EPIK Teachers’ Beliefs About Language Learning and Teaching Processes

The present study investigated newly recruited native speaking teachers of the English Program in Korea (EPIK) with a focus on thei r individual characteristics, their perceptions on second language (L2) learning and teaching processes, and their teaching experience as a variable (novice vs. expert) in their understanding of language learning and teaching processes. A questionnaire was g iven to 244 EPIK teachers. Analysis of the self reported data revealed that EPIK teachers were mostly in their 20s who were recruited from six inner circle countries with teaching certificates. Results also demonstrated the importance of a teacher’s teac hi ng experience, where subsequent mean difference models of novice and expert teachers revealed significant differences in their understanding of L2 learning and teaching p rocesses. Findings showed that teachers with experience had beliefs aligned with the b est teaching practices. These findings open discussions about the necessity of adequate subsequent support for native speaking teachers teachers.

대학생의 전자책 구독 서비스 이용 실태 및 사용성 평가

본 연구는 전자책 이용률이 높은 디지털 네이티브 세대인 20대를 대상으로 전자책 구독서비스에 대한 인식을 파악하고자 하였다. 설문조사와 사용성 평가(usability testing)를 병행한 혼합연구 방법을 통해 전자책 이용률이 높은 20대 대학생의 전자책 구독 서비스이용 실태 및 서비스에 대한 인식을 조사하였다. 설문조사를 통해 국내 대학생 202명의 의견을 수집하였고, 전자책 비이용자와 이용자를 구분하여 분석하였다. 설문 결과, 비이용자와 이용자 간의 전자책에 인식의 차이가 나타났으며, 휴대성 및 편의성은 두 연구 참여자 그룹에게 공통적으로 나타나는 전자책의 장점으로 조사되었다. 사용성 평가에서 사용된 ‘밀리의 서재’ 애플리케이션은 가장 대중적인 전자책 플랫폼으로 해당 서비스를 활용하여 전자책 이용 경험이 없는 20대 대학생 10명을 대상으로 평가가 진행되었다. 실험 결과, 연구 참여자들은 전자책의 편의성, 디자인, 다양한 부가 기능, 가성비 등에 대해 긍정적인 반응을 보인 반면, 흥미 부족, 기능 실용성, 터치 오류 및 오작동, 장서 부족, 시스템 문제에 대해서는 부정적인 의견을 나타냈다. The purpose of this study was to assess the perception of e-book subscription services among the digitally native generation in their twenties, who have a high e-book usage rate. This study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining survey responses and usability testing. It aimed to assess the awareness and usage of e-book subscription services among university students in their twenties, a demographic known for their high utilization of electronic devices and e-books. The survey was conducted among 202 university students, and the responses were categorized and examined based on whether they were users or non-users. As a result of the survey, I found there is different awareness of e-book between users and non-users, on the other hand, convenience and portability are the strong point of e-books for users and non-users commonly also. Usability testing was performed on a group of 10 university students in their twenties who had not previously used the ‘Millies Library’ application, which is renowned as the most widely-used e-book platform. Following the experiment, participants expressed positive feedback regarding various optional features, convenience, design, and cost-effectiveness. However, they also had negative reactions concerning touch errors, malfunctions, functional practicality, a lack of interest, system issues, and the absence of a library.

『어둠 경작하기』: 2인칭 서사를 통한 가상현실 체험

Despite the traditional book form, Richard Powers’s Plowing the Dark uses second-person narration to demonstrate an intriguing case of novelistic remediation of digital media by appropriating the latter’s aesthetic effects and compositional techniques to revitalize the novel form. Similar to Marie-Laure Ryan’s argument, this novel exemplifies narrative, print or hypertext, as virtual reality with the union of immersion and interactivity in which readers can create a palpable three-dimensional space through the act of reading. It is a novelistic rendition of digital virtual reality in print. The second-person narration maximizes the reader’s experience of immersion in the text, recalling the narrative voice and mood in early text-based computer games such as Colossal Cave Adventure. The story of Adie Klarpol, a Seattle designer participating in the creation of a virtual reality machine called the Cavern, directly connects to the contemporary development of virtual reality technology, in reference to the University of Illinois’s CAVE project. In another narrative of Taimur Martin, a hostage held by Lebanese terrorists, the second-person narration offers the reader an intensive VR experience of immersion into the text. The position of the reader-addressee in Taimur’s second-person narration reminds us of the role of a user-player in hypertext and interactive fiction, summoned to interact with the story world. Despite the limitations imposed by the book form on the degree and nature of the reader’s interaction with the text, through the second-person narration and the embedded narrative frames, Powers suggests that literature and art in general provide the audience a VR experience of dwelling in a time-space of verisimilitude. Powers’s experiments demonstrate that the reader of print narratives can play an active role in the immersive story world.

