조선중후기 선교학과 四溟 惟政의 敎學觀

사명 유정은 보우·휴정과 함께 조선불교를 대표하는 상징적 인물이다. 그는 임진왜란 당시 전쟁에 참여했으며, 일본에 억류된 조선인 포로를 송환하였다. 때문에 신료와 유학자들은 사명당이 명리를 앞세워 본분인 수행과 중생교화에는 게을리 했다고 비판하기도 하였다. 그러나 그의 문집을 비롯한 허균의 증언은 사명당의 전란당시 활동은 모두가 수행과 백성을 위한 행보였다고 한다. 일찍이 사명당은 유학에도 조예가 있었으며, 보우와 휴정으로부터 불교경전뿐만 아니라 선 수행 역시 영향을 받은 그들의 대표적인 제자였다. 사명당은 당시 불교계의 선과 교학이 그 근원이 일치함을 주장하여 선종과 교종의 대립을 비판하기도 하였다. 이것은 스승 휴정과도 다른 입장이었다. 『법화경』과 『화엄경』과 같은 경전해석 역시 현실적 측면을 강하게 나타내고 있어 일정한 가치를 지니고 있다. 요컨대 사명당의 교학관은 불교적 측면뿐만 아니라 당시의 시대상황을 반영하고 있어 주목할 만하다. Sa-myung Yoo Jung is a symbolic figure representing Choseon Buddhism with Bowoo and Hyuchong. He participated in a war during the Imjin War, and repatriated Korean prisoners in Japan. Therefore, officials and scholars criticized Sa-myung dang for neglecting his practice and enlightenment for honor and profit. However, Huh Kyun"s testimony, including his writings, states that all of Sa-myung dang activities were a walk for the practice and the people. earlier, Sa-myung dang was acquainted with studying abroad, and their representative disciple was influenced by Bowoo and Hyuchong not only by Buddhist scriptures but also by Zen practices. Sa-myung dang also criticized the opposition between seon and Non-seon Buddhism by insisting that the origins of Buddhism"s seen and Non-seon Buddhism. This was a different position than the teacher"s Hyuchong. Scripture interpretation, such as the Lotus Sūtra and the Avatamsaka Sūtra, also has a certain value because it strongly represents the reality. In short, it is remarkable that the Sa-myung dang’s the Doctrinal Thought hall reflects not only the Buddhist aspect but also the current situation of the time.

일제강점기 지성들의 불교사 인식과 그 가치

일제강점기 한국불교는 불교의 전통성과 가치를 회복해야하는 과제를 안고 있었다. 근대라는 시점에서 불교개혁을 진행해야했고, 교단을 비롯한 불교계의 현안을 체계화시켜야 했다. 일제강점기 불교계 지성들의 불교사 연구는 이와 같은 명실상부한 배경 속에서 진행되었다. 불교는 수용이후부터 한국의 역사적 상황과 함께 운명을 같이 했다. 당시의 지성들은 한국불교사 연구를 통해 불교수용 이전과 이후의 변화를 주목하였다. 예컨대 한국인의 생활, 사상, 문명의 변화와 발달에는 반드시 불교가 자리 잡고 있음을 강조하였다. 아울러 한국불교는 인도와 중국불교를 집대성했을 뿐만 아니라 두 나라와는 다른 역사적 전개를 통해 그 정체성과 독자성을 선명히 하고 있음도 소개하였다. 이밖에 불교는 일제강점기라는 암울한 시대상황에 대해 민족주의자들이 주장했던 한국문화와 문명이 지닌 정체성과 우월성을 강조하는데 중요한 요소가 되기도 하였다. 결국 일제강점기 지성들은 한국불교사 연구를 통해 불교계의 현안뿐만 아니라 당면하고 있는 민족의 암울한 상황을 극복하기 위한 중요한 인자로 활용하고자 하였던 것이다. Korean Buddhism during Japanese colonial era was facing a mission of restoring the traditionality and value of Buddhism. It had to proceed on Buddhism reformation amid the modernization process, while systematizing the pending issues of Buddhist world including the religious body. The intellectuals in Buddhist world during the Japanese colonial era truly worked on Buddhist history research in this background. Buddhism shared its fate with the Korean historical situation ever since its acceptance. The intellectuals at the time focused on the change before and after the acceptance of Buddhism in their Korean Buddhist history research. For example, they emphasized the fact that Buddhism established itself in every change of life, ideology and civilization of Koreans. Moreover, they introduced that the Korean Buddhism did not only compile the Indian and Chinese Buddhism, but also clarified its identity and independence with a different historical development from the two countries. Additionally, Buddhism also played an important role of stressing the identity and superiority of Korean culture and civilization, as was argued by the nationalists in this dark age of Japanese colonial era. On balance, intellectuals during the Japanese colonial era attempted to overcome gloomy situation of the people as well as solve pending issues of Buddhist world by making use of historical studies in Korean Buddhism.

