Damping updating of a building structure installed with an MR damper
우성식,이상현 국제구조공학회 2013 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.12 No.6
The purpose of this paper is to identify through experiments the finite element (FE) model of a building structure using a magnetorheological (MR) fluid damper. The FE model based system identification (FEBSI) technique evaluates the control performance of an MR damper that has nonlinear characteristics as equivalent linear properties such as mass, stiffness, and damping. The Bingham and Bouc-Wen models were used for modeling the MR damper and the equivalent damping increased by the MR damper was predicted by applying an equivalent linearization technique. Experimental results indicate that the predicted equivalent damping matches well with the experimentally obtained damping.

In this study, the performances of a passive tuned mass damper (TMD) and a semi-active TMD (STMD) were evaluated in terms of seismic response control of elastic and inelastic structures under seismic loads. First, elastic displacement spectra were obtained for damped structures with a passive TMD and with a STMD proposed in this study. The displacement spectra confirmed that the STMD provided much better control performance than passive TMD and the STMD had less stroke requirement. Also, the robustness of the TMD was evaluated by off-tuning the frequency of the TMD to that of the structure. Finally, numerical analyses were conducted for an inelastic structure of hysteresis described by the Bouc-Wen model. The results indicated that the performance of the passive TMD whose design parameters were optimized for an elastic structure considerably deteriorated when the hysteretic portion of the structural responses increased, and that the STMD showed about 15-40% more response reduction than the TMD.
IRREDUCIBILITY OF POLYNOMIALS AND DIOPHANTINE EQUATIONS
우성식 대한수학회 2010 대한수학회지 Vol.47 No.1
In [3] we showed that a polynomial over a Noetherian ring is divisible by some other polynomial by looking at the matrix formed by the coefficients of the polynomials which we called the resultant matrix. In this paper, we consider the polynomials with coefficients in a field and divisibility of a polynomial by a polynomial with a certain degree is equivalent to the existence of common solution to a system of Diophantine equations. As an application we construct a family of irreducible quartics over Q which are not of Eisenstein type.
The group of units of some finite local rings III
우성식 대한수학회 2009 대한수학회지 Vol.46 No.4
As a sequel to the papers [2, 3], we will complete our identification of the groups of units of the finite local rings Z_4[X]/(X^k+2t(X),2X^r) which is the most general type of finite local rings with a single nilpotent generator over Z_4.
Free cyclic codes over finite local rings
우성식 대한수학회 2006 대한수학회보 Vol.43 No.4
In [2] it was shown that a 1-generator quasi-cyclic codeC of length n = ml of index l over Z4 is free ifC is generated bya polynomial which divides X m 1. In this paper, we prove thata necessary and sucient condition for a cyclic code over Zpk oflength m to be free is that it is generated by a polynomial whichdivides X m 1. We also show that this can be extended to nitelocal rings with a principal maximal ideal.
Algebras with a nilpotent generator over $\mathbb{Z}_p^2$
우성식 대한수학회 2006 대한수학회보 Vol.43 No.3
The purpose of this paper is to describe the structureof the rings Zp2 [X ]=((X )) with (X ) a monic polynomial andX k = 0 for some nonnegative integer k. Especially we will see thatany ideal of such rings can be generated by at most two elementsof the special form and we will nd the `minimal' set of generatorsof the ideals. We indicate how to identify the isomorphism types ofthe ideals as Zp2 -modules by nding the isomorphism types of theideals of some particular ring. Also we will nd the annihilators ofthe ideals by nding the most `economical' way of annihilating thegenerators of the ideal.
