Objective: The purpose of this study is to assess the clinical characteristics and the serial changes of high resolution CT (HRCT) findings and to correlate those with the results of clinical parameters in biopsy proven nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP) and usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) with connective tissue diseases (CTD). Methods: Retrospective analysis was made of forty patients with CTD diagnosed of NSIP and UIP from a single tertiary hospital between January 1996 and February 2006. Results: UIP was common in rheumatoid arthritis, systemic sclerosis and Sjogren`s syndrome, while NSIP was frequent in polymyositis/dermatomyositis. No significant difference was found in the clinical characteristics of patients with NSIP and UIP. In initial HRCT findings, extents of honeycombing and reticulation pattern were significantly more in UIP-CTD than in NSIP-CTD. In bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) results, proportion of alveolar macrophages was significantly higher in NSIP-CTD than in UIP-CTD. In NSIP-CTD, significant increment in the extent of reticulation and honeycombing was noted in the serial HRCT findings despite the aggressive treatment. Significant correlation was found between leukocytosis and honeycombing change in NSIP-CTD. Despite no significant difference of survival between two groups, patients with UIP-CTD seem to have a higher mortality than those with NSIP-CTD. Conclusion: It is suggested that chest HRCT and BAL fluid analysis may be helpful in the differential diagnosis of NSIP- and UIP-CTD and leukocytosis in initial blood test might be predictive of honeycombing progression in NSIP-CTD. Further study will be required to compare with the prognosis of NSIP- and UIP-CTD.

Intestinal pseudo-obstruction is an uncommon and poorly understood complication of systemic lupus erythematosus. It is characterized by acute or chronic symptoms suggestive of the obstruction of small or large intestine without any radiologic, surgical or endoscopic evidence of mechanical obstruction. Although the exact pathogenesis of intestinal pseudo-obstruction in SLE remains unknown, it can be caused by derangement of the visceral smooth muscle, enteric nerves or visceral autonomic nervous system. Concomitant involvement with dilatation of gastrointestinal and genitourinary tract highly suggests of intestinal pseudo-obstruction in systemic lupus erythematosus. There is an apparent association between lupus-related intestinal pseudo-obstruction and ureterohydronephrosis. The management of intestinal pseudo-obstruction consists of high dose corticosteroid, adequate nutrition, hydration and prokinetics. Early recognition of intestinal pseudo-obstruction in systemic lupus erythematosus and the use of adequate dose of corticosteroid are important. We report a case of systemic lupus erythematosus presenting as intestinal pseudo-obstruction.

