The study aims to examine how Ezra Pound applies imagistic methods to his translation of Chinese poetry by analyzing poems in Lustra and Cathay. Performing the task of translator, Pound appropriates Chinese poetic models to broaden and deepen the possibilities of his native language and to execute and strengthen the project of imagism which is one of the central axes of Western modernism. Pound applies the strategy of imagism which pursues the direct treatment of the thing to his revision and translation of Chinese poetry. In his revised short poems such as Liu Che and Fan-Piece, For Her Imperial Lord, Pound presents hard pictorial images which crystallize intense moments. The poems from Pounds Cathay suggest the inner feelings of sadness or loss in the original poems through pictorial images which seem to present outward scenes objectively. Especially, Lament of the Frontier Guard juxtaposes pictorial images seemingly stripped of emotional association and creates the matrix of meaning with ideogrammic method to intensify the barren mood of the original Chinese poem. Although Pound is often accused of tampering with the original Chinese poems in the process of translation, it cannot be denied that his translation as appropriation has provided a breakthrough or turning point for English poetry by incorporating the heritage of Eastern literature into Western modernism.

This study aims to examine Philip Larkin's critical attitude toward commercialism and consumerism which buttress the modern capitalist society. The study will reveal another significant aspect of his poetic world hidden beneath two contrasting critical views on Larkin that he is a poet pursuing universal themes of human life beyond time and history, or he is a poet with racial prejudices, misogyny, and right-wing political view. In “Here,” Larkin portrays a changing view of post-war Britain in which people crowd into shopping malls to gratify their desires for material affluence with cut-price goods. In “The Large Cool Store,” he looks into the commercialized society which incites consumers to buy mass-produced cheap clothes and robs them of individuality. “Essential Beauty” contrasts the images of ideal life in huge advertising hoardings with sordid pictures of everyday life composed of "rained-on streets and squares." In “Sunny Prestatyn,” Larkin describes a girl's seductive posture in a commercial poster and criticizes the objectification of female sexuality in consumer society. On the basis of his long-time experiences as a university librarian in which he witnesses quantitative expansion and qualitative degradation of post-war universities, in “Posterity” Larkin satirizes the commercialized academic society in which research is determined by economic factors rather than scholastic curiosity and interest. By analyzing his poems in detail, this study will illuminate another aspect of the poet who looks into the issues of modern capitalist society dominated by commercialism and consumerism, and make a contribution to broaden critical perspectives on his poetry.
A Perspective on the In-between Identity in Cathy Park Hong’s Poetry
Vol.2021 No.10
This paper explores the perspective on the in-between identity of Cathy Park Hong, a second generation Korean-American poet, on the basis of her three poetry collections and one book of essays. In “Translating Mo’um,” the title poem of her first collection, Hong defines Korean as the language closely associated with physical experiences caused by pain. In “Zoo, the Korean language equivalent to the foreign body is compared to an unintelligible animal language which discriminates and alienates its speakers from the dominant group. On the contrary, in “All Aphrodisiacs,” Hong attempts to subvert the conventional hierarchical order of major language and minor language by showing the white male lover dominated by the female speaker who turns him on with untranslated Korean words. The “Desert Creole” spoken by the Guide in Dance Dance Revolution is a rhizomatic combination of multiple languages including English and Korean. Crossing the borderlines of various deterritorialized languages, the poet carries out a revolution by which she challenges and subverts the dominancy of the major language. Praising the “beige population” reproduced by miscegenating couples in the Desert, Hong not only presents the image of genuine ethnic diversity, but also suggests the potentiality of racial hybridity which is embodied by Jim as the in-between identity in “Ballad of Our Jim,” the first part of Engine Empire. The poems in this part reveal discrimination which victimizes racial others such as native Americans and the Chinese. By contrast, Jim, the only survivor of the gang, is presented as a potent symbol of racial hybridity holding the indigenous elements that cannot be assimilated by the dominant colonial forces, even though his fate is uncertain. The in-betweenness, however, provides him with the freedom from the sense of belonging, and in turn the poet herself with the creative impulse which enables her to keep up her poetic pursuits.
Vol.42 No.-
This paper aims to explore how Li-Young Lee’s poetry copes with his ethnic identity as a Chinese immigrant by analyzing his poems in Rose and The City in Which I Love You. Focusing on how he uses strong ethnic markers such as body and food, it shows that Lee expresses his love for his families, strengthens the ties with his ethnic group, and searches for the possibility to find his innermost self beyond his ethnic boundary. The body parts of his family members function as the metaphors to express his affection for and solidarity with them. Using hair as an ethnic marker, he emphasizes the generational continuity of his immigrant family. Furthermore, while confirming his strong ties with other Chinese immigrants with various physical features, he discovers the possibility of expanding his ethnic self to reach his truest self in “The Cleaving.” On the other hand, food is not only a means of othering ethnic groups as in “Persimmons,” but it can be a medium for love and bonding between family members. Lee expands food-eating metaphors in “The Cleaving” to confirm the sense of cultural solidarity with his ethnic group and also express his longing to pursue his truest identity beyond race and ethnicity, which is a threshold into his religious quest in later poems. In this sense, there is an unignorable connection, rather than a sharp breach, between his earlier poetry focusing on ethnic identity and his later poetry searching for his foundational place.

This paper analyzes Dance Dance Revolution by Cathy Park Hong, one of the leading second-generation Asian-American poets, and explores the meaning of revolution in its title and how it is related to the position of the poet belonging to an ethnic minority. To explore the nature of the revolution carried out by the poet, this study will employ some Deleuzean concepts such as nomad, rhizome, and deterritorialization. Dance Dance Revolution is a poem sequence in two voices. The Guide, a migrant or nomad working for a hotel in the Desert, is a former Korean dissident from the Kwangju Uprising of 1980. While she speaks a hybridized language called Desert Creole, the Historian interviews the Guide and annotates her commentaries in standard English. The Desert Creole spoken by the Guide is a rhizomatic combination of multiple languages including English and Korean. Crossing the borderlines of various deterritorialized languages, the poet carries out a revolution by which she challenges and subverts the dominancy of the major language. Praising the “beige population” reproduced by miscegenating couples in the Desert, Hong presents the image of genuine ethnic diversity. The poet also problematizes the validity of official history hiding and erasing many meaningful historical facts. In this poem sequence, Hong presents an imagined place, where ethnically diverse people liberated from the repression of historical and cultural roots use hybrid languages without reserve.

An increasing number of foreigners visit Korea for various reasons such as tourism, employment, and education. Moreover, medical institutions and treatment are one of the factors which attract foreigners to Korea, and the number of foreign patients is increasing. This study aimed to systematically review the existing literature regarding the quality and satisfaction on medical services perceived by foreign patients visiting Korean medical institutions and to suggest implications for future research and policies. This study analyzed a total of 28 articles which were published on domestic and international web-based electronic databases. The results indicated that the most studies focused on factors affecting satisfaction with medical services, and behavioral intentions. Furthermore, the studies dealt with various population groups from different countries including China, Russia, Japan, and the U.S. The studies which include Chinese who visit medical institutions in metropolitan area as the participants accounted for the largest portion. Among the factors that affect the satisfaction with medical services, the expertise of doctors was the most significant factors affecting satisfaction. Based on these findings, medical institutions should develop targeted strategies based on the nationality of the foreign patients. Moreover, it is also necessary to develop valid scales which reflect the characteristics of foreign patients to measure the perceived quality of medical institutions and satisfaction with medical services. Further studies should also focus on various factors which impact on satisfaction with Korean medical services to attract foreign patients.