노인 대상 영양교육이 식생활지식, 태도 및 행동에 미치는 효과

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of nutrition education on dietary knowledge, dietary attitudes, and dietary behavior of elderly by analyzing changes before and after nutrition education. This study was conducted in Seoul from March 2022 to December 2022 for 50 elderly (6 male, 44 female) who participated in nutrition education for 8 weeks at three senior welfare centers (Seodaemun, Seongbuk, Jongno). A total of 35 responses were used in the final analysis. Statistical analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics, paired t-test, and Wilcoxon’s signed rank test by age, hypertension, and dislipidemia to find effect of nutrition education on their nutritional knowledge, dietary attitudes, and dietary behavior. Results showed that nutrition education had a significant effect on the elderly. In particular, for those with chronic diseases such as hypertension and dislipidemia, the difference after education was significant, indicating significant changes in dietary habits. This study is expected to provide basic data for the development of a systematic nutrition education program for the elderly in the future.

매트릭스 시스템에 따른 유구치 인접면 수복물에 대한 3D 스캐너를 이용한 형태학적 평가: 실험실적 연구

이 연구의 목적은 유구치를 재현한 인공치를 대상으로 인접면 복합레진 수복 시 매트릭스 시스템에 따른 인접면의 외형, 접촉면의 크기 및 수복 전과 후의 부피 차이를 비교해 보는 것이다. 네 가지 종류의 인공치에 Circumferential 매트릭스 시스템에 해당하는 Tofflemire Matrix System과 Sectional 매트릭스 시스템에 해당하는 Palodent V3 Sectional Matrix System, myJunior Kit를 이용하여 복합레진을 수복하고 3D 모델링 과정을 거쳐 분석되었다. Sectional 매트릭스 시스템을 사용한 경우에서 오목한 인접면 외형이 형성될 확률이 높았으며 더 큰 접촉 면적과 부피가 형성되었다. 이는 Sectional 매트릭스 시스템에 사용되는 매트릭스 밴드의 완전 연질(Dead soft) 특성에 의한 변형으로 인해접촉점 주변으로 과량의 레진이 적용될 수 있기 때문이다. 게다가 Sectional 매트릭스 시스템에 포함된 고무 웨지가 매트릭스 밴드를 와동에 잘 적합 시키지 못할 가능성이 있다. 따라서 이번 연구의 결과를 바탕으로 유구치 인접면을 Sectional 매트릭스 시스템을 이용해 복합레진 수복하는 경우, 형태학적 관점을 고려한 신중한 사용이 요구된다. The purpose of this study was to compare the proximal surface contour, size of contact area, and volume difference before and after restoration in artificial teeth of primary molars during proximal composite resin restoration using different matrix systems. Four types of artificial teeth were restored with composite resin using sectional matrix systems-Palodent V3 Sectional Matrix System and myJunior Kitand a circumferential matrix system-Tofflemire Matrix System-and modeled threedimensionally for analysis. When sectional matrix systems were used, there was a higher probability of concave proximal surface contour and simultaneously greater contact area and volume. This is attributed to the dead soft properties of the matrix band used in sectional matrix systems, which can lead to deformation of the band and hence an excessive amount of resin applied around the contact point. Additionally, the rubber wedge in the sectional matrix system may not help the matrix band fit into the cavity. Therefore, based on the findings of this study, morphological aspects need to be carefully considered for proximal composite resin restoration of primary molars using sectional matrix systems.

