In this study, experimentally investigated are the performance characteristics of heat pump system using CO2 as a refrigerant and geothermal heat as a heat source. Cooling and heating capacities and COP of the system are analyzed for various system performance variables such as refrigerant charge, expansion valve opening, compressor frequency and existence of internal heat exchanger. Results showed that there exist an optimum amount of refrigerant charge and expansion valve opening position which appear at the maximum point of COP curve. Cooling and heating capacity either increase or decrease with the compressor frequency dependent of the direction of compression ratio. In the case of the system with the internal heat exchanger, cooling capacity was increased about 4.0% whereas heating capacity was decreased about 0.89% compared to the case of without internal heat exchanger.
