Since there were few musical critics in 1930s, Kim Guan proposed the reexamination of "the national music." During this era, there were no support or exchanging of views from his fellow musical critics toward his proposal. Many believed that because of the closely monitored Japanese imperialism, they were intimidated to express their points of views and support for Kim's, "the national music." Besides of being suppressed, many found that Kim's opinion were very ahead of time or very futuristic and therefore, it didn't get the importance of its issues. After the independence from Japan, there were bursts of discussions about his proposal as like the darn water exploded. Many people including the musical critics were able to express their views towards the proposal. They could sing for joy during the independence. In 1980s, the systematic written exposition or argument about Korean music could point out and discussed the problems of the western music influences. However, during the occupation of the Japanese, there was one musical critic who gave his valuable opinion on "the national music" --- Kim Guan. Even though there was no freedom, there was advancement and it led the Korean music where it is today.

Dong-Hyeok Lim is a composer who accomplished the outstanding feat of winning National Japanese Music Competition for three years in a row from 1938. Moreover, though he didn't work for a long time as a music critic, his criticism leaves very meaningful impression to many people. He requested music criticism based on musicians' professional music knowledge towards music critic world at the time. Also he reproached the erroneous criticism culture in those days. One significant fact in his criticism is his remark as a composer. He indicates that the composers at the time lack basic knowledge and training of music. He requires the composers to comprehend the basics of music and to discover the aesthetic principles. He asserts strongly about modern music that they should not be satisfied with music in the past, rather they should excel the music of the past. These criticisms are still effective today when people deal with classical and romantic music for their mainstream repertoire. I hope the study about his works will continue by starting off this research focusing on music criticism of Dong-Hyeok Lim.
