사중복음은 1888년에 심프슨(A. B. The Fourfold Gospel comes from a book published in 1888 by A. B. Simpson. Much of the work in church history and historical theology has followed the beginning of its history from that date, but the history of the Fourfold Gospel does not simply begin in 1888 and move forward. A. B. Simpson noted that the four parts of his theological work were present already within earlier nineteenth-century Evangelical writings. I propose that we use the methodology of Jaroslav Pelikan and make a longer reading, noting that “the Apostles Creed’s communion of saints” is heralded in two directions: through time and through space. Through time it is tradition (traditio). Through space it is mission (missio). The Bible has many references using the terms: “to all generations” (traditio) and “to the ends of the earth” (missio). Within the past thirty years, the church of the global south testified of new and vibrant churches in Africa and Asia. But the emphasis on the spread of Christianity (geographical and cultural diversity) has meant that less emphasis is placed on theological or confessional traditions. The fifth century theologian Vincent of Lerins contributed his “canon” to the church for the purpose of measuring orthodoxy. By looking at two thousand years of historical theology through the Vincentian canon, we can see a relationship between Simpson’s “Fourfold Gospel” (savior, sanctifier, healer, and coming king) and John Calvin’s threefold ministry of Christ (as priest, prophet, and king). A longer reading of historical theology will provide a more unified whole, helping to correct a view limited by historical periodization and denominational categories.
