Study of Reversible Curvature Inversion of Liquid Crystal Elastomer Single Film

Multi-curvature transformation of a surface is an one of highly required functions to present complex shape as well as flexibility in locomotion for soft actuator. Here, we have demonstrated a one pot approach to fabricate a single film of liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) presenting reversible curvature transformation inversion with thermo-stimulus. Photo-crosslinking of reactive mixture including non-reactive mesogens provide a formation of A liquid crystal director is programmed on single film and a method capable of inducing a crosslinking density gradient through the thickness of LCE film. Because of the density gradient, the film shows intrinsic curvature that is deformed towards less dense part after extraction of the non-reactive mesogens. The results highlight the formation of density gradient is an easy but effective strategy to prepare single film that is capable of reversibly transforming in multi-shapes

For the magnetron, gyrotron and electron beam welder, which is the applications of the technology applying high voltage to thermal electrons, the power supply is required to heat filament for emission of thermal electrons. This paper describes the design of filament power supply, whose maximum output voltage is 17 V and maximum output current is 10 A based on the series resonant converter(SRC) operating in discontinuous conduction mode(DCM). The design and operating characteristics were verified by the PSPICE simulation and experimental results with resistor load. Also experimental results with a simulated load, which simulates characteristic of filament load whose impedance increases with increasing temperature, confirmed characteristics of the current source that has a constant output current on the fluctuated load condition.
Curvature Reversal of Monolithic Liquid Crystal Elastomer Film for Smart Sorting Valve Application

Multi-directional actuation by a single stimulus is highly required in applications such as sensors, actuators and soft robotics. Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are one of the most promising candidates for the soft-actuator due to their capability of stimuli-responsive shape morphing, that is able to be controlled with local orientation of LC mesogens. Here, we report an effective approach to the multi-directional curvature reversal by a single stimulus, heat, using monolithic Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs). The curvature reversal of the LCE actuator exhibits highly reversible and fast actuation by heating and cooling, allowing new concept of a practical application: a self-regulated smart valve that is capable of qualitatively sorting liquids by temperature.
