1990년 이후 2015년 현재까지 실시되고 있는 경복궁 발굴조사 결과, 침전권역을 비롯한 주요 건물지에서는 수만 점의 청기와가 출토되었다. 경복궁에서 출토된 청기와에 대한 보다 정밀한 연구를 진행하기 위해서는 중국 유리와에 대한 정보는 필수적이다. 중국 사료에서 유약을 발라 구운 기와, 즉 유리와가 지붕의 건축자재로 처음 사용되기 시작한 것은 북위 때부터이다. 이후 수・당대 유리와는 호화스러운 건축에 사용되었다. 원나라 대부터는 국가의 지휘아래 유리 가마들이 만들어지기 시작하였고, 마침내 명・청대에는 유리와의 사용이 규격화 되고 그 제작기술 또한 절정에 이르게 되었다. 이와 더불어 명대에는 건축물의 등급에 따라 사용되는 유리와의 색채를 철저히 제한하였다. 중국의 고대 건축물의 색채에는 한대의 음양오행설의 원리가 크게 반영되었는데, 유리와 또한 다르지 않았다. 유리와의 유약색은 황색, 청색, 자색, 백색 등 다양한데 이러한 색의 차이는 각 건물의 위계를 잘 나타내었다. 황색은 황제 전용의 존귀한 색으로 인식되었다. 따라서 오직 황제의 궁전 및 황제와 황후의 무덤, 사묘 등에서만 사용할 수 있었다. 반면 녹색의 유리와를 사용하는 것은 황제의 후대 자손에 대한 희 망을 표현한다. 따라서 녹색 유리와가 사용된 대표적인 건물은 태자궁, 천단, 선농단, 일단, 월단 등이다. 또한 친왕과 군왕 등의 저택도 녹색 유리와를 사용하였다. 이러한 중국의 건축제도와 기술은 주변 국가들 에게도 많은 영향을 주었다. Gyeongbokgung Palace excavation results since 1990 until now progressed, the main building sites have been excavated a large amount of blue tile. This is an important material data to prove 『the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty』 record that the main building of the palace were covered with blue tile. The technique of building blue tile was originated from China. In order to proceed with the accurate study of blue tile, the beginning and transition of the chinese glass tile and information about the color and the meaning are required. The glazed tile from the chinese historical materials, in other words glass tile, had first used as a building material since the Northern Wei Dynasty. subsequently, Glass tile was used to posh building. Finally, the glass tile was standardized and its production technology also came to the climax in the Ming, Qing Dynasty. In addition, there was thoroughly commanded limit the color of the glass tile to be used in accordance with the degree of architectural. Glass tile had become important construction materials in the imperial architecture. In the color as well as the glass of Chinese ancient architecture, the Yin-Yang principles and the Five Elements theory were reflected. The differences in the color glaze of glass represented the hierarchy of each building well. The yellow glass was used as the Emperor’s exclusive color while the green(blue) glass was used for the Princes and the Crown Prince's residence. The Chinese construction systems and technology has a great influence even in neighboring countries.
