A total of 33 pine trees with symptoms of decline were collected in Jeonnam Province, South Korea, and were examined for the presence of nematodes. About 20% of the trees sampled were positive with Bursaphelenchus species. All Bursaphelenchus species were found in recently dead or dying trees. Based on morphological observations, the nematode extracted from the declining pine trees was identified as B. mucronatus. The highly pathogenic pine wood nematode B. xylophilus was not found in any pine trees sampled. B. mucronatus was easily reared on fungus Botrytis cinerea. Twenty one fungal isolates were isolated from dead trees, fallen twigs, and healthy pine trees. The fungal isolates belonged to Trichoderma genus and were dominant in the wood of partially declining pines. The blue‐stain fungi transmitted by the Monochamus beetle were not detected. The B. mucronatus population decreased markedly on Auxarthron reticulatum DY‐2 isolated from soils. The number of nematodes also reduced on Verticillium saksenae A‐1, a nematophagous fungus, and Beauveria bassiana, an entomopathogenic fungus. This observation suggested the fungal production of nematicidal activity against B. mucronatus. When the fungal culture filtrates were also used for nematicidal activity on B. mucronatus, the culture filtrates of A‐1, DY‐2 and B. bassiana showed over 50% mortality within 48 h exposure. The fungi BC4, BC5 and BC6 isolated from declining pine trees inhibited the reproduction of B. mucronatus, and their culture filtrates also expressed nematicidal activity, indicating a possible interaction between the fungi in pine trees and nematodes at microhabitat level.

Locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (LA-NSCLC) is composed of heterogeneous subgroups that require a multidisciplinary team approach in order to ensure optimal therapy for each patient. Since 2010, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network has recommended chemoradiation therapy (CRT) for bulky mediastinal disease and surgical combination for those patients with single-station N2 involvement who respond to neoadjuvant therapy. According to lung cancer tumor boards, thoracic surgeons make a decision on the resectability of the tumor, if it is determined to be unresectable, concurrent CRT (CCRT) is considered the next choice. However, the survival benefit of CCRT over sequential CRT or radiotherapy alone carries the risk of additional toxicity. Considering severe adverse events that may lead to death, fit patients who are able to tolerate CCRT must be identified by multidisciplinary tumor board. Decelerated approaches, such as sequential CRT or high-dose radiation alone may be a valuable alternative for patients who are not eligible for CCRT. As a new treatment strategy, investigators are interested in the application of the innovative radiation techniques, trimodality therapy combining surgery after high-dose definitive CCRT, and the combination of radiation with targeted or immunotherapy agents. The updated results and on-going studies are thoroughly reviewed in this article.

Tracheobronchopathia osteochondroplastica (TO) is an uncommon benign disease of an unknown etiology and it affects the cartilaginous walls of large airways. Most cases of TO have been reported to involve the lower two-thirds of the trachea and the proximal bronchi. Unlike the usual cases of TO, exclusive bronchial involvement and the formation of a solitary mass are very rare. We experienced an unusual case that had exclusive bronchial involvement and the formation of a solitary mass and this all mimicked lung malignancy. After surgical resection, we were finally able to diagnose the mass as bronchopathia osteochondroplastica. 기관골연골증이나 기관지골연골증은 큰 기도의 연골에 생기는 잘 알려지지 않는 병리를 가진 매우드문 양성질환으로 보고되고 있다. 대부분 하부기관이나 근위부 기관지에서 발생하는 것으로 보고되고 있다. 대부분의 기관골연골증과는 달리, 기관지를 벗어나서 종괴를 형성하는 기관골연골증은 매우드물다. 그러나 저자들은 기존의 보고와는 다르게 엽기관지에 종괴를 형성하여 육안적으로 폐암과유사한 형태를 지닌 기관골연골증을 치험하였으며, 수술적 절제 후 기관지골연골증임을 진단할 수있었다.

Chitosan has been used in many technical applications such as water treatment, fiber, food additives, and agricultural products. While many of these applications do not require regulatory approval, the entrance of chitin and chitosan into pharmaceutical, biotech, dietary supplementation and cosmetic applications will require significant improvement in documentation regarding these products. Establishing parameters such as the degree of deacetylation, molecular weight, viscosity, and the endotoxin content, will ensure uniformity and repeatability for those using such materials. The purpose of this paper is to review the current regulatory status of chitin-related products for successful commercialization.
