Metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma presenting as facial nerve palsy and facial pain

Facial nerve palsy due to temporal bone metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has rarely been reported. We experienced a rare case of temporal bone metastasis of HCC that initially presented as facial nerve palsy and was diagnosed by surgical biopsy. This patient also discovered for the first time that he had chronic hepatitis B and C infections due to this facial nerve palsy. Radiation therapy greatly relieved the facial pain and facial nerve palsy. This report suggests that hepatologists should consider metastatic HCC as a rare but possible cause of new-onset cranial neuropathy in patients with chronic viral hepatitis.

Hepatic fibrosis develops as a healing response but also causes many clinical problems that are associated with the progression of portal hypertension and liver failure. Recent basic and clinical evidences suggest that hepatic fibrosis is reversible and that even cirrhosis can be reversed. Removal of activated hepatic stellate cell (HSC) is regarded essential for this fibrosis reversal. Because apoptosis of activated HSCs can lead to the elimination of the main fibrogenic cells and increase the ECM degradation, induction of activated HSC apoptosis is an effective therapeutic method for targeting and removing activated HSCs. This article will highlight recent advances in the understanding of modulation strateges for HSC survival, especially focused on the methods for the apoptosis induction of HSCs.

Endoscopic intervention is a very important and effective tool for evaluating and treating an esophageal foreign body. The size of a cystic foreign body filled with liquid can be reduced by needle puncture and fluid spillage. We report a rare case of an acute total obstruction of the esophagus by an ingested canine gallbladder that was removed by endoscopic intervention. (Korean J Gastrointest Endosc 2007;34:143-145) 기저 질환이 없는 정상 성인에서 식도 이물은 드물며, 대부분 음식물에 의하여 우발적으로 발생한다. 개의 담낭을 섭취한 후에 식도 폐쇄가 발생한 예는 아직 보고된 바가 없다. 내시경은 식도 이물의 진단과 치료에서 매우 중요하고 효율적인 수단이나, 이물의 종류와 성격에 따라 적절한 내시경 치료법은 다를 수 있다. 저자들은 기저 질환이 없는 중년 남성에서 개의 담낭을 삼킨 직후에 발생한 식도 폐쇄를 내시경으로 이물의 크기를 줄인 후에 제거하였기에 보고한다.
Penrose tiling의 성질과 그 구성에 대한 연구

This paper is to introduce how to construct three types of Penrose tiling and properties of them. Penrose tiling which underlies many examples of medieval Islamic art is a prime example of aperiodic tiling of a plane. In this paper, we first reviewed the general concepts of tiling as tiling using regular polygons, transformations, symmetry, periodic tiling and non-periodic tiling. Second, we studied three types of Penrose tiling and matching rules for each of them and then, investigated the pattems arranged by matching rules. Third, we studied the deflation algorithm relying on the matching rule and some properties of Penrose tiling Besides, we showed how to draw the Penrose tiling using the java applet and winf 18.21.
WO₃계 NO_(x)센서의 검지 특성과 바인더 첨가 효과

The effects of various binderssuch as PVA, silica sol and alumina on the sensing characteristics of TiO_(2) (4 wt. %)-doped WO_(3)-based NO_(x). sensors were investigated. The sensor with PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) binder showed an improved sensitivity (R_(gas)/R_(air)- in NO_(x) 15 ppm = 375), response time and cross-sensitivity (selectivity) for interference gases (CO, SO_(2), CH_(4), C_(3)H_(8)). It could also be operated at a lower consumption power (about 1.6W at 180℃). The sensors with silica sol and alumina binders showed a decreased sensitivity (R_(gas)/R_(air) in NO_(x) 15 ppm = 63 and 31, respectively) for NO_(x) gas sensing, but they showed an improved cross-sensitivity, response and recovery time (1 -2 min. and 1 min., respectively) than the sensor fabricated without binder.

The sensing and electrical characteristics of WO₃-based n-type semiconductor gas sensors are investigated. In normal air condition, TiO₂(4 wt.%)-doped WO₃-based sensor fabricated without any binder shows the grain boundary (GB) potential barrier height of 0.26 V. Sensors fabricated with alumina, PVA and silica sol binders show 0.17, 0.22 and 0.26 V of GB potential barrier height, respective In the ambience of 120 ppm NO_x concentration, the GB potential barrier height of the sensor fabricated without binder is increased to 0.59. The sensors were fabricated with alumina, PVA, silica sol binders show 0.43. 0.66 and 0.52 V of potential barrier, respectively. Thus the variation of the potential barrier at GB is largest in the sensor fabricated with the PVA binder. This is found to be the main reason why the sensor fabricated with the PVA binder shows the best sensitivity. It is also found that the decrease of sensitivity at a temperature higher than the optimum operation temperature is due to the temperature dependence of the sensor resistance in normal air condition rather than the desorption of the adsorbed NO_x, gas particles. In the ambience of 250 ppm CO concentration, the GB potential barrier heights of the sensors fabricated without binder and with PA binder are about 0.2 V showing negligible change compared to the case of normal air ambience. This fact indicates that these sensors are good candidates for the selective detection of NO_x, gas in the mixture of CO and NO_x gases.
