Effect of various fractions prepared from the methanol extract of Ixeris sonchifolia and flavonoids isolated from the extract on hypercholesterolemic mice were examined. When various fractions $(CHCl_3,\;Interphase,\;EtOAc,\;n-BuOH\;and\;H_2O)$were administered to mice, the Interphase material produced a significant activity. Total cholesterol level in the Interphase material-treated group given doses of 25 and 50mg was decreased significantly by as much as 16% and 30%, respectively. Among the isolated flavonoids, cynaroside caused a significant hypocholesterolemic activity.
한국산 초오속 식물의 생약학적 연구(제1보) : Aconitum triphyllum NAKAI에 관해서

Aconites distribute widely in northern hemispere of the earth reaching to arctic zone from warm and temperate one. Hitherto, these tuberous roots, Cho O, have been known to be famous plant poisons and essential important drugs possessing many remedial effects in each region of the world, especially in Korea and China. In Korea, although these plants grow widely in whole districts, their classifications are quite obscure. Especially, Aconitum triphyllum NAKAI is distributed whole districts. To clarify the botanical origin of Cho O, we studied on the anatomical characteristics of Aconitum triphyllum NAKAI growing wild in Korea. As a result, the environmental varieties of A. triphyllum NAKAI were recognized.

고들빼기의 부위별 메탄올 엑스가 고콜레스테롤 생쥐의 혈청 콜레스테롤농도에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 고콜레스테롤 생쥐는 식이에 1% 콜레스테롤과 0.5% 답즙산을 첨가하므로서 유도하였으며, 잎의 메탄올 엑스를 투여한 군은 대조군에 비해 혈청 콜레스테롤 농도를 현저히 감소시켰으나 뿌리의 경우에는 효과가 나타나지 않았다 . 또한, 잎의 메탄올 엑스는 고콜레스테롤 흰쥐에 대해서도 100㎎/㎏ 투여 용량에서 혈청 콜레스테롤 농도를 현저히 감소 시켰으며 동맥경화성 지표를 개선시켰다. 반면에, 정상흰쥐에 대해서는 효과가 나타나지 않았다. 이상과 같은 결과로 잎의 메탄올 엑스는 과잉의 콜레스테롤을 섭취하였을때 체내대사 이용도를 증가시키므로서 혈청 콜레스테롤 농도를 감소시킨다고 생각된다. The methanol extracts from different parts of Ixeris sonchifolia (Compositae) were evaluated for their total cholesterol lowering effect in mice. Mice were rendered hypercholesterolemic with 1% cholesterol and 0.5% cholic acid. Significant lowering in serum cholesterol was observed in mice with the methanol extract from leaves (MeOH-LF), whereas the methanol extract from roots (MeOH-RT) was devoid of this effect. In rats with cholesterol-induced hyperlipidemia MeOH-LF in a dose of 100㎎/㎏ body weight caused significant decrease of total cholesterol, and the atherogenic index was also improved. On the other hand, total cholesterol in rats fed a stock diet was not affected by administration of the MeOH-LF. Thus, it is suggested that this MeOH-LF probably may increase the metabolic utilization only when fed with excess cholesterol.

From the whole plants of Orostachys japonicus(Crassulaceae), fatty acid ester mixture, seco-A-triterpene mixture, glutinone, friedelin, b-amyrin, glutinol, epi fridelanol, 1-hexatriacontanol, sterol mixture, steryl glucoside mixture were isolated and characterized by spectral data.

The anti-mutagenic effect of Orostachys japonicus (0J) toward aflatoxin (AFB1) and N-methyl-N''-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) in the Salmonella assay system was studied. The methanol extract of OJ inhibited the mutagenicity induced by AFBI about 97% when 5% of the extract added to the system. Butanol fraction from the methanol extract was the most effective against AFB1. However, other fractions of hexane, chloroform, and ethylacetate also showed considerable antimutagenic activity against AFB1. Several identified compounds from the fractions of OJ exhibited anti-mutagenic effect. beta-Sitosterol, astragalin and kaempferol-3-rhamnosyl-7-glucoside were selected from the compounds, and these compounds inhibited the mutagenicity dose-dependently. These 3 compounds also decreased the mutagenicity induced by MNNG. From these results, it is suggested that the major compounds such as triterpene, sterol and flavonoid in the OJ were responsible for the inhibition of the AFB1 and MNNG-induced mutagenicities.

During aging, its chance of tissue damage by active oxygen species increases, which causes the abnormal aging as well as diseases like cancer. In biological system, there are enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase which scavenge active oxygen species as well as antioxidant agents such as ceruloplasmin, albumin and nonprotein-bound SH including glutathione related to defense mechanism. In this study, superoxide dismutase, catalase, serum albumin, protein-bound SH and nonprotein-bound SH levels were increased in SAM-R/1 mice treated with 2.5 or 5.0 ㎎/㎏ ginsenoside Rb₂. But malondialdehyde which is the product of lipid peroxidation was significantly decreased. These results suggest that increase of antioxidants by ginsenoside Rb₂ results in the protective effects against active oxygen species.

Phytochemical study on the aerial parts of Solanum lyratum (Solanaceae) was carried out. On the basis of phytochemical and spectroscopic evidences, compound I was identified as misctures of hexadecanoic acid methyl ester, 2,6,10,15-tetra methyl heptadecane, tricosane, tetracosane, pentacosane, docosanoic acid methyl ester, docosane, tricosanoic acid methyl ester, 8-hexyl pentadecane, tetracosanoic acid methyl ester, pentatriacontane, hexatriacontane, eicosane, hexacosane, hentriacontane and stigmasta-5,23-dien 3-β-o1, and compound II, III, IV and V were identified as hexacosanoic acid methyl ester, β-sitosterol-D-glucoside, 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1->2)-β-D-glucuronopyranosyl diosgenin and 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1->6)-β-D-glucopyranosyl quercetin (rutin), respectively. Rutin was identified as one of the active principles having antioxidative effect from S. lyratum.
