The literary criticism of the postmodern era no longer sees accuracy as the ultimate goal of critics, but allows a critic to endow a text with new interpretation drawn from active misreading. As a demonstration, this research is supported by the concept of “intertextuality” in linking up Chen Yingzhen’s “O! Susanna” and Susanna from the Apocrypha, and “O! Susanna” is to be misread as a text that written to convert Susanna.
대학 교양영어 수업에서의 원어민교수와 비원어민 교수에 대한 학생들의 인식 및 태도 연구
여경희 한국영미어문학회 2012 영미어문학 Vol.- No.105
The purpose of this paper is to investigate what Korean university students think of their Native English Speaking Teachers (NEST) and Non-Native English Speaking Teachers(NNEST). In order to evaluate this, 756 students attending a university in a local area of South Korea participated in this study and were asked to answer the questionnaires about the attitudes toward NEST and NNEST. The students were divided into three groups according to their English levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. The results of the analysis show that, generally, the students prefer learning from NEST rather than NNEST but they show the strongest preference for learning from both NEST and NNEST when they are offered the opportunity to learn from both. The participants in this study think that the most important characteristic of a good English teacher is the ability to give clear explanations and to take efficient control of the class. There were no statistically significant differences between the three student ability levels in their responses about the attitude towards NEST and NNEST. Students want to learn English courses such as speaking, listening and reading from NEST and to learn English courses such as grammar and writing from NNEST. This appears to be the same in all three levels. The purpose of this study is to discuss and compare two approaches to using linguistic universals in the explanation of second language acquisition. The first approach is “Universal Grammar approach” within which the notions of parametric variation and markedness have been applied to second language acquisition. The second approach is “typological approach” which used the notion of implication to explain universals in second language acquisition. It is suggested that both the UG and the typological approach make many of the same fundamental assumptions about the nature of interlanguage and how such data are to be explained and that two approaches make different claims as to whether the grammars of primary languages and interlanguages are identical with respect to universals. More evidences are needed to decide which approach is better in explaining universals in second language acquisition.

The importance of explicit form-focused instruction is well recognized these days and the research has been focused on how to teach grammatical forms. Among several issues concerning instructional styles, this study deals with instructional modes: input-based and/or output-based instruction. There have been conflicting research findings regarding the efficacy of input-based or output-based instruction. To these conflicts the third view is added, which argues that input practice is better for comprehension skills ,and output practice for production skills, seeing language as one of many skills we can learn. Given this background, the present study proposed an experiment to test the argument of skill acquisition theory, and the results indicates that the specificity of practice effect in skill acquisition theory did not work for the learning of the third person singular -s of English.
Automatization in SecondLanguage Learning
여경희 한국영미어문학회 2006 영미어문학 Vol.- No.81
The concept of automatization which was first introduced in cognitive psychology is thought to be applied to the field of second language acquisition. This perspective sees the acquisition of second language as the acquisition of a complex skill. In this paper, two main approaches on automatization are introduced: rule-based and instanced-based and studies in second language acquisition which address both the rule-based and instance-based approaches are presented. And, finally, implications on how to teach second language in order to promote the automaticity are discussed. It is emphasized that in designing teaching materials for enhancing automaticity the most crucial feature is the 'repetition' of the practice and the idea of automaticity should be incorporated into the second language teaching curricula.

The different attitudes towards the poems of Li Shangyin (c.813-c.858), a prominent poet in late Tang Dynasty (618-907), have led to various evaluations on his personality. On one hand, the opposites of Li’s poems often criticize the personality of Li. On the other hand, the supporters of Li’s poems praise almost all aspects of him. This resulted in serious bias all over the studies on Li. Focusing on the historical context of the Tang Dynasty, this article analyses the limitations of the viewpoints of both the Li’s supporters and opposites, and points out that discussing the personality of Li is indeed not an appropriate way in knowing this historical figure. Since the Tang scholars were highly enthusiastic in obtaining political success, this article chooses to re-evaluate Li through the view of politics. Based on Li’s commentaries on the past historical events and current affairs and his performances in dealing with other officials, the article illustrates the weaknesses of Li and tries to provide an objective new understanding of this important poet.

The Effects of L1 Use in General English Classes at a Korean University
여경희 한국영미어문학회 2017 영미어문학 Vol.- No.126
In recent years, the role of students’ native language in second or foreign language class has been recognized by researchers as important. Three native English speaking instructors who can speak Korean language and their students participated in this study in order to investigate the effects of Korean use in general English classes at a Korean university through achievement tests. A 2 (pretest, posttest) X 2 (English only and English/Korean) repeated-measures ANOVA was conducted for the analysis of test scores. The results indicate that no statistically significant differences between groups and tests were found in all three instructor’s classes even though the raw mean scores of the English/Korean groups is slightly higher than within the English-only group. In comparison of students’ achievements in the three instructors’ classes, it was found that the performance of students taught by one instructor is significantly better than other students but this difference seems to result from the instructor’s teaching method rather than the use of Korean. The result of the present study might have pedagogical implications for effective teaching of English classes in Korea.
English Learning Motivation of Korean Local University Students: Level-based Analysis
여경희 한국영미어문학회 2013 영미어문학 Vol.- No.110
The purpose of this study is to examine the motivational aspects of Korean local university students who are taking the required English course in three different levels. A total of 784 students participated in this study and answered the questionnaire asking about students’ L2 learning motivation. Five motivational components that are most often discussed in L2 motivational research are investigated: Integ- rativeness, Promotion-based Instrumentality, Prevention-based Instrumental- ity, Ideal L2 Self, and Ought-to L2 Self. Learners’ Motivated Learning Behavior is used as a criterion measure. Out of the five scales, Integrativeness showed the highest mean values in all three levels. The beginner students had high Prevention-based Instrumentality compared to other levels. The correlation analysis among the motivational scales shows that Prevention-based Instru- mentality and Ought-to L2 Self were highly correlated and Integrativeness and Ideal L2 Self also showed high correlation. Even though the students showed the highest mean value in Integrativeness, the motivational scale that predicts the beginner and intermediate students’ motivated learning behavior most strongly was Ideal L2 Self and for the advanced students Promotion-based Instrumentality was the strongest predictor of students’ motivated learning behavior.
