Nutrient Compounds are becoming increasingly important in wastewater management, because of the many effects that nutrient materials can have on the environment. The study is to increase the efficiency of nutrient removal leading natural zeolite. Ammonia nitrogen exchange capacity of natural zeolite was examined. Exchange capacity of zeolite decreased with an incresing particle size of zeolite. Ion exchange capacity of the 10 X 14 mesh particles was 7.4~28.6 percent higher than that of the 4 X 10 mesh particles. Exchange of ammomium ion was slightly reduced under the presence of organics such as acetate and glucose. It is believed that pretreatment of influent using natural zeolite is possible, and this experimental study is contributed to developing nutrient removal process in low organics as Korea.

Either the pre-treatment and the post-treatment to the common A/O process was carried out for the purpose of performance evaluation. The ammonium ion exchange capacity of the zeolite column for pre-treatment process, was not fully utilized owing to the interference of organic matter and the fouling with suspended solids, The ammonium ion concentration for post-treatment was very low, but the total nitrogen was affected by the retention time of the oxic reactor in A/O process. Because the zeolite column could not remove the nitrate nitrified from the biological treatment process by its property of cation exchanger.

Flow in the combined system is composed mainly of rainfall runoff and wastewater. Flow enters the combined system continuously during both dry and wet weather from th contributing wastewater sources. During a rainfall event, the amount of storm flow is normally much larger than the dry - weather wastewater water flow, and the observed flows during wet weather can mask completely the dry weather flow patterns. The BOD in the stormwater is significantly lower than in he wastewater component. Unlike BOD. SS concentrations highly rise during the storm, and remains unchanged after the storm, indicating that SS concentrations from stormwater runoff and wastewater are similar. The rise in the SS concentration during the peak flow may be due to a phenomenon common to many combined sewer systems known as the "first flush".
