        Manipulating Gender: The Flexibility of Skin in Angela Carter’s The Passion of New Eve

        This paper examines the image of the body in Angela Carter’s 1997 novel The Passion of New Eve. This paper argues that Carter rejects essentialist concepts of femininity that view gender as something innate within individuals and only somewhat conditioned by either biology or upbringing. In her novel, Carter problematizes the universal biological categories of women and men by representing a collision between human skin and self. This paper suggests that Carter regards human skin as a flexible material that can be modified depending on one’s view toward skin. By combining the postmodern deconstruction of identity with the flexibility of skin, Carter deconstructs the assumed fixedness of gender identity. Moreover, she emphasizes that the primary source of situating gender difference is not biological difference, but cultural production. (Texas A&M University)

        영어 글쓰기 지도 수업에서의 동료 첨삭의 효과: 영어교육학과 대학원생들을 중심으로

        This study aimed to examine the effects of using peer feedback in writing instruction course offered to 18 graduate students of English education. Writing theory, peer feedback training, editing practice were integral parts of the course. The participants were trained to generate peer feedback with an essay grading rubric and a sheet for revision tips. The data was gathered via two surveys and semi-structured interviews to investigate the participants` perceptions regarding the usefulness of peer feedback and their confidence in self- and peer-editing. Results showed that peer reviews helped them to foster their awareness of audience and recognize their own egocentric point of view in essay writing. They indicated that peer feedback training and peer review activities increased their confidence in providing written feedback on peer writing as well as improving the quality of their writing. Based on the findings, some meaningful pedagogical implications were provided for educators working in higher education while encouraging them to use peer feedback in writing classes.         NES and NNES Students’ Apology Strategies in E-mail

        This study investigated apologetic e-mails written by 56 native English speaking (NES) and 54 non-native English speaking (NNES) students sent to professors in an American university. Two hundred six e-mails were analyzed to examine their apology strategies and opening and closing moves in e-mail writing. Results indicated that NNES students were more likely to add a detailed explanation regarding the cause of an offense than NES students. The most common apology strategy preferred by both groups was the use of EXPL+IFID formula. Group differences in framing opening and closing moves reflected perceptual differences regarding the social status between students and professors. NES students tended to focus on delivering their communicative goals, whereas NNES students tended to express their deference toward professors by opening and closing moves more formally. Pedagogical implications were made for EFL learners to write better e-mail for successful cross-cultural communication. (SungKyunKwan University)

        『우돌포 성의 비밀』에 나타난 이중적 글쓰기: 초자연적 기법과 결혼관

        Ann Radcliffe is called “a queen of Gothic novel writer”. Her novels were very popular her time at the near countries such as England, Italy, France and America. The reason why her novels was popular because she developed Gothic novel’s technique such as supernatural power, veiled pictures, technique of suspense, untold story and mysterious events. She is considered as a conservative writer by those techniques. Some critics call her as a conservative writer, but I agree that she is also a progressive writer. By using dualistic writing techniques, she is trying to avoid being criticized by conservative critics, who criticize women’s writing. It was a writing strategy to survive among the conservative male writers. This paper analyzes what kind of effects her dualistic writing techniques have and succeed by studying on supernatural gothic technique and a view of marriage. (Sung Kyun Kwan University)

        뮤리엘 스파크의 『진 브로디 선생의 전성기』에 나타난 충성심의 의미

        Muriel Spark (1918-2006) was a Scottish novelist. She was listed as one of the 50 greatest British writers since 1945 by The Times in 2008. This paper examines Spark’s The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1961). Jean Brodie was a charismatic and autocratic teacher of six students called the ‘Brodie set.’ Unlike previous critics who had paid attention to Spark’s experimental writing techniques such as multiple narrators, narrative structure, and the elements of metafiction or satire, the paper analyzes the meaning of loyalty by focusing on Sandy Stranger. Ms. Brodie trusted Sandy more than any of her students in the group. However, Sandy was the one who contributed to causing Ms. Brodie’s forced retirement. First, this paper examines Mary’s role in the group and then addresses Brodies’ influence on Joyce, an outsider of the group. Second, it deals with the meaning of loyalty and betrayal based on Sandy’s arguments. Last, it discusses the meaning of Sandy’s conversion to Roman Catholicism and that of her living as a nun. Through the distorted relationships between Ms. Brodie and her students, Spark warns readers about the dangers of following a leader who lacks a sense of sin and guilt in manipulating others’ behaviors to pursue his or her own self-interest.         한국인 교수자의 영어매개강의에 대한 국내 대학생과 외국인 유학생의 인식과 선호도 연구

        This study investigated university students’ perceptions and preferences on English Medium Instruction (EMI) taught by Korean instructors. The data for this study was collected through paper surveys from 105 Korean and 81 international students. Results showed that there were no significant differences between groups in perceiving the effectiveness of EMI and the necessity of improving EMI courses with regards to teacher quality, teaching methods, and student learning assessment practices. Nonetheless, there was a significant difference between groups regarding class activities. International students preferred to work in groups on presentations, assignments and discussions. Participants in both groups opposed the idea of expanding EMI to general and major elective courses, and increasing mandatory credits for EMI courses. They preferred student-centered learning over teacher-centered instruction. Overall, the international students expressed greater dissatisfaction with EMI classes than the Korean students did. The international students exhibited more stress from having to master Korean as well as English for learning course material. Based on this study’s results, implications and recommendations for researchers and educators are discussed to improve the quality of EMI courses at Korean universities.
