Choe, Jong-Joo and Lee, Nam-Geun. 2000. Case and Adjunct in the Siphta Construction: An Extended Argument Structure Analysis in HPSG. Linguistics 8-1, 133-152. The siphta construction in Korean shows some intriguing properties such as the case alternation in the complement NP of the lower verb and the optional - but not arbitrary - case marking on the adjunct. We will show that the `argument structure` alone is not enough to deal with the case marking on the adjunct simply because the adjunct cannot be contained in the argument structure. Therefore, in the framework of Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG for short), we will take advantage of the new feature DEPS (or dependendy structure) proposed by Bouma, Malouf and Sag (1999). The extended argument structure DEPS will enable us, with the help of Case Principle and the notion of structural/lexical case, to take care of the case alternation and case marking on the adjunct in the siphta construction. Lee, Namgeun. 1996. Agreement Phenomena in Korean Topic Sentence: An HPSG Approach. Linguistics 4, 193-213. This paper is an attempt to describe agreement phenomena in Korean topic sentences with respect to Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG) based on information and constraints. In chapter 2, topic and focus sentences in Korean discourses are distinguished and defined. In only Korean topic sentences does agreement between a third-person-singular morpheme and a second-person-singular morpheme occur and this agreement is described. In chapter 3, some concepts and mechanisms related to the agreements for HPSG established in Pollard and Sag (1994) are introduced. In chapter 4, based on the background of previous chapters, agreements in Korean topic sentences are analyzed, and it is revealed how the factors relating to syntax, semantics and pragmatics interact on Korean agreement structures in topic sentences. The final chapter contains conclusions. (Chosun University)

Of the two main types of English nominal apposition constructions, close and loose apposition, the close apposition construction (Close-AC) displays quite diverse syntactic and semantic/pragmatic properties. Depending on the property of the anchor and appositive in the construction, we can classify the Close-AC into several different subtypes. Instead of assuming that these subtypes form one homogeneous construction type, this paper suggests that each of these subtypes inherits appropriate combinatorial properties from the counterpart English phrasal constructions including head-modifier, head-complement, and head-functor constructions. This paper shows that the Close-AC has more diverse uses than the Loose-AC, while sharing certain properties with it, and that these regularities as well as idiosyncrasies can be expected once we look at this construction with the spirit of Construction Grammar in which language-specific generalization across constructions is captured via inheritance networks.

English conditional constructions can be realized as inverted ones, but the question remains what trigger the inversion and what kind of differences exist between the canonical and inverted conditional constructions. This paper supports the claim that the constructions are basically motivated by the information structure while inheriting general properties from the more general constructions, SAI (Subject-Aux-Inversion) ones.
A Unified Approach to the Postposition -ey/eykey in Korean
이남근 ( Nam Geun Lee ) 한국현대언어학회 2002 언어연구 Vol.18 No.2
The purpose of this paper is to provide a unified analysis of Korean case markers and postpositions based on considerations of their semantic as well as syntactic aspects. First, we examine syntactic characteristics of case makers and postpositions, respectively, and argue that dative `-ey/eykey` should not be classified as a postposition because they show different syntactic behavior in phenomena such as `Case dropping`, `Case stacking`, `plural suffix copying`, `floated noun quantifiers`, etc. Following Categorial Grammar and O`Grady`s(1991) theories, we provide a unifies analysis of dative `-ey/eykey` based on syntactic and semantic considerations. The English as-parenthetical construction (APC) displays a significant resemblance to the nonrestrictive relative clause (NRC), but at the same time has its own unique internal and external distributional properties. This paper investigates the uses of the construction through corpus data and shows that the interaction between the lexicon (in particular, the lexical properties of as) and constructional constraints are responsible for the APCs distinctive grammatical properties. Like English, Korean employs several types of cleft constructions. This paper reviews the grammatical properties of two main types of Korean cleft constructions: pseudo cleft and inverted cleft construction. In particular, it reviews syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic properties of these two types and then discusses the interaction among grammatical levels. The paper than sketches an HPSG (Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar) analysis that can capture the similarities and differences of the two types of Korean cleft constructions.

The Linguistic Association of Korea Journal 23(3), 69-83. DDL(Date Driven Learning), developed from corpus linguistics, plays a pioneering role in allowing languages learners to observe authentic corpus data and induce grammar rules. This paper discusses the application of DDL in learning the so-called Vacuous Object Extraposition. The construction, where no intervening expression exists between the expletive it and the extraposed clause is well-known for its grammatical complexity, challenging even high-level EFL learners. The paper discusses how to unveil its grammar patterns, and even induce possible grammatical rules throuth DDL. The study shows that DDL can help learners to study naturally occurring language for the complex phenomenon and encourage learners to develop skills needed to deal with the language around them, which eventually contributes to the development of their cognitive skills.
