Species composition and seasonal variation of a shrimp assemblage in the coastal waters of Kori, Korea were studied based on the monthly trawled samples through a year of 1996. In the study period, 11 species of shrimps from 6 families were collected. Of these Crangon affinis predominated throughout the year. The peak abundances occurred in June and November, and low ones in winter and early autumn. More species were collected in winter and spring than summer and autumn. Species diversity indices showed that the shrimp assemblage was more diverse in winter than spring and autumn. Predominance of C. affinis in June, July and November caused high abundances and low diversity indices. The shrimps in the study area can be grouped into two groups on the basis of their occurrence patterns: resident species and seasonal species.

Line transect data from sighting surveys conducted in the East Sea, Korea in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006 were analysed to estimate densities and numbers of minke whale. The half-normal model was fit to the survey in 2000 and the uniform model was the most fitable to the survey in 2002 and 2006, and the surveys in 2003 and 2005 were fit by the hazard-rate model. The estimated density of minke whale in the survey in 2000 was estimated as 0.026 individuals/km2 (CV=0.409; 95% CI 0.011-0.065) and was higher than the survey in 2002 estimated as 0.018 individuals/km2 (CV=0.329; 95% CI: 0.009-0.034). The estimated density of minke whale in the survey in 2003 was estimated as 0.033 individuals/km2 (95% CI: 0.008-0.139) with the highest CV 0.760. The highest density was estimated in the survey in 2005 with 0.053 individuals/km2 (95% CI: 0.020-0.141). The Lowest CV (0.306) was estimated in the survey in 2006 with 0.025 individuals/km2 (95% CI: 0.014-0.046). A total of 500 bootstrap samples were generated within each stratum. Density, CV and 95% CI of each surveys were increased than analytic results except the survey in 2003. There were no increasing or decreasing annual trends in the density of minke whales observed during the study period. A long-term monitor and survey is needed to assess project minke whale abundance in the East Sea.

Seasonal variation of the crab community in the eelgrass (Zostera marina) bed in Kwangyang Bay was studied based on the monthly collections through a year of 1994. The crab community in the eelgrass bed was composed of 21 species representing 12 families. The community was dominated by Charybdis Japonica, Telmessus acutidens, Hemigrapsus penicillatus, and Pugettia quadridens. Crabs collected in the study area were primarily small-sized species or early juveniles of large crab species. Most individuals had carapace width smaller than 25 mm except C. japonica and T. acutidens which had maximum carapace width over 85 mm. More than 5 species were collected every month except January and February (4 and 3 species, respectively). The peak abundance occurred in August and low abundances in autumn and winter. Species diversity indices showed that more diverse crabs were collected In spring and summer, and lesser ones in autumn and winter. The crabs in the study area can be grouped into three groups on the basis of their occurrence patterns: resident species, seasonal species, and temporary species. More abundant and more diverse crabs were collected during nighttime than daytime.
Age and reproduction of the finless porpoises, Neophocaena asiaeorientalis, in the Yellow Sea, Korea
이영란,안용락,박겸준,손화선,안두해,김수암 한국통합생물학회 2013 Animal cells and systems Vol.17 No.5
A total of 116 finless porpoises, Neophocaena asiaeorientalis, were collected in the Yellow Sea off Korea. About 111 specimens were incidentally caught by stow nets on anchors from March to June 2010, and five were stranded in February 2011. Age was determined by counting dentinal growth layer groups (GLGs) in thin-sectioned teeth, and sexual maturity rating (SMR) was classified by investigating ovaries and testis macroscopically and microscopically. Immature females were ranged 1–4 years old and 92.6–141.2 cm in total body length (TBL), pubertal ones were all 5 years old and 125.4–136.0 cm, and mature ones ranged 5–19 years old and 131.6–155.2 cm. Age at attainment of sexual maturity of females was 4–5 years old. Parturition season estimated based on TBL of eight fetuses was from April to August with a peak in April to May. The first age at parturition was 5 years old. Among 62 males, immature males were 1–4 years old and 87.9–154.6 cm, pubertal ones were 3–5 years old and 121.5–134.5 cm, and mature ones were 4–19 years old and 125.3–229.0 cm. Males reached sexual maturity at 4–5 years old. Testicular mass and the diameters of seminiferous tubules were dramatically increased with SMR and regressed in testis of the individuals stranded in February. It suggested that male finless porpoises have aspermatogenic period between October and February. It is presumed that the breeding season would be May–September with a peak in May–June.

The species composition and seasonal variation of fish assemblage in the coastal water off Gadeok-do, Korea were studied using the monthly trawled samlpes through a year of 1998. During the study period, 110 species of fishes from 57 families were collected. Repomucenus valenciennei, Thryssa kammalensis, Leiognathus nuchalis and Zoarces gilli dominated the fish assemblage throughout the year, and were responsible for $ 57.6{\%}$ and $37.2{\%}$ in the number of individuals and biomass, respectively. Fish species of secondary importance in abundance were Sillago japonica, Apogon lineatus, Pholis fangi, Engraulis japonicus, Thryssa adelae, Pho;is nebulosa, Conger myriaster, Liparis tanakai, Acentrogobius pflaumii, Limanda yokohamae, Chaeturichthys hexanema, Erisphex pottii and Cunoglossus abbreviatus. Higher numbers of species were collected in spring and autumn than in summer and winter. Abundance was high in spring and autumn, and low in summer and winter, Species diversity indices showed that the fish assemblage was more diverse in autumn than any other seasons.

Identification of individuals is a standard tool used to study animal behavior and ecology. Numerous studies based on photographic identifications of various marine mammal populations have been successfully conducted. The objective of this study was to validate a photo-identification method for spotted seals. We tested the method using 4,939 photographs gathered in 30 field surveys from 2006 to 2008 on Baekryongdo, Korea. In 2006, 20 individuals were identified and cataloged using unique spot patterns on their left chick pelages as a natural marker. In 2007 and 2008, three and nine individuals, respectively, were recaptured, with six individuals continually recaptured during the entire survey period. We confirmed that the spot patterns of spotted seal pelages were constant in shape and location throughout time. These characteristics offered an opportunity to consistently identify individuals within a population over the long survey period. The use of photo-identification has great potential for mark-recapture studies.