《周易》吉凶判定硏究

The Book of Changes is a book with a long history. Since the Han Dynasty, a specialized study of the main character, which is considered the best of the Five Views, has been formed. Due to the decline in initial social productivity, it is impossible to find a reasonable explanation for various natural phenomena and to accurately predict them. Therefore, The Book of Changes, a professional book on predicting good or ill luck fortune by fortune-telling has came out. As a special book for Chinese early society, The Book of Changes was able to predict good and ill luck through its unique method of judgment, and to avoid ill luck. In addition, a code of conduct that has a deep influence on the Chinese nation was presented through a good luck judgment. In this paper, the judgment of good and ill luck of the main character is attributed and analyzed, and the basis of the judgment is carefully examined to organize the unique way of thinking and value orientation shown by the judgment of the main character, and to explore its practical meaning. 《周易》의 역사는 유구하다. 漢代로부터 五經의 으뜸으로 꼽히는 《주역》은 전문 학문의 영역을 형성하고 발전시켜왔다. 초기에는 사회생산성의 저하로 각종 자연현상에 대한 합리적 설명이나 정확한 예측이 불가능하였다. 그리하여 점술로 길흉을 점치는 전문서인 《주역》이 나온 것이다. 《주역》은 중국 초기 사회의 卜筮 전문서로, 당시 특유의 판정방식을 통해 길흉을 예측하여 행운을 불러들이고 災禍를 피하려 했다. 《주역》은 또 이러한 길흉의 판정을 통해 행위규범을 제시하였고, 이는 중화민족에게 영향 준 바 컸다. 본고에서는 《주역》의 길과 흉의 판정방식을 귀납, 분석하고 그 판정근거를 검토하여 《주역》이 길흉의 판정을 통해 보여준 독특한 사유방식과 가치지향을 살펴보고 그 현실적 의의를 탐구한다.

