This study is to reflect the concepts and meanings of interpretive approach to research in the area of Korean physical education and sport. Currently the Korean research community of physical education and sport science are dominated by the positivist paradigm. As the consequence, newly emerging alternative research methods can not be accepted as academically appropriate ones. However, these alternative research approaches are getting the popularity and appealing to researchers to study socio-cultural meanings of physical education and sport in Korean society. It will be needed for the research community to understand assumptions and philosophical implications of these new research methodologies before to discuss the legitimacy of these approaches. As one of these alternative approach, interpretive approach emphasizes significance of language and meaning making process in human experience. Interpretive approach considers participants in sport and physical education as the subjective agent of producing meanings through their direct experience. Therefore researchers are asked to concentrate these participants' interpretations of their own experience. Open-ended interview or autobiographical narratives is employed as the main tool for data collection. These interpretive methods may be beneficial for Korean research community in PE and sport science to grasp emerging issues in the real world of Korean PE and sport.

Vol.15 No.-

The academic discourse of Korean physical education reveals that the academic community are heavily dominated by theoretical frameworks and languages of North American physical education. This was evidenced in a document that department of physical education. Seoul National University edited to review the development of Korean physical education in academian activities and its outcomes. The evolving process of contemporary Korean physical education is itself a process of introducing and interpretation of North American physical education, however the community's dependency on American frameworks are so problematic that majority of the academic activities and its outcomes are not much meaningful in the sense of the practice in the Korean society. There are several reasons for this problematic situation ; First, Korean academian in physical education and sport science assume that the universal form is North American concepts of research and theorization of physical education. Second, in most of the cases, elite research manpower was reinforced from those who has their academic training in the North American universities. Third, the positivistic-functional approach has been dominated in the Korean sports and physical education both in research and practice. There is an urgent demand to develop new perspectives and concepts that can explain and accommodate the reality of practice and culture of physical education and sports in today's Korean society. This paper includes some suggestions for the problematics.

Vol.9 No.1

There has been endless controversy regarding the concept of Mu-Sul, Mu-ye, Mu-Do in the Korean martial arts community. The main dispute has centered on the original meanings of each concept, and appropriate and genuine language to identify Korean martial arts, or martial arts activities in Korean society. Narratives in these controversy has two main themes. First, Most narratives are connected or at least related to nationalism, which are expressed by the terms of "genuine Korean" or Traditional". In this nationalistic viewpoint, the three concepts are understood as nationally rooted. For example, Mu-Do signifies the Japanese culture of martial arts practice, while Mu-Sul signifies the Chinese culture of martial arts practice. Following this logic, Mu-Ye in Korea signifies the concept for Korean practice of martial arts. The other theme is the sicentification of martial arts. Most martial artists who are associated with the academic community believe that martial arts should be theorized by scientific language. For them, the conceptual controversy is not significant. They rather prefer the concept of sports, or physical education. A critical question created by this scientific approach is whether to comprehend the authentic values and world view as they are embedded in Asian martial arts, or wether to dismantle them and reconstruct Asian martial arts as a sports. The author suggests an alternative framework to conceptualize martial arts in Korea. Korean martial arts community should forgo nationalistic position and also avoid overemhasizing the power of positivistic scientism. Instead, Korean martial arts professionals should expend their possessive notion of "stickly Korean" from to "East Asian". This expansion of perspective will give them much more flexbility to accommodate the concepts of "Mu-sul, Mu-Ye, Mu-Do". Then, these three concepts are no longer competitive but rather complementary. However, "Mu-Do" has the most comprehensive connotations and the proper term as the meta-language for the practice of martial arts in Korean society.

