Arrùno acid transpoπers play an important role in supplying nutrition to cells and for cell proliferation. System L is a major nutrient transport system responsible for the Na+-independent transport of large neutral amino acids including several essential amino acids. In malignant tumors, a system L transporter L-type amino acid transporter 1 (LATl) is upregulated to support tumor cell growth. In the present study, we have examined the expression and function of system L amino acid transporter in FaDu human pharyngeal squamous carcinoma cells. RT-PCR, real-time quantitative RT-PCR and westem blot analysis have revealed that the FaDu cells express LATl together with its associaω19 protem 4F2hc, whereas the FaDu cells do not express the other system L isoform L-type amino acid transporter 2 (LAT2). 까le uptake of L-(14Clleucine by FaDu cells is Na+-independent and almost completely inhibited by system L selective inhibitor 2-aminobicyclo-(2,2,1)-heptane-2- carboxylic acid (BCH). The profiles of the inhibition of L-[I4Cllellcine uptake by variolls amino acids in the FaDu cells are comparable with those for the LA T1 expressed in Xenopus 。()(찌es. π1e majority of L-[I4Clleucine uptake is, therefore, mediated by LAT1 in the FaDu cells. These results suggest that the transport of neutral amino acids including several essential amino acids in the FaDu human pharyngeal squamous carcinoma cells mediated by LAT1. In addition, specific inhibition of LAT1 by such agents as BCH in pharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas will be a new rationale for anti-cancer therapy.

Myofibroma is a benign tumor composed of fibroblasts and myofibroblasts, occasionally occurring most commonly as a solitary lesion of soft tissue, skin, or bone in children younger than 3 years of age. Solitary lesion of myofibroma is exceedingly rare in adult jaws. This report describes a rare case of myofibroma in the mandible that occurred in a 41-year-old Korean woman.

The organotypic raft culture model has been shown to be a useful method for examining the effects of biochemical manipulation on various epithelial cell types, using in vitro conditions that simulate the in vivo environment of the tissue of origin. To investigate this method as a model for photodynamic therapy (PDT), we cultures the oral squamous carcinoma cell line YD-10B on fibroblast-containing collagen gels at the air-liquid interface and assessed the efficacy of PDT using a photosensitiser 5-ALA-hexenyl ester. PDT effect on YD-10B organotypic raft cultures after twenty-four hours was determined. The number of residual cells was significantly reduced in comparison to control at all four different conditions. PCNA immunostaining and TUNEL assay revealed that PDT inhibited cell proliferation and increased apoptosis. These findings suggest that the organotypic raft culture model provides an effective and rapid laboratory method of investigating strategies for PDT on oral precancerous lesions and squamous cell carcinomas.

In Korean traditional wooden architecture, joint performance varies with the material characteristics of timber, the form of joint, the precisionof timber-trimming and the like. Case studies prove that the beam-to-column joint type has large influence on the degrees of deformation and spacing. This is not only true of single-story buildings, but also of large-scale multi-story buildings more apparently. Therefore, this study followed the processof examining to joint types, producing their specimens and testing their structural performance. As a consequence of structural test, the dovetail jointspecimen showed the best outcomes of the maximum load and rigidity. Synthesizing the structural performances by respective forms of joints, theDoraegeoji dovetail joint specimen showed the higher performance, followed in order by the Doraegeoji mortise joint specimen and the Tongneokodovetail joint specimen. The structural performance of a building varies with the characteristics by the shouldering forms of penetrating beams andwith the joint types within the columns. This should be considered for the new construction or restoration of multi-story buildings, and be continuouslyresearched henceforth. 한국 전통 목조 건축물의 경우 구조적 성능은 재료 특성, 접합부의 형태, 치목의 정밀도 등에 따라 다르게 나타난다. 기존 사례 연구에서도 보와 기둥 접합부 형태는 변형 및 간격의 정도에 큰 영향을 미친다는 것을 보고하고 있다. 이는 단층 건물뿐만 아니라 대규모 다층 건물의 경우에도 마찬가지로 나타나고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 접합부 형태에 대해 분석하고 모형을 제작하고 구조적 성능을 테스트하는 과정을 거쳤다. 그 결과, 주먹장맞춤의 실험체에서 최대 하중을 나타냈다. 각각의 형태의 접합부에 의한 구조적 성능을 종합하면, 도래걷이 주먹장맞춤이 가장 높은 성능을 나타내었으며, 다음으로 도래걷이 장부맞춤의 순으로 나타났다. 건물의 구조적 성능은 관통하는 보의 치목 형태와 기둥 내부의 접합부 형테에 따라 다르게 나타남을 알 수 있었으며, 이는 다층 건물의 신축 또는 복원을 위해 고려되어야하며 이후 계속 연구되어야 할것으로 사료된다.

We have descr ibed a case of ora l mucosal lesions with featu res of TEG that had a CD68 posite atypical cells. The large cells showed s trong pos itive for CD68‘ but negative for CD30. The sma ll Iymphocy tic cells exprerssed CD3. This case was interpreted as an atypical histiocytic g ran uloma .