兩亂 이후 碧巖 覺性의 佛敎中興

벽암 각성은 청허 휴정과 조선 중후기 불교계를 대표했던 부휴 선수의 제자이다. 그는 30년 동안 스승 밑에서 선교학을 수학했고, 수행의 모범이 되었다. 임진왜란과 병자호란 당시에는 전쟁에 참여하였고, 산성을 쌓았고 수비를 게을리하지 않았다. 이와 같은 그의 호국(護國)을 위한 행적은 승려가 왕조의 신민(臣民)임을 재확인하는 계기가 되었다. 왕은 그에게 시호를 내려 노고를 치하하였다. 산성을 쌓고 수비한 일은 이후 많은 사찰을 재건하고 불상을 조성하는 다양한 재건사업의 기초가 되었다. 체계적이고 효율적인 조직이 되었다. 벽암 각성은 부휴 선수와 함께 송광사(순천), 송광사(완주), 화엄사, 법주사, 쌍계사 등 많은 사찰을 복원하였다. 그와 제자들은 전라도 지역뿐만 아니라 강원도 등 많은 지역의 사찰 재건사업에 참여하여 효과적으로 완성했다. 이와 같은 노력은 탄압과 소외 받고 있었던 불교를 회생시키는데 기여하였다. 벽암 각성은 승려의 수행과 교육에 필요한 서적들 역시 간행하여 불교학이 활성되는 기초를 마련하였다. 그는 수행에 관한 저술작업을 통해 승려들의 의문과 오해를 해결해주기도 하였다. 결국 벽암 각성은 청허 휴정과 함께 나라를 지키고 불교를 회생시키는 대표적 인물이다. Byeokam Gakseong is a disciple of Buhyu Seonsu(浮休善修) and Cheongheo hyujeong(淸虛休靜), who represented Buddhism in the mid-late Joseon Dynasty. He studied the study of zen and non-zen Buddhism under his master for 30 years and became an example for practitioners. During the Imjin War(壬辰倭亂) and the Jurchens(丙子胡亂), he participated in the war, built a fortress, and did not neglect the defense. His deeds for national protection were an opportunity to reaffirm that the monks were the people of the dynasty. The king gave him title and praised him for his hard work. the work of building and defending the fortress became the basis for various reconstruction projects that later reconstructed many temples and created statues of Buddha. It has become a systematic and efficient organization. Byeokam Gakseong has restored many temples, including Suncheon Songgwangsa, Wanju Songgwangsa, Hwaeomsa, Beopjusa, and Ssanggyesa, together with Buhyu Seonsu. He and his disciples effectively completed the temple reconstruction project in many regions including Jeolla Province and Gangwon Province. Such efforts contributed to the revival of Buddhism, which had been oppressed and marginalized. Byeokam Gakseong also published books necessary for the training and education of monks, laying the foundation for active Buddhist studies. He also solved the doubts and misunderstandings of monks by writing about the practice. In the end, Byeokam Gakseong is a representative figure who protects the country and revives Buddhism along with Cheongheo hyujeong.

한국근현대불교는 한국역사의 격동기인 근대와 현대에 맞물려있다. 이 시기의 불교는 일제강점기, 해방, 한국전쟁의 역사적 경험 속에서 일본불교의 침투와 일본화 해방과 친일잔재 청산, 불교개혁이 지속적으로 진행되고 있었다. 전통과 근대의 혼란과 개혁은 한국불교 지성들에게 많은 과제를 남겼고 새로운 시대에 걸맞는 불교를 준비하기 위해 진력하였다. 한국근현대불교사연구는 이와 같은 역사적 경험속에서 그 가치를 규명하는 일이다. 그러나 시작은 그 시절 활동했던 고승의 후학이나 사찰에서 전개되었고, 점차 학자들의 관심을 갖기 시작하였다. 한국근현대고승연구는 전통시대의 그것과 같이 일정한 역사적 가치를 지니고 있는 것이 사실이다. 아울러 불완전한 한국불교사의 복원과 완성을 위해서도 이 시기의 연구는 필요한 일이다. 한국불교학계는 근현대고승연구를 위해 자료를 수집해야 하고, 객관적이고 엄정한 역사인식을 수립해야 하며, 다양한 주제와 광범위한 연구범위를 마련해야 한다. The modern and contemporary Korean Buddhism is intertwined with Korean history. Buddhism during this period witnessed and experienced the Japanese colonialism, Korean Independence, and Korean War. Korean Buddhism has undergone the influence of Japanese Buddhism as well as the liquidation of pro-Japanese remnants, and Korean Buddhist reform since then. The turmoil and reform of traditional era left many tasks for Korean Buddhist intellects to look ahead for Korean Buddhism ready for the future in terms of modernity. The study of modern and contemporary Korean Buddhist history in centered around finding Buddhist value out of such historical experience. As a start, we can unfold stories from his Buddhist monks who were active in those days together with their temples and successors. Gradually this kind of study began to attract scholars' attention nowadays. It is true that the study of high Buddhist monks in the modern and contemporary Korea has a certain historical value like that of the traditional era. In addition, research in this period is necessary for the restoration and completion of the imperfect Korean Buddhist history. The Korean Buddhist academia must collect data for the study of high Buddhist monks in the modern and contemporary Korea, and establish an objective and rigorous historical perception. In addition, various topics and a wide range of research should be prepared.
