      • ‘English Only Zone 영어’에 관한 연구

        It is getting more important that students in Korea develop the ability to make themselves understood in English instead of getting some theoretical background. So Gyeongsang National University ended up developing a unique program in 2005, the English Only Zone Program(EZ program), which can be applied for by freshmen students who are interested in learning English. The focus of the program is on lectures at the English Only Zone building by a native speaker. Students must also live at the English Dormitory. The English Only Zone, where all of the students must use only English, includes the English building and the English Dormitory. If a student violates the English only policy, he/she will be given 1 penalty point. It is subtracted from the total scores he/she will get at the end of the semester. The Korean Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development recognizes that the EZ Program is the most successful English program in Korea. A lot of universities have visited the EZ to learn how it operates. So our aim is to study the EZ program in respect of its operation, curriculum, teachers, and facilities to ensure that it continues to be a progressive program.

        한국 호텔의 부정평가에 대한 응답 장르분석

        This study investigates the issue of how top hotels in Seoul respond to customers’complaints in website by exploring their responses to negative reviews through genre analysis for the purpose of making contribution to hotels and English teaching. The purposes of this study are to identify (1) moves’proper application to the selected texts in comparison with Thumvichit & Gampper(2019) move structure, (2) moves and steps of RNRs and their occurrence frequency by covering a communicative function, and (3) the correlation between moves/steps and formulaic sequences(4-gram clusters) of RNRs and to help English for Specific Purposes writing class. The results showed that (1) the types and the order of application of the move applied in the RNR text were classified into six types, (2) moves/steps were categorized into obligatory, conventional, and optional ones according to the frequency, and (3) there was also a significant difference in the recurrent word combination and frequency of each move/step.

        영어학 학술연구논문 영문초록의 무브와 언어적 특성 분석

        In recent years, the study of English abstracts has drawn the attention of many researchers. However, research on the linguistic characteristics of moves in research article abstracts within the English linguistics discipline has been relatively scarce in Korea compared to other academic disciplines. English abstracts typically employ various moves to present information on the introduction, purpose, method, results, and conclusion of the study in order to promote it. This paper aims to explore the differences in linguistic features between moves in English abstracts written by native writers and non-native writers by analyzing a sample of 50 abstracts from each group. The study reveals significant differences in linguistic fundamentals such as statistical measures, word lists, Nation’s word list (2012), verb tense, and keywords between the moves of the two groups. These findings can assist academic writers in mastering the conventions of academic writing in the English linguistics discipline. (Gyeongsang National University)

        박사학위논문의 ‘감사의 글’에 나타난 원어민과 비원어민(한국인) 텍스트 비교분석

        Though acknowledgements have been neglected in writing dissertations by Korean master and doctoral students, they are obligatory by native speakers. The purpose of this study was to investigate a contrastive study of doctoral dissertation acknowledgements by English native speakers, non-native speakers (Korean) who studied in USA and non-native speakers(Korean) who studied in Korea. To this end, the same number of acknowledgements were selected. The model used in this study was Hyland(2004) model. The results showed that there are some significant differences in the length of the text, rhetorical moves, frequency of occurrence, individuals acknowledged, etc. More important was to find a new move which native speakers do not use in acknowledgements from Korean writers.

        영어전공학생들의 영어학원 취업과 창업에 관한 연구

        The purpose of this paper is to investigate the situation of a private English institute, to compare the curricula of three English departments at industrial universities and investigate the possibility of English department graduates opening English institutes. It is revealed that 1) the curriculum of J English department is not appropriate for that of an industrial university since it is not planned to teach industry-centered subjects, 2) the subjects such as English conversation, English reading, TOEIC class, English writing, and English grammar are helpful in their teaching; however, some subjects such as tourism related class, computers and English literature are not 3) few English instructors are satisfied with their work at institutes, but the higher English ability they have, the more satisfied they are at work and the more hopeful they are about founding an institute in the future. This paper proposes that a curriculum of English department of industrial university should be changed in order to meet the needs of prospective English institute teacher.         비교광고(Comparative Advertisements)에서 나타나는 아이러니의 사용과 구현, 그리고 적합성

        본 논문은 화용론적 접근(즉 적합성이론)을 통해 상업광고의 한 유형인 비교광고에서 나타나는 냉소적 아이러니의 사용과 구현 양상을 규명하는 것을 그 목적으로 한다. Lagerwerf(2007: 1708)는 “긍정적 프레임 속에서 등장하여 부정적인 의미전달로 종결되는 냉소적 아이러니는 최종적인 의미가 반드시 긍정적인 것이어야만 하는 상업광고에서는 사용될 수 없다”고 주장하지만, 사실 이것은 상업광고의 일종인 비교광고의 화맥에서는 종종 사용되기도 하며, 오히려 광고주의 동일한 메시지를 축어적 발화로 소비자들에게 전달할 때보다 그들의 주의를 더 강하게 집중시키고, 그것이 더 오래도록 그들의 뇌리에 남아있게 만든다는 점에서 그 인지적 효과가 더 크다. 아이러니의 언어적 본질과 관련하여 적합성이론은 Grice(1975)의 ‘질의 격률’에 바탕을 둔 접근을 거부하고 ‘메아리적 언급 + 거부 또는 일탈’이라는 대안적 설명 논리를 제시한다. 그런데 이것은 여러 가지의 대화격률들을 동원하지 않고 ‘적합성원리’라는 하나의 설명논리로 모든 종류의 발화들을 설명하는 것이기에 설명적 경제성 추구를 가능하게 한다. 이와 관련하여 본 논문은 비교광고 속에 나타나는 냉소적 아이러니의 사용/구현 양상을 적합성이론의 접근을 통해 설명함으로써 그것이 추구하는 (최소한의 설명논리로써 다양한 현상들을 일관되게 설명하기 위한) 이론적 일반화와 예측가능성의 신뢰성을 강화하는데 기여하고자 한다. The goal of this paper is to make a pragmatic account of irony; particularly sarcastic irony used and realised in comparative advertisements as a type of commercial ones, from a relevance-theoretic point of view. According to Lagerwerf, sarcastic irony cannot be used in commercial advertisements because its purpose is negative, while they should show the positive informational intention to persuade consumers to purchase the advertiser’s products or services. However, sarcastic irony can often be used in the context of comparative advertising; rather, it has a greater cognitive effect than delivering the same message from the advertiser to consumers in a literal utterance. In relation to the linguistic nature of irony, RT proposes an alternative pragmatic account of irony, which is based on the notion of ‘echoic mentioning + rejection or dissociation’, instead of Grice’s ‘Maxim of Quality’. This pursues an explanatory economy in that RT explains all types of utterance by a single principle of ‘relevance’, without employing various conversational maxims given by Grice. In addition, by examining the linguistic nature of sarcastic irony used and realised in comparative advertisements within a relevance-theoretic framework, this paper aims to make a contribution to strengthening the credibility of theoretical generalization and predictability of RT, which seek explaining various phenomena by the minimal explanatory logic (i.e, a single principle of relevance).