본 논문의 목적은「타임」지가 1998년 6월 8일 선정한 20세기 모더니즘 최고 시인 엘리엇과 모더니즘 최고 소설가 조이스의 1915-1922년 사이의 관계를 전기 비평 관점에서 조명하는 것이다. 이 논문은 「T. S. 엘리엇의 서한집」1권 (2009), 「제임스 조이스의 서한집」 1권 (1957)과 3권 (1966), 파운드/조이스: 제임스 조이스에게 보낸 에즈라 파운드의 서한집 (1967)에 수록된 서신들 및 윈덤 루이스의 자서전 「작렬과 포격」(1937) 등에 나타난 1920년 엘리엇과 조이스의 프랑스 파리 조우 전후 8년 간 파운드의 중재, 엘리엇의 조이스 견해, 조이스의 엘리엇 언급 등을 집중적으로 탐색하고 있다. 아울러 조이스의 율리시즈 시리즈에 대한 리처드 알딩턴의 혹평, 엄격한 미국의 검열과 엘리엇의 옹호, 파리 소재 실비아 비치 소유인 셰익스피어 앤 컴퍼니에서 1922년 「율리시즈」 단행본의 힘든 출판 과정, 영국 서평들의 지연, 동년 「크라이티어리언」 창간호에 게재된 발레리 라르보의 서평 「율리시즈」및 엘리엇의 영역(英譯) 등을 심도 있게 천착하고 있다. 요컨대, 8년 기간에 걸쳐 엘리엇과 조이스와 파운드 등이 쓴 서한과 루이스의 엘리엇과 조이스의 관계 묘사는 그들의 친밀한 관계로부터 양면적인 관계를 거쳐서 협조적인 우정까지 강력한 영향력의 상호 작용을 집중적으로 시사하고 있다. The purpose of this paper is to explore, from the perspective of biographical criticism, the relationship between T. S. Eliot, the greatest modernist poet, and James Joyce, the greatest modernist novelist in the 20th century during the years 1915-1922. This paper is to thoroughly trace the mutual relationship or the influential interaction between Eliot and Joyce mainly through correspondence in The Letters of T. S. Eliot 1: 1898-1922 (2009), in Letters of James Joyce 1 & 3 (1957, 1966), in Pound/Joyce: The Letters of Ezra Pound to James Joyce with Pound’s Essays on Joyce (1967), and in Wyndham Lewis’s autobiography Blasting and Bombardiering (1937). Eliot’s views on Joyce and Joyce’s comments on Eliot before and after their first encounter through Pound’s mediation in Paris in 1920 are elaborated on. Richard Aldington’s severe critique on the series of Joyce’s Ulysses, strict American censorship and Eliot’s defence, difficult publication processes of Ulysses (1922) by Sylvia Beach’s Shakespeare and Company in Paris, the delayed British reviews, Valery Larbaud’s review “The ‘Ulysses’ of James Joyce,” and Eliot’s translation published in the first issue of The Criterion (1922) are also deeply investigated. In short, numerous letters of Eliot, Joyce, Pound, and Lewis’s description on the relationship between Eliot and Joyce over a period of eight years intensively reveal their influential interplay ranging from intimate relationship through ambivalent relationship to cooperative friendship.

This paper uses the textual approach to The Waste Land manuscript which T. S. Eliot produced during his three months' sick-leave in Margate and Lausanne. The letters exchanged between Eliot and Pound reveal that as a sage homme Ezra Pound performed his Caesarian Operation on The Waste Land manuscript including the typescript. Both Eliot's revision of and Pound's blue pencilling on The Waste Land manuscript reduced the poem to about half its original size, down to 433 lines, and added the fourth Phlebas section to its four structural sections. In addition, title names were changed from "He Do the Police in Different Voices" into "The Waste Land" and from "In the Cage" into "A Game of Chess." A close comparison of the 1971 edition of The Waste Land manuscript and the final 1961 edition of The Waste Land reveals the following deletions: the Fresca passage, the lengthy lines of "Death by Water," the satellite poems, etc., resulting in a masterpiece of modernism in the 20th century. In conclusion, the final edition of The Waste Land that evolved from the original The Waste Land manuscript is the culmination of the persistent and painstaking collaboration of Eliot, the Old Possum, and Pound, il miglior fabbro.

As a converted Anglo-Catholic, T. S. Eliot had earnestly yearned for the salvation of mankind from the waste land of corrupted European civilization with the conviction that “1f Christianity goes, the whole of our culture goes. The fruition of his deep meditation between the two W orld Wars brought f orth his masterpiece Four Quartets( 1943) -“Burnt Norton (1935) , “East Coker (1940), “The Dry Salvages (941), and “Little Gidding (1942). The two epigraphs in Greek Eliot quoted from Heraclitus fragments suggest unambiguously the theme of Four Quartets within the category of the Word (Logos). Not human time(Chronos) but divine time (Kairos), the Garden of Eden implicated as the rose garden, the Cross as an axle-tree, the Unmoved Mover (God the Father) or Incarnation as the still point are mentioned in detail in “Burnt Norton. In “East Coker Jesus Christ as a wounded surgeon, the Church as a dying nurse, and Adam as a ruined millionaire are symbolically depicted and the world is compared to an enormous hospital. Christ’s flesh and blood signifying the Eucharist are described as the only means of human re-demption. Annunciation as the perpetual angelus which transforms calamitous annunciations into eternal rebirth, intercession to the Virgin Mary for those who were and are in distress, and Incarnation half-guessed by men even through the revelatory grace are delineated in “The Dry Sal-vages. ln “Little Gidding, the Holy Spirit’s pentecostal fire, not purga-torial fire, in the form of a dove is dominant as the love of God. Sud-den glimpse of the Trinity, man’s inevitable sin and probable Atonement are also included. Harmonious reconciliation of the fire and the rose symbolizing supernatural divinity and natural humanity respectively will bring the hopeful salvation of human beings from this sinful world. ln conclusion, Eliot’s Four Quartets compri s all the Christian doc-trines, and therefore it may be called a magnificent poem of Christian thought.

