Background: Tracheal deviations are encountered frequently in head and neck tumors especially in thyroid cancer. Dyspnea and stridor are symptom calling for surgery. The method of evaluation in tracheal deviation is not well established yet. This paper is aimed to suggest objective tools to evaluate tracheal deviation in relation to cervical vertebra. Material and Method: Ten cases of thyroid cancers were recruited retrospectively. Tracheal inner shadow and shape of cervical vertebra were reconstructed three dimensionally using 3D-doctor to compare position of trachea in relation to vertebral body. Extent of deviation was scored in relation to both lateral borders of vertebral body. Angles between trachea and spinous process were measured in axial CT and compared between study group and control group. Results: Deviation scores were statistically significant between study group (mean=1.1) and control group (mean=0) (p=0.0008). Deviation angles at maximal tumor size in study group (mean=160.3 Degrees) and deviation angles of control group (mean=177.1 Degrees) were statistically significant (p=0.0007). Angles at maximal deviation of three dimensional images ages in study group (mean=162.6 Degrees) and deviation angles of control group (mean=177.1 Degrees) were statistically significant (p=0.0089). Conclusion: Tracheal deviation can be evaluated using scoring of three dimensional images and measuring angle between trachea and vertebral spine.

We developed a CCD camera that can observe wide fields on the sky. We tested the field of views using various lenses. For cooling the CCD chip, we used a thermoelectric cooling device and tested the cooling efficiency. This camera will continuously observe a part of the sky. The data from the camera will be used to decide the current weather condition by the real-time star counting program (SCount) which will be developed later.

Benign symmetric lipomatosis is a rare disease. Its main characteristic is the symmetric massive deposits of adipose tissue, in unencapsulated form, predominatly on the neck, shoulder, back and upper exterimities. We report a case of a sixty one years old man with benign symmetric lipomatosis. He had a history of alcoholic liver cirrhosis. Due to cosmetic defomity, he wanted surgical treatment. We did a cervical lipectomy. He was satisfied with the result, and there was no evidence of recurrence.

Background and Objectives : With the development of computerized systems, an objective evaluation methods of nasal speech and nasal geometry have become readily available by means of a simple, noninvasive technique. In this study, we assessed the nasality, nasal formant, nasal volume and nasal area in patients with hypertrophic rhinitis before and after turbinate surgery. Material and Method : With the nasometer, we measured nasalance, which reflects the ratio of acoustic energy output of nasal sounds from the nasal and oral cavities. With CSL 4300B, we measured nasal formants. We used acoustic rhinometer to measure nasal area and nasal volume. Postoperative changes of above factors were compared with preoperative values. Paired t-test and Pearson's correlation were used for statistical analysis. Results : The first nasal formant frequency, nasalance scores of three passages(baby, mamma and rabbit passages), minimal cross sectional area(MCA) of narrow side, nasal volume of narrow side and nasal volume of wide side had increased significantly after turbinate surgery (p <0.05). The MCA and nasal volume of narrow side and MCA of wide side showed significant correlation with nasalance score of rabbit passage and baby passage showed significant correlation with nasal volume of narrow side(p<0.05). Conclusion : There were significant increases in nasalance scores, first nasal formant frequency, MCA and nasal volume after turbinate surgery. Thus, we must consider the possibility of voice changes postoperatively in professional voice users.

안면신경마비 환자의 마비 정도를 평가하는 방법은 여러 가지가 있고, 저자는 이를 컴퓨터를 이용한 분석 방법을 활용하여 환자의 마비 정도를 평가하는 방법으로 응용하여 보았고 이 중 4예에서 활용가능성을 검증해 보았다. Evaluation of facial motion is very difficult and there are few objective tools to quantify or qualify facial motion. House-Brackmann grading system and ENoG are the tools mentioned above. To establish a simple, objective evaluation system of facial motion, we used computerized image-difference analysis system. Facial motions of 4 patients with facial palsy were analyzed utilizing computerized image-difference analysis system, Image capturing, subtraction and thresholding techniques were used to anlayze resting, smiling and eye-closing motions of face. The thresholded image after subtraction of resting face from eye closing face showed greater movement in eye area than in mouth area. This result suggests that it is possible to use image analysis system to access facial motion of subjects wish facial palsy.

The effects of smear and well resistance should be taken into account for the design of sand drains. Practically, simple design, which employs the method using 112 reduced diameter of drains or assuming the coefficient of consolidation in horizontal direction equals to that in vertical direction, based on the theory neglecting these effects, has been used. In this study, the reliability of existing simple design methods as well as the influences of smear and well resistance was investigated with the equations proposed by Hansbo and Onoue. It is shown that the consolidation time is chiefly governed by the effect of smear for drains with highly permeable sands. For general soil condition and placing type of sand drain, consolidation time is underestimated for simple design wi어. 1/2 reduced diameter of drains, and it is overestimated for that with the assumption that the coefficient of consolidation in horizontal direction equals to that in vertical direction. Through the investigations on different reduced diameter, it was shown that simple design with 1/4 reduced diameter of drains yielded the reliable results with errors less than 6%.

Evaluation of the KASI Detector Performance Test System Using an Andor iKon M CCD Camera

The characterization of detectors installed in space- and ground-based instruments is important to evaluate the system performance. We report the development of a detector performance test system for astronomical applications using the Andor iKon M CCD camera. The performance test system consists of a light source, monochromator, integrating sphere, and power meters. We adopted the Czerny–Tuner monochromator with three ruled gratings and one mirror, which covers a spectral range of 200–9,000 nm with a spectral resolution of ~1 nm in the visible region. Various detector characteristics, such as the quantum efficiency, sensitivity, and noise, can be measured in wide wavelength ranges from the visible to mid-infrared regions. We evaluated the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) detector performance test system by using the performance verification of the Andor iKon-M CCD camera. The test procedure includes measurements of the conversion gain (2.86 e−/ADU), full well capacity (130 K e−), nonlinearity, and pixel defects. We also estimated the read noise, dark current, and quantum efficiency as a function of the temperature. The lowest measured read noise is 12 e−. The dark current at 223 K was determined to be 7 e−/s/pix and its doubling temperature is 5.3°C ± 0.2°C at an activation energy of 0.6 eV. The maximum quantum efficiency at 223 K was estimated to be 93 % ± 2 %. We proved that the quantum efficiency is sensitive to the operating temperature. It varies up to 5 % in the visible region, while the variation increases to 30 % in the near-infrared region. Based on the comparison of our results with the test report by the vendor, we conclude that our performance test results are consistent with those from the vendor considering the test environment. We also confirmed that the KASI detector performance test system is reliable and our measurement method and analysis are accurate.

An accessory ostium can be found in the posterior fontanelle of the maxillary sinus during endoscopic examination of the nasal cavity in approximately one quarter of patients. It is not uncommon to find an accessory ostium in a CT scan. Recently, we removed a polyp from inferior meatus of a thirteenyears old girl. After polypectomy, we found accessory ostium of maxillary sinus in the inferior meatus. As far as we know, this is the first case of ectopic accessory ostium of maxillary sinus.
