영문소설과 영화 버텨읽기를 통한 페미니스트 페다고지의 실천적 모색

This study explores the ways to teach feminist English novels with their screen versions in English Novel class under the assumption that the films will enlarge the students' cultural experiences through their visualization and will eventually expand the limited communicative space of the written media. It also examines spectator's position with the brief discussion of Laura Mulvey's gaze theory and the feminist film reception theorists of the 1990s. The conclusion of the discussion is that the Korean women students in their early twenties as film spectators show various responses and positions without exactly following Mulvey's spectator paradigm. In the process, the critical reading of feminist novels in advance before watching their possibly popularized or commercialized screen version is strongly recommended in guiding students' appreciation of films. The feminist English novels and their screen versions chosen for analysis and teaching methods are Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, Jean Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea, Robert Stevenson's Jane Eyre(1944), Franco Zeffirelli's Jane Eyre(1996), and John Duigan's Wide Sargasso Sea. Comparision of different screen versions such as Stevenson's Jane Eyre(1944) and Zeffirelli's can be a good way to teach that film production is the result of the interaction of the films and the spectators' ideology. Zeffirelli's version reflects the improved feminist consciousness of the spectators in 1990s. The comparison of a novel and its screen version such as Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea and Duigan's reconfirms the fact that even the screen version of feminist novel can deliver patriarchal messages to the core.

Implying Gayatri Spivak’s well known question, “Can the Subaltern Speak?” this study explores the possibility of representation of the autistic as a speaking subject through the analysis of British writer, Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. Despite the gap between the author’s idea of his protagonist and his actual representation in the novel, this study explains the contributions of this novel to the understanding of autistics and to autism in general. The autistic spectrum presented through the protagonist in this novel turns out to be flexible and thus deconstructs the rigid boundary of the disabled and the normal people. Another interest of this paper is to examine the ways in which the novel’s choice of the genre of detective novel and the autistic protagonist’s narrative in which sensory images replace linguistic level in various ways defamiliarize and challenge the existing language and perspectives of the readers.

Mukhopadhyay’s Mind Tree goes beyond medical informations about self, emotion, and the cognitive channels of the typical classic autistic. The value of this memoir can be sought in that, different from the negative ideas of neurologists in general, it shows the possibility of classic autistic’s ‘bildung’ through education. Furthermore, implicating various methodologies of language education for the limited cognitive and sensory channels of the classic autistic, the book is an intriguing interdisciplinary reading specifically related to special education. Most importantly, Mind Tree creates a unique piece of literature through the young autistic’s limited words and cognitive channel of synesthesia. The author’s incommunicable anxiety, fear, and his mother’s suffering are all as deep and intense as those of neurotypical literature. The memoir shows the possibility that classic autistic’s unique cognitive and sensory channels can defamiliarize the neurotypical literature and thus extend the existing literary arena.
