New Records of Creeping Ctenophores, Genus Coeloplana (Tentaculata: Platyctenida: Coeloplanidae), from Korea

2011 Animal Systematics, Evolution and Diversity Vol.27 No.1

Creeping ctenophores, Coeloplana species, were collected by SCUBA divers throughout the year (November 2006 to June 2010) from the branches and polyp masses of encrusting dendronephthyas at a depth of 20-32m off Munseom Island (Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do, Korea). A single individual of a newly recorded species in Korea,Coeloplana bocki Komai, 1920, was collected together with C. anthostella from the same location on 16 August 2009. A large number of individuals of each species were subsequently collected from the host Dendronephthya aff. dendritica on 20 June 2010. C. bocki can be distinguished from C. anthostella Song and Hwang, 2010and C. komaii Utinomi, 1963 by its unique blue and orange colored stripes, and/or the branching and anastomosing milky-white stripes encircling the aboral sense organ towards the margin. The detailed morphology and molecular sequence information (nuclear 18S rDNA, internal transcribed spacer 1, and mitochondrial cox1gene sequences) for C. bocki is provided, and C. bocki and C. anthostella are compared.

A New Species of Genus Coeloplana (Ctenophora: Tentaculata: Platyctenida) from Korea

2010 Animal Systematics, Evolution and Diversity Vol.26 No.3

Since November, 2006, the new creeping platyctenid ctenophore, Coeloplana anthostella n. sp., has been collected from twigs and polyp masses of encrusting dendronephthyans at a depth of 26-32 m off the coast of Munseom, Jejudo Island. This new species is distinguished from C. bocki Komai, 1920 and C. komai Utinomi, 1963 by its smaller size, the absence of dorsal papillae, and the deep scarlet colored star-shaped markings on the dorsal plane. This novel addition to ctenophore fauna is presently described and illustrated in detail.

Vol.36 No.-

To understand the changes of the species composition and the morphology of fouling animals community, a series of studies were carried out at the intake of Wolso˘ng Nuclear Power Plant and So˘ch'o˘n Thermal Power Plant from October, 1984 to June 1985. As a result, 70 species, 43 families, 17 orders, ten classes in eight phyla at Wolso˘ng, and 62 species, 48 families, 20 orders, 14 classes in ten phyla at So˘ch'o˘n were observed during the studv period. Some outstanding group of animals were Wytilus, Balanus and solitary ascidians at Wolso˘ng, and Chlamys, sea anemones, compound ascidians and tubes of amphipods at So˘ch'o˘n. The changes cf species were appeared to be early at Wolso˘ng, eastern coast of Korea. Therefore, it seems the last dominant species of fouling animals is Mytilus edulis.

Vol.13 No.2

For the biosystematic studies on the marine fouling invertebrates in Korea, a faunal and ecological study on macrozoobenthos was carried out at Onsan Bay, where have been affected by the industrial progress due to the economic development. The materials were collected from Onsan Bay and unpolluted area by qualitative and quantitative sampling methods. Macrobenthic animals collected during the study were identified 243 species in total which were consisting of 11 spp. in Hydrozoa. 10 spp. in Anthozoa among Cnidaria, 16 spp. in Polyplacophora. 126 spp. in Gastropoda, 42 spp. in Bivalvia among Mollusca. and 38 spp. in Ascidiacea. And they were 42 spp. from Onsan and 88 spp. from Ulgi in summer season and 106 spp. from Ch`undo and 107 spp. from Tangsa in winter season. The species composition seems to be related to seasonal variation and polluted conditions. Macrobenthic communities indicated that the number of species were more and more depending on unpolluted conditions, and the abundance and the biomass were more and more depending on polluted conditions. The dominant species investigated in these sites according to the importance value (Ⅳ) were as follows: Obelia geniculata, Mytilus edulis, Ostrea circumpicta at Onsan: Botrylloides violaceus, Mytilus edulis, Crassostrea gigas at Ch`undo: Melithaea flabellifera at Ulgi: Symplectoscyphus hozowai at Tangsa. And their vertical distribution and the substrata of each sites were investigated and observed altogether. In order to understand the structure of macrobenthic community, such as ecological indices like species diversity(H), eveness(e) and dominance(C) were measured: H: 1.40-2.21: e: 0.21-0.36: C: 0.44-0.53.

New Records of Cold-Water Corals from Korea

2016 Animal Systematics, Evolution and Diversity Vol.32 No.3

Two cold-water coral taxa, Octocorallia in the class Anthozoa and Stylasteridae in the class Hydrozoa, were identified. Deep-water samples were collected in fishing nets at depths ranging between 20 and 200 m along the coasts of the East Sea in Korea from 1976 to 1993. The two species found in this study represent new records for Korea: Paragorgia arborea (Linnaeus, 1758) in the class Anthozoa, and Stylaster profundiporus Broch, 1936 in the class Hydrozoa. Two families, Paragorgiidae and Stylasteridae, are also newly recorded in Korea. Furthermore, the species name of another cold-water gorgonian species, Primnoa pacifica (Kinoshita, 1907) in the family Primnoidae, is amended in this report. The two newly recorded cold-water coral species from Korea are described in detail based on their morphological characteristics. Paragorgia arborea is characterized by its growth form, medulla and cortex, zooid dimorphism, canal system, and spicule composition. Stylaster profundiporus is distinguished by its external skeletal characteristics, such as the coordination of dactylopores and gastropores, presence or absence of gastrostyles and dactylostyles, cyclosystem orientation, ampullar position, gastropore tube shape, and coenosteal texture.

      • Taxonomy of Cerianthus filiformis (Ceriantharia, Anthozoa) and Its Phoronid Associate, Phoronis australis in Korea

Song, Jun-Im The Korean Society for Integrative Biology 1998 Korean journal of biological sciences Vol.2 No.2

The tube anemone, Cerianthus filiformis Carlgren, was collected from nine localities in the Yellow Sea and the Korea Strait (the South Sea). Populations at different localities showed color variations in tentacles from pale brown to violet. This species is redescribed here because it shows the color variation and the association with the phoronid, Phoronis australis, which was newly recorded from Korean waters. The phoronid has black to purple tentacles shaded with the same color as the cerianthid's tube for mimicking.

      • A Systematic Study on the Korean Anthozoa 11. Cnidae of Scleractinia

Song, Jun-Im The Korean Society of Systematic Zoology 1988 Korean Journal of Systematic Zoology Special Issue Vol.2 No.-

The Korean scleractinians examined in the present study are seven species in five families . They have six kinds of cnidae ; atrichous isorhizas, basitrichous isorhizas, holotrichous isorhizas, microbasis p-mastigophores, microbasic b-mastigophores and spirocysts, of which the holotrichous isorhizas, microbasic p-mastigophores and spirocysts are distributed in all species. The atrichous and basitrichous isorhizas are present very rare in Korean scleractinians. Especially the microbasic p-mastigophores are common in most parts of all species.
