Vol.2 No.-
Geomancy or pungsu (fengshui in Chinese) is not of Korean origin, but is of Chinese origin, probably from the Loess Plateau. This idea was introduced to the Korean Peninsula along with the first waves of ancient Chinese culture. The exact date of the introduction of geomancy into Korea is not yet known. When researchers investigate the diffusion of geomancy into Korea, it is important to consider the following three points. (1) That the ancient practice of using 4 guardian deities while observing landforms of a proposed capital city site could be evidence of the introduction of geomancy into Korea. (2) The establishment of gardens (ponds and hills) in the South side (front) ground of a palace could be evidence of the diffusion of geomancy into Korea. This is because geomantic principles require having a watercourse in front of an auspicious site (myongdang, hyol). In geomancy, it is believed that the vital energy (senggi in Korean, shengqi in Chinese) can not cross water and thus is stored in the auspicious site. (3) In the study of the introduction of geomancy into Korea, a cross-cultural investigation will provide important perspectives which would otherwise not be available. It is suggested that the date of introduction of geomancy into the Korean Peninsula may date much earlier than the 8th Century that has previously been suggested by some scholars.

This paper aims to discuss the cultural characteristics of Korean place names with a special emphasis on the following aspects: 1. Sino-Korean names: Official Korean place names(e.g., the official names of administrative regions and cities) are Hanja (Sino-Korean) in origin. Sino-Korean place names often represent that these place names were directly imported from China or were adapted from Chinese names. 2. Traditionally, no places were named after great personalities: Traditionally no Korean place names of cities or administrative regions were named after national heroes or kings as a form of honouring and respecting them. This tradition must be from the Korean custom of avoiding the direct referance to one’s ancestors or great personalities by their first name. 3. The majority of indigenous Korean place names represent local landmarks or landscape characteristics 4. Korean place names are often associated with major religious beliefs. For instance, place names such as Wausan(Mountain of a reclining cow) and Yongsusan(Mountain of a dragon head) indicated people’s geomantic(fengshui) beliefs, while Puramsan(Mountain of a Buddha Head) was associated with Buddhism, and Hyojadong(Village of a filial son) represents society’s Confucian ethos. 5. Traditionally city streets in Korea were not named. Only after the introduction of Western culture to Korea were streets named.
