윤치부(Yoo Chi-boo) 제주학회 2016 濟州島硏究 Vol.46 No.-
이 글은 제주 출신 학자들이 제주 관련 자료를 주로 제주에서 번역하여 간행한 번역서에 수록된 제주 한시의 번역 양상을 고찰한 논문이다. 지금까지 밝혀진 제주 관련 자료의 최초의 번역은 1970년대 들어 나타나는데, 제주도교육위원회에서 향토 교육 자료로 간행한 『탐리문헌집』이 그것이다. 이 번역서에 수록된 자료들은 김상헌의 『남사록』, 이원진의 『탐라지』, 김석익의 『탐라기년』 등 일기체 한문수필이나 지지들이다. 이들 자료에는 적잖은 제주 한시들이 수록되었다. 이와 같은 제주 관련 자료의 번역은 1980년대와 1990년대 들어 조금씩 증가하는 양상을 보이다가 2000년대 들어 급격히 증가한다. 이런 배경에는 제주대학교 탐라문화연구소나 제주문화원과 같은 관련 기관에서 본격적으로 제주 관련 자료 번역에 힘썼기 때문이다. 제주 관련 자료의 범위도 한문수필이나 지지를 뛰어넘어 개인 문집까지 본격적으로 확대된다. 번역자의 면면도 오문복이나 김익수 같은 원로 한학자는 물론 한문학이나 국문학이나 사학 등을 본격적으로 공부한 중진학자나 소장학자들이 대거 번역 작업에 동참하고 있다. 그런데 이들 번역서에는 적잖은 문제점들을 노정하고 있다. 한시어의 정확한 고증 없이 한시를 번역함으로써 문맥이 통하지 않는 오역을 한다는 점, 한시어 주석이 상식적 차원에서 설명되어 한시어 설명에 도움을 주지 못하거나 필요한 한시어의 주석을 빠뜨림으로써 한시 해석에 오류를 보인다는 점, 한문 원전을 오독함으로써 작자의 정서와는 동떨어진 번역을 한다는 점, 이본에 따라 한시어의 변이현상을 파악하지 못함으로써 결국 정확한 번역을 하지 못한다는 점, 교정에 소홀하여 원전과 활자화한 원문이 일치하지 않는 점 등 여러 가지를 들 수 있다. 앞으로 제주 한시 번역이 한 걸음 더 도약하기 위해서는 이런 문제점들이 개선되어 좀 더 체계적으로 한시 번역 작업이 지속적으로 이루어져야 할 것이다. This paper is to investigate the translation aspects of Jeju poetry appeared in a foreign-language book mainly translated in Jeju and published by scholars from Jeju. So far the first translation of the material relating to Jeju appeared in 1970s and the title of it was Tamra literature collections published by Education Committee as a local training material. The works included in Tamramoohengip written in foreign-language are travel essays or geographical records such as Namsarok written by Sang-hem Kim, Tamraji written by Won-jin Lee and Tamraginyen written by Seok-ik Kim Also, many Jeju poetry written in Chinese characters were inducted. The translation of the materials related to Jeju had increased gradually in the 1990s and 1980s, but it showed a rapid increase in the 2000s because the relevant institutions such as Jeju Cultural center and Tamra Cultural Institute of Jeju University made efforts to translate materials related to Jeju in earnest. Also, the range of materials relating to Jeju had been expanded to private collection of works beyond travel essays written in Chinese characters or records about geography. In the aspects of the translator, the scholars of the leading group and the young group who studied Chinese literature, historical studies and Korean language study in earnest as well as veteran scholars of the Chinese classics such as Oh Moon-bok and Kim Ik-soo have participated in translating works. But these translations were exposed to considerable problems. The problems are as follows. First, there were errors in translation such as out of context due to translating the poetry without accurate historical research. Second, explanatory notes do not help explaining poetry because those of poetry were explained in commonsense level and there were errors in translation because necessary explanatory notes of the poetry were missed. Third the author of emotion was mistranslated by misreading the Chinese original text. Fourth, the end did not make an accurate translation because the semantic phenomena were not figured out due to the different version of poetry. Fifth, the original translated texts did not match the printed texts due to neglecting proofreading the original texts. In order to jump forward one more step in Jeju poetry translation of these issues will have to be done in a more systematic improvements in poetry translation work continuously.