성장과 발전 : 한국영미어문학회 역사 60년 회고

In commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the British and American Language and Literature Association of Korea (BALLAK), this paper is specially designed to explore the 60 years’ history of the society. The English Literary Society of Taegu was established on December 16, 1959, and the first volume of Taegu Review featuring four articles was issued in 1960. The fifth volume of Taegu Review composed of 11 articles was published in 1964 in honor of the 60th birthday of the late professor Wonam Lee Kyu Tong the first president of the society. The 34th volume appeared in 1983 for the celebration of the 60th birthday of the late professor Bongwun Kim Tae Han the president of the society. The BALLAK’s history might be divided into three phases: 1) the beginning period (1959-1972); 2) the growing period (1973-1995); 3) the developing period (1996-present). In the beginning period Taegu Review was published annually, in the growing period the journal was published biannually or triannually, and in the developing period it was published mostly quarterly and once bimonthly in 2013. The title of the English Literary Society of Taegu changed itself into the English Language and Literature Association of Taegu and Kyungpuk in 1992 and then finally into the British and American Language and Literature Association of Korea in 1996. In the meantime, the title of the journal Taegu Review was changed into Studies in British and American Language and Literature in 1996, when it began to develop from the regional journal towards the national one with the financial assistance from the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF). The 131th volume of Studies in British and American Language and Literature issued on December 31, 2018 boasts itself on the most numbered 22 articles in the publication history of the journal. I sincerely hope that the past 60 years’ history of the BALLAK firmly constructed upon the painstaking endeavors and incessant cooperative scholarship of our predecessors and contemporary scholars will surely illuminate the way to international conferences or journals for future generations of our society.

류마티스 섬유모세포양 활막세포에서 저산소증이 시토카인 생산에 미치는 영향

Objective: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by increased production of cytokines, proliferation of fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) and joint destruction. It is well known that the involved joints in RA are hypoxic. Hypoxia may play a role in the pathogenesis of RA. We thought that hypoxia might alter the production of cytokines by FLS and these changes could affect the biologic behaviors of FLS. Based on that, we investigated whether hypoxia affects the production of cytokines in FLS and the effect of these changes on matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) expression. Methods: Fibroblast-like synoviocytes from human rheumatoid synovial tissue obtained duringjoint replacement surgery were cultured in vitro. Hypoxic culture was performed by incubating cells in BBL(R) Gaspak pouch(TM) anaerobic system. After incubation under hypoxic condition for 24 hr, the concentrations of various cytokines in culture supernatants were determined by ELISA. To determine the effect of highly expressed cytokines on MMP expression, we performed ELISA of MMP-1, MMP-2 and MMP-3 in cultured FLS, after stimulation with respective cytokines. Results: In hypoxic state, IL-6, IL-8 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) concentrations were significantly increased compared to those in normoxic condition. However, there were little differences in IL-1, IL-2, IL-4, TNF-α and TGF-β. Stimulation of FLS with IL-6 and IL-8 showed the increased concentrations of MMP-1, MMP-2 and MMP-3. Conclusion: Hypoxic environment of rheumatoid synovium might affect FLS to produce proinflammatory and proangiogenic cytokine such as IL-6 and IL-8. These cytokines again could stimulate MMPs production in FLS leading to joint destruction.