코맥 맥카시의 『로드』: 언어와 기억하기를 통한 구원

In the absence of a universal religious system, the quest for religious meaning remains a central theme in the works of some American novelists such as Cormac McCarthy. This essay examines McCarthy’s exploration of the possibility of redemption in his post-apocalyptic novel, The Road. The unnamed father’s selfless devotion to his son, a messianic figure, illustrates the Christian virtues of hope, faith, and charity as described in the Bible. In contrast to the mother’s despair and Ely’s nihilism, the father’s belief in his son’s sacredness and his ritualistic care of the boy are excellent examples of the aforementioned Christian virtues through which individual redemption may be possible. However, The Road is not a traditional narrative of redemption because it does not end with the man’s triumphant transcendence of death or the world’s regeneration after violence and destruction. Instead, the novel’s last paragraph depicts brook trout, a symbol of sacredness. McCarthy suggests that language has the power to recover the lost world and redeem life by evoking memories of things past. The Road is a modern narrative of secular redemption that assimilates the possibility of experiencing spiritual transcendence within the power of language and remembrance.

An Examination of Research on the Effectiveness of Corrective Feedback in Second Language Writing

An ongoing debate in the second language acquisition literature is whether written corrective feedback improves second language learners’ ability to write accurately. This debate has been primarily fueled by two opposing views on the value of correction in writing, namely Truscott (1996, 1999, 2007) and Ferris (1999, 2004). To date, the empirical findings on the effectiveness of written corrective feedback have been mixed; conclusive answers are not yet available. In order to examine the effectiveness of written corrective feedback, this paper performs a critical synthesis of feedback studies in terms of their research design, measurement, and data analysis. The paper argues that the conflicting results of these studies can be attributed to methodological inconsistencies in how corrective feedback is administered in second language writing studies.

조선시대 지방 단유(壇壝)건축 신실(神室)의 유형과 변화

Altar architecture is a kind of sacrificial building, mainly formed in altar. Central architecture of Altar architecture is relatively simple. However, various attached building are necessary for worship. Among them, Sinsil which is a place to seal a God’s tablet, is very important. The central government of the Joseon Dynasty attempted to define the local sacrificial system and make it customary as a way to strengthen the centralization based on Confucianism. Nonetheless, the altar architecture of the province without detailed regulations, were managed and underwent repairs according to the political situation of the state and local circumstances. Sinsil, which is an important component of the altar architecture, best reflects this situation. Therefore, it was possible to grasp the situation of the altar architecture of the province in the Joseon Dynasty by analyzing the Sinsil through various documents. As a result of analysis, it was divided into six types. In addition, It is also found that there are temporal relation between these six types. 단유건축은 단을 쌓아 제사를 지내는 건물 유형으로, 제사의 행위가 일어나는 중심 건축은 비교적 간단하다. 하지만 제사를 지내기 위해서는 여러 가지 부속 공간이 필요하다. 그중에서 신실은 제사의 대상인 신위를 봉안해 두는 기능을 하는 곳으로 단연 부속 건축 중에 중요한 지위를 지닌다. 조선시대 중앙 정부는 유교에 기반을 둔 중앙집권을 강화하는 한 방편으로 지방의 제사 제도를 규정하고 이를 관례화하기 위해 노력했다. 그럼에도 지방의 단유 제사건축은 구체적인 세세한 규정이 없어, 국가의 정치적 상황과 지방의 사정에 따라 수리와 정치(整治)를 겪었다. 단유건축의 중요한 구성 요소인 신실은 이러한 상황을 가장 잘 반영하는 부속 건축의 하나로, 다른 부속 건물에 비해 관련 문헌 내용이 많이 남아 있다. 따라서 여러 문헌 자료를 통해 신실을 전반적으로 분석함으로써 조선시대 지방 단유건축의 상황을 파악할 수 있다. 분석 결과, 조선시대 단유건축 신실은 6가지 유형으로 나눌 수 있다. 또한, 이 6가지 유형들 간에는 어느 정도 시기적인 전후 관계를 따져볼 수 있었는데, 세 단유의 신실이 제대로 갖추어지지 못하는 상황에서 각 단에 따로 갖추는 경향으로 변화하였다. 이에 덧붙어 조선후기에는 지방에 따라 성황과 여제단의 긴밀한 관계로 두 단을 같은 곳이나 근처에 두고, 두 제사의 신위를 함께 봉안하는 경우도 나타났다.