Vol.15 No.1

In spite of rapidly increasing security demand due to increasing, diversified, brutalized, widely committed and organized crimes caused by recent rapid urbanization, industrialization and information era trend of Korea, efficient prevention activities against crimes becoming tough and distrust on duty performance ability of the police is also increasing because of absolutely insufficient police manpower, budget and outdated obstacles. Therefore, civil security, crime prevention organization in civilian level, seems to play an important role in solving safety problems in people's life and satisfying various security demand of all levels of society caused by industrialization and urbanization. This study is significant in that it could be used as basic data to establish a base for the study and application of taekwondo as a guard martial art, and this study is aimed at examining the value and application plan of taekwondo and application methods of applied skills in case of accidental cases. The results of documentary researches to attain these goals are as follows. First, various training models could be established if lots of efforts in analytic researches on guard situations are made on the basis of spiritual aspect, historical background and established technique system of taekwondo. And as efforts to establish the system of taekwondo as a guard martial art, popularization through the system establishment of guard martial arts with existing taekwondo for a basis, the establishment of taekwondo educational programs as a guard martial art, voluntary efforts of taekwondo people, new thinking and efforts of university students majoring in taekwondo and investment based on field experiences of private and public guard agencies are required. Second, the answer for a question that which martial art is the strongest is meaningless when every martial art reached a stage of the best. But, we need to examine the value of taekwondo as a guard martial art by studying the system of guard martial arts on the basis of taekwondo which is more systematic and has proven its value at home and abroad. Also, the study on the value of taekwondo and its application are required to meet explosively increasing demand in the guard industry at home and abroad and to recreate taekwondo as a guard martial art for the manifestation of perfect guard capability. Third, as the application method of taekwondo in case of accidental cases, a safe distance should be kept so as clients not to be attacked, and in case of the failure in the security of safe distance, attack chances should be prevented by locating guards between clients and attackers. Also, when there are physical actions in attack, guards should block or defend them right after the actions, and when the attack of opponents is excessive, guards should gain supremacy perfectly over the opponents and eliminate the intention of attack so as clients' safety not be threatened anymore. For technical aspects to deal with these situations, physical training and mind training should be conducted for the direct aim of technical training and it is trained by classified techniques such as self-protection technique, practical technique and situation development technique, and as physical strength elements required for health maintenance and physical training, Poomse(formal exercises), kicking and Gyorugi are to be trained for instantaneous reactionary force and quickness.

Vol.19 No.2

Western theory of human movement has limitations in explaining Asian practice of physical activity culture. This study is to explore a possibility of Asian theory of movement and to understand the movement theory of Yin Yang. The Yin Yang theory is very simple but its influence has been extensive. The theory teaches that all things and events are products of two elements, forces, or principles. The key ideas of Yin Yang are contradistinction, conversibility, and inter-dependancy. There are various coupled concepts which derived from the ideas of Yin Ynag. Among them Key coupled concepts are 'softness & stiffness', 'inner-side & outer-side', 'dynamic & static', and 'emptiness & loaded'. With these coupled concepts the Asian theory of movement explains not only the external side of human movements but inner side of movements including power production, motor learning, and even body-mind issue. The Yin Yang theory of movement considers that the human movement is an internal constructive system or self regulatory system featured by the symmetry structure of human movement.

Vol.2 No.1

Asian martial artists have understood human movement based on the Asian traditional philosophical concepts, Tao, Taichi, yin and yang, softness and hardness, internal and external, etc., whereas Western approach is concentrated to the mechanical and physical principles on human movement. The study reviewed the concept of softness and hardness m relation to the traditional philosophic and its applications in martial arts. The traditional theories of softness and hardness were interpreted to understand their implications and meanings to practice of martial arts movements, particularly in the aspect of power production in the movements. The study revealed that; softness is a key to exert ultimate power in martial arts techniques, there are various types of power production in which the performer is not reached the level of understanding of softness. In the process of mastery of martial arts techniques, the practitioner is required to acquire the bodily understanding of softness in the given movement.

Vol.21 No.3

This study is to review the traditional concepts of poomsae and emerging discussions on the meaning of poomsae practice. The study is also to reinterpret the traditional concepts of poomsae and to extend the concept of poomsae in technical and practical context. The study surveyed diverse textbooks of taekwondo that have been valued as authentic and prestigious source books to analyze the traditional concepts of poomsae. The origins of poomsae was traced into three historical sources, fighting skills, hygienic exercise, and expressive performance like dance and demonstration. The characteristic features of poomsae movements of martial arts are depicted in the study as; stylistic formalization, composition with techniques, fixed arrangement of movements, incorporation of rhythm and movements, and process oriented performance. Those are proposed in the study as the key concepts of new poomsea practice; 1) Poomsae has three roots of origin; fighting, hygienic, and expressive roots and three values of martial art, health exercise, and expressive performance. 2) Poosae can be practiced with multiple purposes such as self-defense, exercise for health, basic training process for diverse martal arts including weapon techniques, and techniques of expressive performance. 3) Poomsae is not the only way of practicing techniques but a way of practicing techniques in martial arts. 4) The meaning and value of poomsae practice and gyorugi(sparring) practice can be distinguished from each other instead tied each other. So these two area of techniques can freed from the conceptual subjugation of traditional notion of poomsae.
