This paper attempts to examine the place of translation, especially from English into the vernacular, in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) with particular reference to Korean vernacular-medium secondary schools and universities. The problem of the use of translation and the mother tongue has long been a controversial issue. The paper discusses the following matters: (1) the multiple meanings of translation (2) many different ways of conveying the meaning of target language lixical items (3) the arguments for and against the use of the mother tongue in the classroom (4) a realistic solution to the problem of the exclusive use of translation prevalent in Korea: a doctrine of compromise between translation and direct method (5) the chief drawbacks of the wide and almost exclusive use of translation and some suggestions of effective classroom activities for restricting translation. Translation is by no means the goal in TEFL, nor should it serve even as chief aid. We must acknowledge, however, that translation is inevitable and a skill in its own right, and that judicious use of translation may prove effective in TEFL. Active language practice so far neglected should by all means be incorporated in our grammar-translation oriented TEFL classroom.

This paper attempts to draw up a list of structural patterns to be recognized for accurate decoding in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Reading on the intermediate-advanced level. There is no such systematically established list except Paulston and Bruder's. Paulston and Bruder's list of grammatical patterns to be taught for passive recognition in EFL Reading is criticized and a new list of patterns is suggested in the present paper. These structural patterns in my list are identified, as being important to Korean students for recognition in college English reading, on the basis of my analysis of reading materials contained in English for Proficiency by Spencer and of my own classroom experience. The headings of my list are as follows: 1. Anticipatory It Construction 2. Connection 3. Substitution and Reference 4. Infinitive 5. Participial Construction 6. Postmodification 7. Apposition 8. This paper aims at providing the English as a Foreign Language Learner with a guide material for one of the most intricate aspects in English grammar, namely, the Verb-Particle Combination. The structure, where a verb and a particle work closely together to express a(n) (idiomatic) meaning, seems unpredictable and patternless. Relating to the VPC, the paper examines the terms, the syntactic properties, and the types of classifications. The paper proposes a classification of the VPC desirably applicable to teaching and learning EFL classroom: Intransitive Phrasal, Prepositional, Transitive Phrasal, and Phrasal-Prepositional Verb, as suggested in A Concise Grammar of Contemporary English and The Key to English Two-word Verbs.
