This article examines the symbolism and function of Switzerland in both The Idiot and The Devils, two of the four major novels by Dostoevsky. Drawing upon Ashimbaeva's discussion of the topic, I will contrast two aspects of Switzerland: the idealistic Switzerland (The Idiot), replete with its biblical associations, and the Switzerland (The Devils), which represents the political radicalism of contemporary Europe. It is Switzerland where Petr Verkhovensky's idea about Stavrogin was conceived, along with Stavrogin's illegitimate son. The tragedy in The Devils can be traced to Switzerland; it was the origin of the catastrophic events. In contrast, the Switzerland of The Idiot serves as the backdrop of Myshkin's characterization, which offers a highly idiosyncratic biography that spells out his quintessential traits. Taken together, I argue that the primary importance of Switzerland in The Idiot lies in the shaping of the protagonist; whereas the Switzerland of The Devils is not only a hotbed of dangerous ideas but also the space where the seeds of the tragedy are sown on the level of the plot development.

There is no question that Alyosha Karamazov is the hero of The Brothers Karamazov. However, Alyosha’s presence appears to be overshadowed by his brothers. Alyosha’s status as the hero of the novel can be discussed from various perspectives, but this paper examines Alyosha from the vantage point of “family,” a theme Dostoevsky took very seriously in the 1870s when he was writing the novel. Specifically, I will discuss Alyosha’s relationship with his mother, his father(s), and his brothers. In particular, a close attention will be paid to the blood relations as well as the extended family relations such as his spiritual father and the boys. This paper will highlight the fact that Alyosha is not only a son and a younger brother but also a father and an elder brother. Alyosha’s active love is instrumental in creating a new family based on brotherhood. However, Alyosha fails to establish such a relationship with Smerdyakov, a fourth Karamazov brother. The failure is indicative of Alyosha’s imperfection. Even if Alyosha follows Father Zosima in his footsteps, he is, after all, a hero incomplete.

Lev Tolstoy traveled in Western Europe only twice all throughout his long life. Moreover, he did not write travelogues, quite an unusual phenomenon in comparison with his fellow Russian writers. Consequently, Tolstoy’s travels have not attracted much critical attention. Yet he kept a journal and wrote letters during his travels. An examination of Tolstoy’s non-fiction writing (diary and letters) and fictional works proves that Tolstoy’s experience inspires his fiction writing, but in different manners. “Lucerne” and Anna Karenina serve as good examples to explore the relationship between Tolstoy’s personal experience of the West and his literary treatment in fiction. “Lucerne” demonstrates that Tolstoy’s first European travel was immediately and directly translated into fiction. A clear direction of development is detected: first, Tolstoy wrote diary, and subsequently expanded it in a letter addressed to a critic. Finally, the writer completed his manuscript within two weeks and got it published shortly afterwards. “Lucerne” reveals a process of Tolstoy’s creative writing. Anna Karenina, on the other hand, relies upon a different method. Tolstoy projects his travel experience onto two female characters: Anna and Kitty. In particular, Kitty’s experience in Soden overlaps with Tolstoy’s, focusing on the theme of a brother’s death. However, Tolstoy’s choice of Kitty, not his alter-ego, indicates the artistic distance between his real-life experience and the fictional character’s.

This paper aims at examining new inserts and changes that appear in the 1842 version of "The Portrait" by Nikolai Gogol to find out an answer to what motivated the often enigmatic writer to revise the work that was included in Arabesques (1835). A close attention has been paid to the plot and the build-up of characters of "The Portrait." Overall, Gogol grew out of the Romantic views of the supernatural in favor of rendering realistic coloration to the 1835 Arabesques version, the consequence of which is that Chartkov becomes more vulnerable to temptations due to social conditions. More importantly, I argue that Gogol's firsthand experience of Rome left an unmistakable imprint on the revised work as the monk-artist's son emerges as an ideal alternative between Chartkov, an artist who squandered his talent to pursue wealth and fame, and the iconographer who represents the Russian faith. In introducing the blood ties between the iconographer and the promising artist who studied in Italy, Gogol suggests an ideal compromise between secular and religious arts. In particular, the iconographer's son is nothing short of the mouthpiece for Gogol, inasmuch as he gives the lengthy sermon on the right path a talented artist should take. The structure and the message filled with didactic urge point to the similarity that bind "Taras Bul'ba" and "The Portrait." It is noteworthy that Gogol lends both heroes an opportunity to speak up their highly moralistic and politically conservative speech. In conclusion, Gogol apparently strives to strengthen his artistic values that encompass moral ideas. Consequently, Gogol's presence and desire are recognized in the image of artists he created in the revision.

Boris Akunin’s Yin and Yang occupies a special status in the Fandorin series as it is the only play. The title of the work indicates the significance of the concept of yin and yang, a fundamental element of Eastern philosophy. This article examines how the principle of dualism plays out in the various dimensions of the work. Most notably, Akunin offers two versions of the story: “the white version” and “the black version.” The two versions are built upon different plots and conclusions. It is also worth noting the different world-views of the two versions. Moreover, the principle of dualism is strengthened by the binary pairs such as the East-West and the master-servant. Since Fandorin (Russian) is the master and Masa (Japanese) is the servant, the reader may be inclined to think that they represent the hierarchical relationship of the East and the West. However, a close reading of the work reveals that they form a harmonious team, effectively working to solve the murder cases. Not only Masa but also other servants play an important role in the work, an indication that the servants are on the equal footing with their masters. Their actions are in correspondence with Fandorin’s politically correct statement that “servants are also humans.” All in all, while Yin and Yang is set in the nineteenth-century Russia, it demonstrates the postmodern outlook of the world, rejecting the idea of one and the only interpretation and the authoritative hierarchy.

The eighth and final part of Anna Karenina has been regarded idiosyncratic for the absence of the heroine and its heavily philosophical treatment of Levin's contemplations. Moreover, the anti-war sentiment toward the Russo-Turkish war ignited a heated discussion upon its publication. Against the background of these reservations, this paper aims at defending Part Eight by examining its critical role in the novel. Part Eight is not devoid of the eponymous heroine as her presence is as powerful as before, given the impact of her memory on Vronsky. Her legacy as the revengeful judge is finalized and hereby Anna's opposition to Levin is also finalized. Their contrast stands out in Levin's interior monologue, a counterpart to Anna's in Part Seven. Levin's monologue spells out what drives Anna to self-destruction, while Levin survives the tormenting doubts about life. Unlike Anna, Levin does not fall prey to the "swindling of reason." Along this line, the theme of war serves as a platform to disclose the hypocrisy pervasive in the society. In the end, it is significant that the final part of the novel ends in Levin's "family happiness," embracing individual, social and family dimensions, and thereby marking an appropriate finale to the novel dealing with happy as well as unhappy families.
