This study investigates the backgrounds of the foundation of Dobong Lecture Hall and the political setting of its enshrinement of JeongAm and WuAm, under the diachronic perspective of the local community. The study reveals that Dobong Lecture Hall, which amounted to the spiritual culture community in the 17th and the 18th century, served as both the ideological prop and the material base for contemporary political force. Dobong Lecture Hall also functioned as the spiritual culture community for people pursuing the consciousness of criticism and the spirit of resistance, both of which were symbolized by JeongAm and WuAm. The ideal and the spirit of Dobong Lecture Hall was succeeded until the mid 18th century, which can be confirmed through many prose collections or epigraphs written by Confucian scholars visiting the place. Dobong Lecture Hall became the life culture community including economic life and ethnic customs, as a result of the development of commodity economy and the opening of modern markets in the late 18th century. The shift of its role can be affirmed by the fact that this area had a large market, the Nuwon controlling the market, and the neighboring Seonghwangdang. The aforementioned facilities were forcibly damaged or removed during the period of Japanese colonial rule and development for modernization. Although traditional local communities in this area now remain only as historical sites and records, they have great implications for the diachronic illumination of an area study, in that their research yield invaluable results concerning the process of historical change and transition of the local community.
