        자질 기하 이론연구

        유복순 대한언어학회 1997 언어학 Vol.5 No.1

You, Bok-Soon. 1997. A Study on Feature Geometry. Linguistics, 5-1, 211-227. One of the most important issues in the description of phonological phenomena is the problem of how to represent phonological representation., American structural linguists viewed phonemes as the smallest sound unit. But for the generative phonologists who are represented by Chomsky and Halle, the smallest sound unit is not the phoneme but the distinctive feature. In generative phonology, a phonological unit is a bundle of distinctiave features. They thought that the distinctive features are unordered and independent. They also assumed that there was only one phonological tier. In this linear phonological representation, some problems transpired. For example, there is no way to represent complex segments in which two articulators are involved simultaneously in the articulation. And also the linear phonology does not have any features to unify consonants and vowels as natural classes. In order to solve these problems, Goldsmith argued that segmental features and tonal features should be represented in two different tiers: one is the tone tier; the other is the melody tier. In non-linear representation, the phnological relation among distinctive features is not unordered and radom but ordered and hierarchically organized. (Hannam University)

        자질 수형도에 대한 새로운 제안

        유복순 한국현대언어학회 1996 언어연구 Vol.12 No.1

In this dissertation, I attempt to show how we can solve some problems of the linear feature theory in relation to the hierarchical feature theory and to show how simply and naturally underspecified hierarchical feature representation describes English and Korean assimilations. I will also show that the Korean and English assimilation phenomena can be explained naturally using the model proposed by means of underspecification and the omission of predictable features. I suggest a new hierarchical feature model based on previous models. This model deals with underspecification. Underspecification is based on the least specified underlying representation; in other words, predictable redundant features remain empty in the underlying representation, and later these features are filled by redundancy rules.

An Experimental Study on Flapping in English Teaching

        유복순 한국영어어문교육학회 2012 영어어문교육 Vol.18 No.4

This study examines the feature of flap occurring in word-level and phrase level in American English. The subjects are university students who are non-native speakers of English. 103 students participated. Sentences were made with flapping /t/, /d/. Results showed that experimental groups were improved significantly more than comparison group. Experimental group showed a higher score of mean at the post-test analysis. Moreover, results from each group also revealed that different mean score indicated a statistical significance. The results of the statistical analysis indicated that the two groups were significantly different in mean score at the post-test. These results showed that stylistic variation in flapping should be explicitly taught so that users are aware of it. In the absence of sufficient exposure to English, EFL learners can only acquire appropriate usage norms through instruction.
