in Korean Brindle Cattle and Korean Cattle with dark muzzle, which are coat color and muzzle pigmentation variants of Korean Cattle, respectively. Allelic variants of MC1R in cattle were analyzed by digestion with BsrFⅠ, AciⅠ. Among six genotypes, E^D/E^D, E^D/E^+, E^D/e, E^+/E^+, E^+/e and e/e, detected in cattle, only two genotypes, E^+/E^+ and E^+/e, were observed in Korean Brindle Cattle, probably reflecting the necessary of E^+ allele for the expression of black brindle coat color. As in Korean Cattle with light muzzle, the E^+/e and e/e genotypes were detected in Korean Cattle with dark muzzle. The E^+ and e alleles frequencies in two populations of Korean Cattle with dark muzzle and with light muzzle were 0.37, 0.63 and 0.11, 0.89, respectively. Although the frequency of E^+ allele in Korean Cattle with dark muzzle was higher than in Korean Cattle with light muzzle, the E^+ allele was not completely associated with dark muzzle pigmentation. The results of this experiment indicate that the difference of MC1R genotype and frequency may be useful for fixation of coat color in Korean Cattle as well as Korean Brindle Cattle.

The objects of this study were to estimate gene frequencies of the bovine growth hormone(bGH), and to investigate the relationship between the bGH polymorphism and semen characteristics in Hanwoo bull. One hundred nine heads of Hanwoo bulls were used to identify bGH genotypes by the PCR-RFLP, followed by digestion with Alu I restriction enzyme. The frequencies of leucine(Leu) and Valine(Val) alleles were 0.88 and 0.12, respectively. Observed number of LL, LV and VV genotypes were 83, 25 and 1, respectively. Semen characteristics(semen volume, sperm concentration) were analyzed by GH genotypes in 25,559 ejaculates of 109 heads. Although bGH genotypes showed no significant effects on semen characteristics, those of bulls with VV genotype were tended to be lower than those of other bulls with LL or LV genotypes. And, in 1998, total sperm number(60.47×10^8) of VV bulls were significantly lower(P<0.05) than those(86.21∼92.22×10^8) of other genotypes bulls. This results provide that the VV bull in bGH locus may be worse, under the LL and LV bulls on semen characteristics. However, the number of examined VV bulls was only one and further investigations are needed to confirm the results.

We are now doing research for the drawing check of local parts in mechanical drawings made by a CAD system. It needs the recognition of drawing drawing elements with respect to the local parts. Because, we usually abbreviate the dimensioning in the mutually related drawing elements. This paper is concerned with a computer aided supporting system to the dimension check and recognition of local parts in mechanical drawings. This system has been applied to some examples and we have confirmed the feasibility of this checking method.
