This paper overviews the college English teaching system at Seoul National University, and discusses possible changes prerequisite for the betterment of its system. It observes that improvement of college English education is hard to achieve without reestablishing its roles and objectives, paying special attention to its intrinsic relation with English teaching at the pre- and post-higher education levels. The paper suggests that colleges and universities lay more emphasis on quality education, which is best tuned to their students’ future needs and wants.
Functional Projections in Korean ESL Learners' Interlanguage Syntax

This paper reviews and assesses some of the most recent advances made in the study of early Korean ESL learners' interlanguage syntax. The paper focuses on the inflectional layers of the so-called S-be-X construction, and shows that functional heads and their projections flourish vigorously at the commencement of second language acquisition.

본 논문은 구문문법의 이론적 체계에 바탕을 두어 자동구동사 구문의 구문적 본질을 탐구한다. 우선 자동구동사 구문을 자동이동 구동사 구문과 자동결과 구동사 구문으로 분류한 다음, 각 구문을 영어의 주요 논항구조 구문과의 상속 연계 관계에서 파악한다. 구체적으로는, 자동이동 구동사 구문이 자동이동 구문과 연계되고 자동결과 구동사 구문이 자동결과 구문과 연계됨을 밝힌다. 이러한 논의에 바탕을 두어, 영어의 자동구동사 구문이 영어의 주요 문장 유형에 속하는 핵심 구문임을 제안한다. 더불어 자동구동사 구문에 대한 구문문법적 이해가 영어를 외국어로 익히고 가르치는 맥락에서 어떻게 활용될 수 있는지에 대해 살펴본다. The paper explores constructional properties of intransitive phrasal verb constructions (IPVC) in English. It proposes that English IPVCs are grouped into two types: intransitive motion phrasal verb construction and intransitive resultative phrasal verb construction. Each type has an inheritance link relation with a major argument structure construction in English: the former with the intransitive motion construction and the latter with the intransitive resultative construction. This proposal enables us to contend that English IPVCs belong to major clausal types of the language. The paper concludes with pedagogical implications of constructional inquiry of IPVCs for teaching and learning English as a foreign language.

This paper observes how the third grade elementary English textbook does not provide target-like balanced language input. It proposes that the unbalance is attributed to the usefulness-based listing of communicative function expressions in the 7th National English Curriculum. The paper concludes that the problem is hard to resolve unless due and proper attention is paid to formal and structural aspects of the target language in designing national English curriculum and developing English textbooks.

The is the commonest word in English. This word is also known as one of the most difficult grammatical items for Korean learners of English as a foreign language. This paper focuses on the non-generic use of the English definite article, and examines the grammatical descriptions of the article in Advanced English Grammar and English Grammar in Use. It reveals that some of the important usages of the definite article are not included in 'the grammar books', and observes, following Park and Song (2001), that these unlisted usages cause much difficulty for Korean learners to improve accuracy in the article use. Underscoring the organic view of language, the paper proposes that a comprehensive and systematic understanding of 'grammar' is prerequisite for optimum efficiency in teaching the English definite article to Korean EFL learners.

This paper examines the implications of theoretical linguistics for language pedagogy, with its empirical basis on the foreign language development stages in Pienemann and Johnston.1987). The paper focuses in particular on the Minimalist Program with a view to exploring the nature of grammatical content organizing principles. It observes that the economy measure of the Program serves to delve into close relations between the 'easiness' and the 'simplicity' of grammar structures. This observation endorses the understanding that the research fruits of theoretical linguistics provide proper nourishment for the operational system of EFL teaching content organization.

The paper explores the grammatical nature of the English indefinite article, employing Nisbett’s socio-psychological framework. It reveals that this category serves to encode individuated oneness of a countable noun. In performing this task, the paper suggests pedagogical implications of its main proposal for teaching the English indefinite article to Korean-speaking English learners. 이 연구에서는 Nisbett의 사회심리학의 틀을 원용하여 영어 부정관사의 문법적 본질을 탐구한다. 이를 통해 이 문법범주의 가장 핵심적인 자질이 가산명사의 개체 단위를 나타냄을 밝힌다. 이러한 과업을 수행하는 과정에서 이 논문의 주된 제안이 한국인 영어학습자들에게 영어 부정관사를 가르치는데 있어서 어떠한 교육적 함의를 지니는지를 제시한다.
