뮤직비디오 <This Is America>의 힙합 정체성

힙합(Hip-hop)은 전 세계 대중음악의 주류 장르로 확산하고 있다. 특히 미디어를 통해 오락적인 요소로 표면에 비치는 도식화된 힙합의 이미지와 이름으로 청소년들 사이에 랩을 유행시켰다. 10대를 중심으로 한 팬덤은 음악가의 음악에도 영향을 미치며, 주제의 특성을 변질시켰다. 힙합은 음악 이전에 흑인으로부터 발생한 미국의 하위문화 형태다. 이를 통해 문화의 정체성을 확립하였으며, 사회 비판과 저항의 특성을 지니고 있다. 본고에서는 2018년 발표, 대중적인 성공을 거둔 <This is America>의 뮤직비디오를 분석함으로 힙합의 정체성 확인을 하고자 한다. 뮤직비디오의 의미작용은 기호학자 롤랑 바르트의 신화론과 그레마스의 사각이론을 통해 분석하였다. 시간 간격으로 구성된 뮤직비디오의 서사 구조를 3가지 분류 기준으로 나누어 각각의 장면에 내재한 의미를 밝혀내는 것으로 힙합의 정체성이 현시대 힙합 음악에도 나타나는 것을 증명한다. 이를 통해 주류의 문화로만 인식되는 힙합의 방향적인 경계를 갖출 수 있으며, 하위문화라는 특성을 통해 이를 재현할 수 있음을 확인하고자 하는 논문이다. Hip-hop is gaining popularity as a mainstream genre of popular music around the world. In particular, rap has become popular among teenagers and the image and topic of hip-hop are reflected as elements of entertainment through media. The teen-centered fandom also influences the music of musicians and alters the characteristics of the theme. Hip-hop is a form of American subculture that originated in early black folk music. Through this, the identity of culture was established and the characteristics of social criticism and resistance were developed. In this article, I will confirm the identity of hip-hop by analyzing the music video <This is America>, which was released in 2018 and became a popular success. The semantic action of the music video was analyzed through theories of semiotics, Such as that of Roland Barthes, and Greimas’ square theory. By dividing the narrative structure of the music video composed of time intervals into three classification criteria, the meaning inherent in each scene can be revealed. Through this, it is possible to obtain have a directional boundary of hip-hop, which is recognized only as mainstream culture, and reconstruct it through the characteristics of subculture.

한국 힙합의 하위문화 연구 : 딕 햅디지의 하위문화론을 중심으로

최근 문화연구에서 시도되는 세계화에 따른 논의는 당연한 흐름이라 할 수 있다. 인터넷의 등장과 함께 가속화된 문화의 초국적 흐름은 현시대(現時代)에 살아가는 사람들의 생활에서 다방면으로 발견된다. 대중문화 역시 세계화의 흐름 속에서 해석이 가능하며, 이는 동질화의 경향이 나타날 수 있음을 뜻한다. 이에 본고는 대한민국의 대중문화 중 하위문화적인 성격을 가지고 있는 한국 힙합 음악의 가사들을 분석함과 동시에 미국으로부터 도입된 한국 힙합 음악의 특성을 살펴보고 하위문화 담론의 영역을 넓히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 대중문화의 성장과 더불어 세계화의 영향으로 토착화된 하위문화의 특성을 가진 한국의 힙합문화를 분석함으로 주류에 상응하는 언더그라운드 힙합의 특징을 이해한다. 이를 위해, 하위문화 이론가 ‘딕 햅디지’의 저서 <하위문화: 스타일의 의미>의 하위문화의 대표적인 세 가지 특징인 ‘의도적으로 규칙 위반’, ‘브리콜라쥬’, ‘저항’의 기반으로 한국 힙합 음악의 발전과정과 가사들을 비교 분석하였다. 그 결과, 한국 힙합 곡의 가사들에서 하위문화적인 특성을 보인다는 점을 발견함과 동시에 햅디지의 이론과 한국의 힙합 음악의 가사 및 문화 발전과정에서 세 가지의 큰 차이점을 보인다는 것을 발견하였다. 이에 차이점을 가지게 된 사회적, 역사적, 문화적인 배경을 살펴보고, 원인을 규명한다. 위의 과정들을 통해 하위문화의 담론 영역을 확장함과 동시에 주류문화의 지배적인 유행을 가질 수 있는 대중문화 속의 하위문화의 역할을 밝히고자 하는 논의이다. Recently, cultural studies attempted to discuss globalization, and it followed a natural flow. The transnational flow of culture accelerated with the emergence of the Internet, and this has entered people’s lives in several ways. Popular culture can also be interpreted against the backdrop of the flow of globalization which implies that homogenization tends to occur. Thus, this paper aims to analyze the lyrics of Korean hip-hop music that has a sub-cultural characteristic to examine the features of Korean hip-hop music introduced by the United States, and to expand the scope of sub-culture discourse. The characteristics of underground hip-hop corresponding to the mainstream is understood by analyzing the hip-hop culture of Korea, which has imbibed the indigenous subcultures’ aspects owing to the growth of popular culture and the influence of globalization. The Korean hip-hop is based on the “intentional violation of rules,” “bricolage,” and “resistance,” which are the three characteristics of the subculture according to the subculture theorist, Dick Hebdige’s “Subculture: The Meaning of Style.” This genre’s development and its music lyrics were compared and analyzed. Consequently, they found that Korean hip hop songs demonstrated sub-cultural characteristics, and they showed three deviations from Hebdige’s theory. Furthermore, this course examines the social, historical, and cultural backgrounds that led to these deviations, and identifies their causes. Finally, this study aims to expand the discourse of subculture and identify the role of subculture in popular culture that can have the dominant trend of mainstream culture.
