Clinical variants of Guillain-Barré syndrome in children

Guillain-Barre´ syndrome (GBS) is an acute inflam- matory demyelinating polyneuropathy most common- ly characterized by rapidly progressive, essentially symmetric weakness and areflexia. This study exam- ined clinical symptoms of clinical variants of GBS through a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) study, nerve con- duction (NCV) study, treatment, and prognosis. There were 16 children with GBS who visited our hospital from January 2011 to December 2013. Guillen-Barre´- like syndromes with transient synovitis were noted in three children. Clinical variants of GBS with acute demyelinating encephalomyelitis were observed in one child. Previous infections were noted in 16 children with Guillen-Barre´-like syndrome. There were as- cending infections in 16 cases. Fifteen children showed symmetric infections, and one showed asymmetric infection. In NCV, slow waves were noted in two cases. We treated using intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) in four cases, IVIG with steroid in two, cases and sup- portive care in 10 (62.5%) cases. Five children treated with IVIG and 10 with supportive care management were completely improved.Our study suggests that supportive care is effective as a treatment for clinical variants of GBS. Further study is necessary for more patients.

최근 자동차 램프 디자인은 조명 기술의 발달로 디자인 자유도가 높아졌다. 기능 중심의 과거 램프디자인과 다르게 구조적인 크기의 다양성이 가능해지면서 조형적으로 가늘고 슬림한 스타일이 유행이다. 헤드램프의 슬림화는 그 회사의 기술력을 보여주는 수단이 되었다. 기술력이 뒷받침되지 않으면 램프 슬림화는 불가능하기 때문이다. 램프를 컴팩트하게 만들어 무게는 줄이고 연비는 높이는 친환경기술과 적은 전력으로 고휘도의 빛을 내는 효율성을 고려한 기술이 조합된 슬림화는 자동차 회사들이 추구하는 방향이 되었다. 또한 소비자들도 헤드램프의 형태가 아닌 디테일에서 만들어지는 캐릭터에 관심을 갖게 되면서 슬림화추세는 계속 이어질 것으로 보인다. 하지만 트렌드를 따라 아이덴티티를 무시하고 무조건적으로 슬림하게 디자인할 수 없다. 아이덴티티는 회사가 쌓아온 그 회사만의 이미지이기 때문이다. 본 연구는 제품, 건축, 의상 등 타 디자인 산업에서 사용하는 시각적 슬림화의 사례를 분석하고 일반화한다. 그 결과 도출된 조형원리 즉, 대비, 착시, 통일성을 이용한 세 가지 측면에서 아이덴티티를 계승하면서 헤드램프를 슬림하게 보이는 방법. 즉, 시각적 슬림화의 방법을 제시한다. With the recent advancing of the lighting technology, designing vehicle’s headlights enjoys unprecedented liberty. Unlike the past’s designs of headlights centered solely upon functions over styles, their recent designs diversified in structural dimensions makes a popular trend for narrow and slim styles in forms. As a matter of fact, slimming headlights has become a standard that shows the company’s level of technology, because, without the appropriate technologies backing up, developing slim headlights is impossible. It has become every car manufacturers’ common goal to develop environment-friendly technology which reduces their cars’ weight and improves the gas mileage by making compact headlights, and slimming technology which is a combination of related sub-technologies involved around effective illumination in high brightness with low energy consumption. Consumers’ recent interests in details of headlights, not in their shapes, makes the slimming trend a continuable movement. However, when designing headlights, it is not an option to ignore each brand’s identity in the effort of slimming them, because, to car companies, identity means their own image. This research has focus on analyzing and generalizing cases of visual slimming strategies utilized in design industries such as product industry, architectural industry, or fashion industry. The resulting formative principle: a strategy of succeeding the brand’s identity, and, at the same time, slimming headlight designs in three aspects, contrast, visual illusion, and unity. In other words, headlights’ visual slimming techniques will be introduced.
