테니슨의 「루크레티우스」 읽기: 테니슨의 루크레티우스 재현의 문제

This essay investigates Tennyson’s representation of Lucretius as a failure who was trapped in the gap between his belief and reality and this eventually led him to commit suicide. This representation of Tennyson’s was grounded on an unsubstantial notion spread by St. Jerome. Lucretius, a Roman Epicurean philosopher, expounded things of nature based on an atomic theory excluding any spiritual world or after life. The purpose of his philosophy, he argued, was to help people understand things as they are and be free from any superstition or ungrounded fear of gods, and thus enjoy their life in full in peace. Tennyson, in his poem, focuses on the volatility and destructiveness of Lucretius's atomic explanation of the universe, his inability to control his sexual desire, and his contradictory attitudes toward God. Especially Tennyson strategically emphasizes Lucretius’s suffering despair by being overwhelmed by obscene images haunting him in his nightmares. Then he reveals Lucretius’s own betrayal of his own notion of God as an irrelevant being standing aloof from human affairs by making him appeal to God for help for protecting him from being succumbed to sexual provocation. By means of this, Tennyson tries to underline the hollowness of Lucretius's materialistic view of the world and its related belief of the possibility of human’s utter autonomy of his own life and also clarify his disapproval of God as a Being irrelevant to human affairs. 이 논문은 테니슨의 시 「루크레티우스」를 그의 루크레티우스 재현의 문제를 중심으로 고찰한다. 테니슨은 그의 시 「루크레티우스」에서 5세기경 성 제롬에 의해 유포된 루크레티우스의 광기와 자살설을 토대로 그를 믿음과 실제 사이의 간극에서 절망하여 결국 자살로 생을 마감한 실패자로 그리고 있다. 테니슨은 그의 시를 전개함에 있어서 루크레티우스의 원자론의 유동성과 파괴적 측면을 부각시키고, 루크레티우스의 성적 욕망의 통제 불가능성을 강조함으로써 인간의 자기 통제 가능성을 일축하며, 절망에 빠진 루크레티우스가 신에 매달리는 모습을 취하게 함으로써 그의 자가당착성을 드러낸다. 테니슨은 그의 시에서 특히 음탕한 성적 영상의 쇄도 때문에 괴로워하며 절망에 빠져 있는 루크레티우스의 모습을 전략적으로 부각시키는데 그것은 인간이 모든 것을 이해함으로써 스스로의 삶을 다스리고 통제할 수 있다는 루크레티우스의 철학이 공허한 것에 지나지 않음을 보여주고자 한 것으로 보인다. 루크레티우스가 자연을 설명하는 차원에서 다른 것들에 비해 비중을 그리 크게 두었다고 볼 수 없는 성의 문제를 테니슨이 그토록 중심에 두고 부각시킨 이유는 인간의 이해와 이성으로 인간의 삶을 스스로 통제할 수 있다는 루크레티우스의 견해가 지나치게 이상적이며 더욱이 그의 이러한 견해가 신의 개입이나 영성에 대한 철저한 배제와 맞물려 있어 그것을 받아들일 수 없었기 때문으로 보인다. 이러한 테니슨의 루크레티우스 재현은 테니슨 자신의 믿음과 가치, 즉, 신의 창조물인 인간세상, 결점이 있는 존재로서의, 그러나 영생불멸의 잠재성을 지닌 존재로서의 인간, 그리고 인간사에 개입하고 응답하는 신에 대한 그의 관점의 산물로 볼 수 있다.

The Immediate Effects of Five-Toed Shoes on Foot Structure

The purpose of this study is to analyze the immediate effects of five toed shoes on foot structure. Subjects consisted of 26 college-aged women with pes planus. X-ray analysis of student feet were performed both barefooted and with five toed shoes. Dependent variables were hallux valgus angle, calcaneal inclination angle, 1st metatarsal declination angle, and intermetartarsal angle. Independent t-test was used for statistical analysis along with SAS. Overall, there were statistically significant changes of test subject's dependent variables when wearing five toed shoes. Specifically, the hallux valgus angle decreased, the calcaneal inclination angle and 1st metatarsal inclination angle increased, and intermetatasal angles both increased and decreased, shifting towards normal range. In every case the dependent variables shifted towards a more normal range while subjects wore five toed shoes. This study only examined the immediate corrective effects of five toed shoes on foot structure, but long-term studies are needed to understand the prolonged effects of five toed shoes on foot structure.

In the nowaday contemporary society that is specialized and diversified, the preenact situation is that folk religion is alienated and neglected while beaconing the basis of the popular Culture. This is recognized as the way of thinking that originates from the commonly accepted idea that it is unrelated to rapidly changing society and folklore. But it is thought that there is a consistent association between folk religion and the socio-cultural reality in and essential respect. That is, the folk religion is the form of the popular religion and people`s world-view of the populace in a traditional society. And it seems that it would be good to view the folk religion as the living culture latent in the contemporary society. An attempt was made to inquire into the folk religion by dividing it into shamanistic religion, family-god religion and community religion in a broad sense. But they are closely related to each other as the mutually organic relationship and show the aspect of their evolving and developing in accordance with the social situation of the times. The feature of the folk religion is that it does not only exist everywhere in culture and society irrespective of any regime while having no system or organization as religion but has an influence on the formation of a new culture. Our culture of today is confronted with the period of chaos in establishing its specific survival and buiding up the culture to awaken people to its value. This takes a form of the different culture in accordance with the characteristics of the times in each country, which can be thought to be attributable to pur excessively easy acculturation to the western culture while neglecting our folk way of thinking and culture. The tradition is the popular way of living in each era and its value and significance are developed into a meaning of new recreation nowadays. Accordingly, we will have to grope a new direction for the promotion of a future-oriented culture by recognizing and reilluminating the folk religion the foundation of the popular religion from the current social perspective in recognition of the point that the thing of value in our present life would become a tradition of that future Folkways are what has been read rather than what will have to read` in the future. In light of what will have to be read`, it is possible to diagnose the actuality of the nowaday culture and make the prescription appropriate to it.

Qualitative Analysis of Pressure Intensity and Center of Pressure Trajectory According to Shoe Type

The purpose of this study was to qualitatively analyze pressure intensity and the center of pressure(COP) trajectory according to shoe type. Subjects were ten first-year female university students. The EMED-AT 25/D(Novel, Germany) was used to measure pressure intensity and COP trajectory. The COP Excursion Index(CPEI) was used for within subject test design. Independent variables were bare feet and six types of shoes. Dependent variables were center of pressure trajectory and pressure intensity. Barefeet and five toed shoes had a similar pressure intensity and COP trajectory. COP trajectory for all other shoe types showed a medial wobble at the heel. Pressure intensity for all other shoe types was related to the structure of the shoes. In conclusion, different shoe types can not only affect gait, but they can also influence foot deformities, pain, and dysfunction.
